Melee is one of the purest competitive fighting games ever made and there's nothing else out there like it.

*shrug*

Game would probably be bigger of it weren't for its sequels.

I can even see Melee being bigger than Marvel this year, honestly.

I think that's going to be a given. And who knows, Smash 4 might overtake Marvel as well. But the idea of having Smash 4 and Melee back to back....well I guess you should either not look at the stream chat or relish in their pain lol.

Saw this cool flyer on Twitter

This is beautiful.

Also, Mr. Wizard is asking people on Twitter what games they want to see at Evo. I just remembered... MK9 and Injustice were both at Evo 2013. So fuck it, with Nintendo's support, I don't see why they can't put both Smash 4 and Melee on the roster. They would be the third and fourth biggest games at the tournament, free. With Melee's current momentum (Apex is the biggest Melee tournament ever WTF), I can even see Melee being bigger than Marvel this year, honestly.

I tweeted to show support. I know people want Smash 4 to take the stage, but I just like Melee way too much.

Smash being bigger than Marvel is a given at this point. New game hype is going to carry the momentum all the way to EVO.

USF4
UMVC3
Smash 4
Melee
GGXrd
KI S2
MKX

These games are most likely. No 3D fighter this year.

The love for the game is strong, it's great.
I've been part of several niche communities that have been very passionate (and crazy); it's definitely part of it but that can't just be it. I think the documentary and initial Evo donation drive did help (as MajinSweet4 mentioned), but... well, it's all just weird.

If you're purely going by numbers, SSB4 would be the game at risk being cut, not SSBM. Not to say that would happen, especially with decent numbers so far and Nintendo cutting checks. I really think if SSBM is at Evo this year, it'll outdraw UMvC3 (which has fallen below the MendozaAnime line at the last couple of majors -- it may not even outdraw Xrd at this rate).

I could actually see Evo going down to 7 games this year. I expect USF4 to have a stupidly high turn-out with 2,000+ players (if the bonus from Capcom goes up at the same rate the main CPT payouts did, Evo is going to have what, a $100k pot? Crazy.) and SSBM/SSBM is also going to have a ton of players, which means they're going to be more pressed for space. Furthermore, adding an eighth spot gets kind of awkward... who do you give it to? Do you retread TTT2 for another year? What about P4AU or UNIEL, with most of their players having moved over to (or at least distracted by) Xrd? Injustice? There's no easy pick, unless you want to go nuts and expand the line-up to 10+ games (which I think would be amazing, but I can't see it being possible logistically).

No 3D fighter this year though. TTT2 barely got in last year. Not enough entrances for it.

Would be a surprise twist to see DOA5 Final Round in there.

We can just have Aris tell some stories in place of hosting a 3D fighter. Fuck it I'd watch that.

if Melee does make it in (not convinced as long as Mr. Wizard is involved), it should easily beat Marvel, which is continuing to decline (Smash 4 might even beat it too, imagine seeing Marvel at 4th in entrants :lol)

Markman would probably take care of TTT2 if it didn't make it in this year.

It got really low numbers last year too so I don't think you can really justify the slot aside from arguing you need a 3D fighter in the mix.

USF4
UMVC3
Melee
Smash 4
P4U2
Xrd
MKX

That would be my list. KI would be next if we got another spot. In reality, if we got two anime games, BBCPEX is gonna take the spot though but I'd prefer P4U2.

TTT 2 was fantastic at EVO last year, wouldn't even be mad if it didn't make it this year. Or surprised. I just hope MKX ends up being awesome.

Evo would need a really good excuse to not run both SSB4 and SSBM imo.

"logistical nightmare" (even though the community provided everything at Evo 2014), "most of them will play SSB4 anyway" (despite Apex 2015 having ~25% crossover between the two using the lower SSB4 totals as a base, using Melee's total it's less than 20%)

we're talking about the guy that ran an items ruleset for Brawl at Evo 2008 despite widespread community resistance

edit: meanwhile Smash 4's total places it as the 3rd largest tournament for any Smash game, behind Apex 2015 and Evo 2014 for Melee, this is as high as it goes though unless there's some ridiculous explosion at the end

Are the Smash guys illuminati enough yet to pay the requisite marketing cash to get into EVO? Doubtful

I didn't even realize how ridiculous this acronym was until now; I hope a 2.0 version comes out.
BBCPEX is the 2.0 version, and it's pretty much universally considered to be worse than 1.1. Good job, good effort ArcSys.

Uh... they already did? Did you miss the donation drive from Evo 2013?

I'm totally down to drop a hot vote on double Smash if it comes to it.

Edit: Shouta's list is great.

I don't think EVO needs two Smash games. Melee had its time, but a worthy successor has arrived. Let's get rid of four-stock matches while we're at it. Here's what should be at EVO:

USFIV
UMVC3
Smash 4
GG Xrd
MKX
Injustice

Vote on a seventh game. If Melee wins that so be it.

I would enjoy a 3D fighter but TTT2 is out of steam, DOA5 isn't very well liked at all, VF5FS players don't exist outside of a handful of us, and SC5 is an illusion. =(

Leffen's got that anime hair Kappa

One of the coolest things about the art is how it manages to be stylized yet wholly represent the players being done. On another note, I'd watch the fuck out of a PPMD Falco show based on that art posted on the previous page. :lol

Melee has to be in. With the large numbers its getting in tournaments still it would be messed up not to have it.

The choice is obvious here. Girl Fight!

Smash 4 has to be a lock since it's fairly safe to assume Nintendo will still be involved and they will of course want their new game there. I could see Melee potentially not making it as a combination of Nintendo wanting their new game only + CRT/logistical nightmare (if you'll remember last year a ton of people said they were going to bring CRTs and didn't, and they were mad scrambling to still get TVs the first morning of EVO). Outside of that unlikely combination scenario though I think both Melee and Smash 4 will probably make it.

Dahbomb's list is pretty spot on IMO, and I agree with Shouta that the only conceivable argument you could make for Tekken is if you want to make the argument that there HAS to be a 3D fighter, but that's it.

Lol, why is Injustice on your list?

I think the Evo list should reflect what is hot with competition. What are people playing and burning their time on? Melee is undoubtedly such a game, which is why it shouldn't be discounted. Smash 4 gets in on "New game" status and the auto-interest that comes with that, but I wouldn't doubt seeing Melee outlive it. The high school kids where I work still play Melee during lunch.

Doesn't MS pay for KI to be in?

Is P4U2 still widely played?

Ideally, Mr. Wizard finds a way to include another game. While 3D fighters haven't had a release that picked up steam in a while, I would still like to see one present just for the sake of that community. Evo would be best if it could at least celebrate one game from each kind of lineage.

I like how he has the glock pointing out

P4U2 would get Japanese players to come as they've already said they'd attend if it made it in.

Dunno about KI.

Bolded: That was EVO 2013, not 2014. 2014 the Smash community had a Smash Vault of CRTs and some Gamecubes + copies of Melee which CrimsonBlur lugged over 40+ CRTs to EVO. The EVO staff did *nothing* to contribute to the setups. The only thing they were scrambling for in 2014 were copies of Melee and a few more Gamecubes.

CrimsonBlur still has the Smash Vault afaik as well so it actually wouldn't be a logistical nightmare -- Mr. Wizard was exaggerating it completely. Outside of having to scramble for Cubes/Melee they had all the CRTs they could have ever needed.
