Bolded: That was EVO 2013, not 2014. 2014 the Smash community had a Smash Vault of CRTs and some Gamecubes + copies of Melee which CrimsonBlur lugged over 40+ CRTs to EVO. The EVO staff did *nothing* to contribute to the setups. The only thing they were scrambling for in 2014 were copies of Melee and a few more Gamecubes.

CrimsonBlur still has the Smash Vault afaik as well so it actually wouldn't be a logistical nightmare -- Mr. Wizard was exaggerating it completely. Outside of having to scramble for Cubes/Melee they had all the CRTs they could have ever needed.

How in the world do you transport 40+ CRTs?

I think it's very likely Namco will bring a couple Tekken 7 cabinets for EVO and there will probably be a T7 side tournament for everyone that goes to EVO to enter. Might even get streamed but there would be no point since there'd be VASTLY superior Korean and Japanese videos on the web.

It's more interesting than Melee.

Damn shame if theres no 3D fighters at all this year. I love VF and Tekken...the games have so much depth and life in them, I wish more people liked what I like.

Is there any precedent for what the SSBM community has been doing over the last several years? It's crazy that a game nearly 15 years old is managing to continue to grow it's competitive playerbase without any real support from its publisher/developer (until now, and even then). The closest games I can think of is something like Dota or Counter-Strike, and those were from very different situations. Crazy.
One real thing that happens is that w/ enfranchised gamers- they get older, get jobs, and have money to re-invest. I think we're seeing that w/ the Melee community to a degree, similar to what we've seen in MTG w/ Legacy, which is old and expensive but still draws large crowds.

They have the reputation of being hard as balls and not the sf legacy. That and well especially in Tekken's example not quite the most open community to get into.

Everything gets much easier when you just choose to like Street Fighter.

Except online play

That's not gonna help Tekken this year....

Oh snaps.

What's wrong with Tekken community?

It's more interesting than Melee.

...............

I would enjoy a 3D fighter but TTT2 is out of steam, DOA5 isn't very well liked at all, VF5FS players don't exist outside of a handful of us, and SC5 is an illusion. =(

It's sad because TTT2 still has so much potential.

And you tried to make fun of me for not liking the Beatles. Glass houses, sir.

Touché.

By the way, have we even played Smash 4 together yet?

Nope, we only tried that one time. Of course now the WiiU edition is out and I still don't have a WiiU (hopefully this year). I haven't really been playing the 3DS version anyway, though I will come back to it.

I think they are so entrenched in their world that it's hard to see somebody form the outside and help them in. Well in my view anyway.

New people are coming into TTT2 OT all the time on this forum and from what I've aware, nobody's been rejected help when they've asked.

Even from my own experience at the single tournament I went to, Tekken players are quite nice. I didn't bring my USB charger with the dualshock on the first tournament day and had three different Tekken players that willingly gave theirs up so I could connect my controller and play. None of them knew me.

Plus, if you see the efforts people from the community put into tutorials, I don't think anyone wants to willingly turn away new comers to the Tekken scene.

But maybe I'm biased in my observations and you've noticed something I haven't.

2 smash games is too much for evo. nintendo is going to be involved so you know what it is
2 smash games is fine. Evo isn't likely going to suffer a drop in viewers since the smash games will get a bunch of casuals to watch. If Nintendo gets involved then evo will get more attention from gaming sites which will bring more viewers.

Real Talk, I feel like Twitch is giving more to SmashGC than Nintendo.

Twitch been fully supporting, featuring and hiring everything Smash for so long and dropping the Pot Bonus bomb on Apex is great too.
Nintendo first and foremost is pushing SM4SH not Smash, and while their name along gives big sway, the awesome guys like Bill Trinen and the clubhouse are far away from Japanese CEO Nintendo who actually make the decisions and put down the word and wallet.

I really hope they prove me wrong on things like Apex and Evo but the hands off mentality for all things not SM4SH isn't really doing anything for me.

Max's fighting game skill won't decide how much he takes home every tournament, its instead how entertaining and most importantly, how consistent he creates new content. His career is a content creator; whether it about about Benny or Hype trailer or Game/Character breakdowns or Epic Boss Battles (probably the only content my wife will watch with me besides Benny) or Lets play type content. He is entertainment/reason to watch something vs the actual game played.

When I talk about a career in fighting games is generating income based on tournament winnings and sponsors. Skill in fighting games will only carry you so far and you are at the mercy of the actual popularity of the game vs your own popularity. ChrisG, an incredible talent doesn't have the draw outside of the game like a Yipes does.

So I guess its tournament winnings vs youtube/twitch subscription money.

Its alright to dream, but its also good to get a dose of reality of people's Hoop Dreams.

The main difference is reliability. And that's even accounting for the fact that the youtube gig is fairly shaky. No matter how good of a fighting game player you are, you rely on a sponsorship for your income. Even the absolute best can't rely on winning big tournaments consistently. And unless your a name like Daigo or Justin, you can't assume that a sponsorship is going to last. A youtuber at the very least can take steps to try and ensure viewership and thus, a consistent income. While Infiltration currently doesn't have a sponsor despite having some crazily impressive accomplishments.

I don't think you guys want to admit that Max's current status the exception, not the rule. Much like a Daigo or a Spooky.

Are you going to tell me that living a KaneBlueRiver-esque lifestyle is fine as long as you have a youtube channel?

The funny thing is the other day I saw Bill Trinen tweeting about BEAST V Melee Top 8. Dude was watching it and rooting for Mang0. Of course it doesn't mean much business-wise but it was nice to see for a change.

SCV isn't an illusion, yet. KiT had some great matches, and NEC had USA, Canada, France, and Japan all representing which hasn't happened since EVO 2012. France is having a tournament this weekend and Japan is having their big online tournament in the beginning of February, but the reality is that 2D games, primarily Street Fighter get the most attention.

EVO is looking for games that are popular or new, so the lineup will probably be:

USF4
Mahvel
Xrd
MKX
Smash 4

I wouldn't mind seeing Melee back since I'm not the one running it, but that would depend on whether EVO wants to deal with the logistics of acquiring old consoles and hauling bulky CRTs. We already know the attendance would be there, and personally I rather see Melee over Smash 4 because Melee looks more exciting competitively and has more hype going for it. Just look at what's been going on not just at Apex, but worldwide for Melee.

You could add P4U2, but that game hasn't had any buzz since its release, and we all know Japan is just going to mop up anyway. At least BBCP was interesting to watch and had some hype to it, which is now gone in the 2.0 update.

I wouldn't mind seeing TTT2 either, but the attendance isn't there and Korea is just going to mop up anyway, and who knows how much interest will be left in that game once Tekken 7 drops next month. Most likely this Final Round in March will be its farewell.

DOA is even more of a longshot of getting in since it doesn't have much of an offline scene in the states. Same as VF.

Bill and the Clubhouse are great, interacting with them at some of the tradeshows and how they handled the Mini-tournament where they let MIOM crew host was great, I just wish it reflected/had more sway.

This. While performing at the highest level in tournaments to ensure a continuing stream of winnings and keeping your sponsorship safe is incredibly difficult, and Max's income from his channel is probably relatively stable/reliable, Max is literally the ONLY dude who is making legit money doing what he does on youtube (in the fighting game genre), AFAIK.

I am glad we can all agree finally that one should not look into having a career in fighting games.

I think that speaks about the people in the FGC more than it does Max. Plenty of people have had decent success with Twitch or Youtube but don't stick with it.

My entire point being, is that anyone in that position, successful pro player or youtuber, fell into that line of work as a biproduct of what they were doing in their free time.

I don't think anyone looks on craig's list to become a top fighting game player.

Wait they don't?

too bad Bill Trinen isn't in charge of NoA, we'd be esports already :P

Two Smash games at EVO is fine and how it should be(considering both can bring the numbers), only one of them should end on Sunday though.

both on sunday. anybody that doesn't like it can watch something else. if evo wants to present itself as the super bowl of the fgc then it should properly showcase the community's biggest games. sunday is the biggest day so both games deserve to be there if they get the numbers.
