Oy, looks like they did ask Greg about it!

ARROW / THE FLASH PRODUCER TALKS SUPERGIRL CASTING AND THE BIG CROSSOVER QUESTION - Greg Berlanti gives an update on Kara's progress.

Question: Anything you can say about Supergirl and what the tone of that show is and also if we’re going to hear about casting soon?

Greg Berlanti: I hope you’re going to hear about casting soon or we’re not going to be able to make the pilot! I would say, tonally closer to Flash than Arrow. That’s probably the best way to say it.

Question: Do you mean it'll be more romantic?

Berlanti: Well the nature of the character is a bit, and who we have in her life and who we’re surrounding her with. Also, tonally, I thought of those kind of characters as [strongly] DC Universe and I’m sure Geoff [Johns] would agree. And they both died in Crisis of Infinite Earths! So they’re similar.

Question: Is there crossover potential for Supergirl with Arrow or The Flash?

Berlanti: So much has to go right for us to be able to make a great show. Again, I think of myself as like if I were watching them, I would want to see that. But we have to get so many things right to make a good show and so much of it is luck, unfortunately.

Question: People have been clamoring to see a female superhero have her own project. Can you talk about how you’re approaching the idea of a female in the superhero world?

Berlanti: That was really important to all of us when we set out on working on it and it was really important to DC and it was really important to the women I’m working on the show with and the women that work in the studio and the women that work at the network. In a lot of ways, I’m surrounded by more women on the project that could answer that question better.

Question: Are you looking at things like what didn’t work in the Wonder Woman pilot?

Berlanti: I think it’s more, for us, always more learning from our own mistakes and our own successes. So a show like Arrow and Flash, without stuff I learned on Eli Stone and No Ordinary Family probably wouldn’t exist in terms of visual effects or stunts or things like that. And storywise, what we learn on these shows, a thing that we always learn is just how important casting is. If you’re right on the money and you have the kind of actors we have on these shows, it just makes you look so much better.

Question: How’s the casting process coming? What are the challenges?

Berlanti: As with all these things, there’s only one person, right? That’s the thing. I can’t imagine someone other than a lot of our actors playing these roles so I feel like you’re always just looking for who’s that person.

I hope they do the training scene with Kara.

Ollie: We're here to train.
Kara: This is a waste of time. There's nothing you can teach me.
Barry: I wouldn't be so sure.

Ollie: Here's the exercise. I'm going to shoot you with an arrow.
Kara: Yeah okay.

*Ollie shoots Kara, who heat visions the arrow to dust*

Kara: See? Waste of time.
Barry: Wait for it...

LOL. something like this would great. Yeah :D

How does one do a Supergirl series without Superman somewhere in the background? Maybe make it the premise, like Superman has gone missing and Supergirl has to pick up the slack? Might make for a lot of good drama. Lois Lane being harder on her because she's not as good as Superman, etc.

EW: CBS reveals ‘Supergirl’ details: The costume is ‘awesome’

First, since Supergirl is on CBS, you can definitely expect the show to be a crime procedural. Yet Tassler emphasized the show will have serialized elements as well. “There will be [crime] cases, but what [executive producers] Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti pitched was a real series arc for her,” she said. “The beauty of it is now with shows like Good Wife and Madam Secretary, you can have serialized story elements woven into a case of the week. She’s a crime solver, so she’s going to have to solve a crime. She’s going to get a bad guy.”

Tassler described the CBS version of the DC Comics icon as “a very strong, independent young woman. She’s coming into her own. She’s dealing with family issues. She’s dealing with work issues. It’s a female empowerment story. If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that … We’re big feminists. It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements. It’s not just her strength, which she does have.”

CBS has been searching for the perfect actress for several weeks and sources say the network is leaning toward a lesser-known performer for the role. Tassler emphasized the actress has to carry the series. “She’s got to be an every woman,” she said. “She’s got to be specific. She’s got to be a terrific actor. I think back to having had the good fortune of being at Warner Bros. when we were doing Lois & Clark, the chemistry between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher was really wonderful. So I think in this case, it’s looking for someone who embodies both the freshness and the exuberance of being a young woman in today’s challenging climate and being someone who can carry this kind of series on her shoulders. It’s a big, big show.”

Though there’s no actress announced yet, CBS has a costume design ready to go — one that Tassler was most definitely excited about. “We have seen the costume,” she said. “Awesome costume.” Tassler added that the costume was being made by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who also did the costumes for Arrow and The Flash.

And speaking of which, reporters also wanted to know what made the young-ish super-powered character a good fit for CBS — especially when sister-network The CW has made youthful DC heroes a major part of its brand. “I think we’re watching an evolution with regard to the way that superhero characters are portrayed,” Tassler said. “There’s a humanity. They’re flawed. There’s a relatability. For our network right now, what we did respond to was the character’s humanity, the other characters in the show as well — the story trajectory and the character’s arc and growth. These are all things that made her just imminently relatable, and made the story exciting. We made a decision based on the pitch that we heard.”

Earlier during the press tour, The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz was asked if he was dismayed that CBS landed the big title instead of his own network. Not surprisingly, the executive said he was fine with it. “I’m happy for [Warner Bros.] that they were able to sell it to CBS. We were aware of it. We knew about it … You don’t want to become just one thing to everybody. So it’s good to have some diversity, and I’m very happy that they sold it to another network.”

Pedowitz added that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a crossover between his DC titles like Arrow and The Flash.

This pleases me greatly. I just hope they don't end up throwing it all away by having her fawn over someone she can't have or some contrived BS.

Oh...

Maybe I spoke too soon. Interesting casting info though, leaves it open for pretty much anyone.

Why not just debut the suit now? Give us something, even if it's just a drawing of what it looks like.

The suit should look similar to the mos one. Full body suit, just add the new 52 cape, and use different materials or a lighter colour to make sure no one thinks this is connected to the movies. Definitely no skirt.

CBS network head would have more authority to veto the crossover I would think. This casts even more doubt on a Teen Titans crossover since the Showrunner is different in addition to being on a different network as well. ;/

Lobo sucks, though.

no u.

I take this to mean that they want to establish the character and the show itself before they start crossing over.

Its fine if they are seperate shows, they need to give Kara time to develop in her world. Although Berlanti did say a crossover can happen so don't count it out yet. After all he made sure to include it in the contract.

And reading GAF only, I were of the impression Supergirl were gonna cross over for sure. Everyone just seemed so sure.

I'm still excited for the show though.

They should just do like they did with Flash. Introduce her on one of those shows (preferably Flash but either is fine) and use that to draw viewers to CBS. Then when the timing is right do a crossover episode. Like in a theoretical Season 2 if Supergirl gets that far.

A number of us were specifically pointing out that, where crossovers are concerned, Berlanti running Supergirl made the chances higher (specifically compared to Teen Titans)... but I don't think anyone was actually certain about it. Even if CBS is partnered with Warner on CW.. they are technically competing networks.

Details sound good so far. I'm pretty confident they'll nail the costume and actor after how great Arrow and Flash turned out.

As long as it's for sure the same universe, I can wait for a cross over.

They haven't even confirmed that, have they? Are they allowed to drop easter eggs and hints that they're in the same universe or is it one of those things where they can't mention the other show because they're on a different network?

Probably waiting to have someone to wear it first. Sorta surprised a casting announcement isn't going to be made today, honestly.

That's probably it. Still, a sneak peek would have been nice.

And so am I. Thought for sure we'd get a casting announcement along with a tentative air date. Ah well, I'm sure we'll get one soon.

It's probably fairly open, but what's the rough cut off point for them to get a lead/additional cast and still be able to air this year?
