Holy shit, no! Alfredo! My mind is blown right now, it always astounds me the insane amount of little details put into this anime.

Also, everyone I thought of was taken so I'll put in a black VA in there.

Guy has such a cool voice, and plays some amazing characters, both black and not. I wish he appeared more, but oh well.

But I made no mention of his hairstyle, I'm referring to the look of his hair, it resembles that of a black person. The last thing I thought of was his hairstyle.

hair = hairstyle.

As it is the appearance of said characters hair which made you make the statement. Its pretty much the same thing, since you are making the assumption that the way someone's hair looks suddenly decides their ethnicity. Which while we do not have a specific for what the OP is saying with "Black Characters" you still are throwing said character under that classification partially based on their physical appearance. Which apparently is what folks are unhappy with at the same time too in the examples shown here and spoken of with Akira Toriyama's early character designs with people who are to be considered "black".

And pretty much why I called you out on your post in the first place as it falls into the same category of placing a character into a particular group just based off of outside appearances / preconceived ideals of what said classification of a group should look like.

More pics off the actor Kuzan was supposedly based off of.

Since when does hair=hairstyle?
I was comparing the character's appearance with that of myself, with whom I to share what appears to look like Afro-textured hair, (not hairstyle) and dark skin color.

How so?

Also REALLY surprised no one mentioned Afro Samurai. I mean, really.

Probably because everyone else read the OP.

Some "moe" thread got me thinking about anime. I did a quick search and did not find a thread on this but I was wondering, with black characters so few and far between in anime, who are the best, most interesting black anime characters?

I want to go ahead and eliminate American-syndicated series like Afro Samurai or anime-ized American comics Blade and X-Men.

Please don't assume we know the reference point and post the name of the anime that featured the character as well.

I've just started watching Michiko to Hatchin and holy shit is Michiko Malandro such a sexy badass. She's has big violent tendencies but always cherishes the people than mean dear to her. I'm hoping she and hatchin reunites with their lover/dad (I hate sad endings). I'm still on episode 11 but ill keep watching!

re-read the OP
I just did (this is also maybe the 3rd time I've done that this week. I'm slippin') :p

Thing is, I don't get why you'd ignore them. I mean, we're dealing with black characters in anime here, that's already a kind of limited field.

Don't see why the need to make it even more limited right off the bat :\

OTOH, props to anyone who mentioned afro dude from Votoms or the girl from Burn-Up W. I'd die for a remaster or remake of Votoms, great cult classic series there. I'm almost tempted to list

but I thought she was more dark-skinned Middle Eastern, like maybe from Yemen or something. Most of the show's cast is based on European and Middle Eastern countries anyway.

But I mean, if this is more about skin tone than ethnic group, she counts.

Really was a great unique series thats for sure.

Was gonna post this. Wonderful character, but the author has this really weird positive discrimination thing going on with black people and (to a lesser extent) Americans in general.

Still. Panther is legit.

Patrick "Panther" Spencer was indeed a good character. Loved his grandmother, loyal to his friends, had the resolve to put up with all the stupid bullshit and pull through to become what he wanted to.

The thing is though the backstory shows Panthers teammates stand up for him and all the bullshit the coach put him through and eventually the coach changes his ways too. It was really well done arc when they went through his backstory.

Yup. His interactions with the rest of his team were the big selling point, that and when he almost snapped and hit Apollo on the bus. You really felt for the guy.

I thought it was interesting that they showed where Apollos racism was coming from too as usually those types of characters they are just painted as hey this is the bad racist guy you hate. Which made his turning point pretty big too I thought.

Man, another "black" anime character thread where half the characters are ambiguously brown or from other races. I gaf would be more savy that this :(

Ep11_hououmaru.jpg

Hououmaru from Kill la Kill (she's from an unnamed African country and it's not her real name)

I had a conversation about Yoruichi's ethnicity/race with a friend once, I was saying I thought she was mixed while he believed she was just a tanned white person (his reasoning was that she didn't have "big lips" or a "big nose"). The fact that she has an afro and some type of Diana Ross swag in one of the anime endings makes me think the author intended her to be black/mixed. I don't read Bleach though, just know who the character is.

She always struck me as Indian considering how stereotypical his non-Asian/mixed characters look, especially now that we've seen
her brother.

Punch/Alfredo from Cowboy Bebop

One-half of the bounty hunter program Big Shot, both he and Judy mainly serve as comic relief, but he's pretty charming. His last appearance as that persona is in "Brain Scratch" where he reveals the cancellation of the show.

In a rather surprising cameo, he appears one last time, but as Alfredo. Faye spots him at an airport picking up his mother in episode 25 "The Real Folk Blues Part One". I always really loved that cameo. It also really drives home the fact that you're at the end of Bebop.

Agh! Of course. How could I have forgotten him? I love Punch (and Judy).

I had heard of Black Lagoon before, but never watched it. This thread convinced me to watch it. Damn, it's good. Luckily Hulu got all of the episodes dubbed for free. :D

Many of the characters posted aren't black.. they're tanned/dark-skinned..

Well see now the questionable thing with saying that is...what qualifies as "black"? Something that you'd consider a typical "black" feature in fact probably isn't present on a good deal of "black" people. So basically you'd be slipping into some some potentially stereotyping territory there.

Other thing is what the OP really means. Logically most are going to deduce that to mean black people in an ethnic sense, but maybe they really do only mean in terms of skin tone, regardless of ethnicity. Which certainly opens up a bigger selection.

And let's be honest for a second; darker-skinned characters are so rare in anime as-is already, it seems a bit silly to further limit it (like what the OP did. Why can't I list Afro Samurai, exactly?).

Not to mention, it kind of pushes the thought of there being darker-skinned Asians and Latinos to the back-burner, when in fact there are some who are darker skinned than a lot of Black people :/

This is from the older series and more closely resembles the original 1960's manga's designs by Shotaro Ishinomori.

The one on the last page is from the 2012 film 009 Re:Cyborg

To be fair, his 2001 redesign is a HUGE improvement over what he'd originally looked like back in the manga.

Most people try to project (I think this is the right term?) what they want a character to be, so I guess it makes sense for black people to assume that most dark skinned characters in anime are black.

And his wife were in the Air Gear manga. Not the actual names of course. The wife didnt really look like her either, but Obama was most def there. Forget which book it was though, its in the other room, but its not important enough of an issue to go warrant looking up lol.

It also makes a weird asumption that black people have to be literally black to be considered black, there are god knows how many black people, including me most times(altho ive been described by a old teacher to be caramal) that would be more brown than black

It might be amazing now but in the 1st and 2nd season Aomine moves look like complete shit. Buzzer Beater basketball animations was way better.

Animation probably not as good when I first watched it but the basketball moves looks so satisfying. I just think Eye Shield 21 and Prince of Tennis did a better job at fantasy sports.

Obama was in Baki manga and he was scared of Yujiro. lol

haha pretty awesome. never read the baki mangas so was not familiar with this. I cant remember which other manga he was in that I have over here, but his face has appeared in a lot of stuff since he was fairly popular of a character in Japan esp that slogan of his "Yes We Can". Though there are more other variations and such. Though could just be more that people associated that with Avadol from Jojos "Yes I am" phrase lol

Ah found it.

I present to you "John Omaha"

Shout outs to all the dudes who said Me & The Devil Blues came back, I never would have dreamed it. Now only if Blaster Knuckle had a chance.
