Windows 10: The Next Chapter - Media Briefing Details (Phil Spencer speaking)

If they are going the united platform route, the best thing they could do would be to support streaming across the entirety of Windows 10. Assuming its on everything, it should allow for back and forth streaming between PC Xbox and phones

Honestly, if MS creates or re-works their own Xbox client for Windows to offer cross-buy with the Xbox one, I'd be seriously tempted to leave Sony and go PC/Xbox.

Hopefully this means the Windows Store can now compete with the Mac App Store.

I was browsing the app store on my friends MacBook Pro (13in late 2013 ;p) and WOW there is a lot of good games on their store like Tomb Raider 2013, Worms, Civ 5 and even Sonic and All-Stars Tennis which is exclusive to Macintosh, well, besides the console versions, with Gamecenter support. (Xbox Live clone?)

The Windows Store currently has barely any AAA games or indie games other than Mobile games compared to the Mac App Store. It's quite a contrast.

I heard the Windows Store will now accept native desktop programs so hopefully Windows will grow into a healthy app store like Apples. The Xbox integration in Windows 8 apps is pretty good, it's behaves just like an Xbox console with cloud saves and a lot more simplified and trouble free than GFWL.

The only game currently using a modified version of XFW (Xbox for Windows, different from GFWL) is Happy Wars on Steam. I'm guessing if Microsoft continues publishing on Steam, they will be using XFW with their games.

my guess is that the windows app store in windows 10 will allow full desktop apps and games. so we will see games like witcher 3 listed, perhaps even with steam + xbox achievement and stuff.

A lot of Desktop games are listed in the Windows Store but the links provided either send you to the Publishers website or Steam lol.

Its never too late to join hop on the train! Going to stop posting updates for tonight soon though. So if you want to jump on just keep posting and I will add you to the train.

I'm in. I'm really interested in this since I'm a PC gamer and used to be a big fan of Xbox. This could be some megaton-level announcement. I'm on board!

yeah, but imagine installing them straight from the store. there were rumors around that some months ago.

Can't wait to see GAF initial impressions from this event! Will the pessimism persist or will GAF actually even excited about the things mentioned (especially gaming related)? Only time will tell...

I'm more curious than hyped, but let's join the fun. Stepping on the train. :)

So Phil Spencer is either going to do his best to erase The Microsoft List of Empty PC Gaming Promises by presenting some cool stuff and games for PC

or

He's going to carve out a place of honor on said list and deliver something completely underwhelming and useless for 99% of all PC gamers.

Either way the reactions will be entertaining and worth all the hype and build up. Let's do this.

am i the only one whis annoyed people didnt like windies 8 but are fawning over windows? the chsngrs are so tiny its nt even funny. it is oiterally win8 with an optional start menu.

It's a bit silly, but as long as people are happy in the end... It was already apparently the case with Vista and Seven (can't give a personal opinion of Vista, but I'm aware of its bad reputation). Maybe MS already take it into account in their roadmaps, there will be "release for people to hate", and "re-release of same product for people to like".

I have a feeling the big gaming announcement will be that all ID@Xbox indie games will now be crossbuy/crosssave between X1 and PC. That would be pretty cool.

Streaming from the box to PC is an interesting theory but would that use up more system resources on X1?

Can't wait for all the disappointment.

If its seriously just full games on the App store, they're retarded. Accept steam and get over it.

I'm intrigued although my hype levels have stabilized after that mistweet from Nelson. I'll hop on the train and see where it leads though!

Since the X1 is already recording the last 5 minutes of gameplay, I suppose most of the hard work of encoding is already done anyway ; of course streaming would have its own requirements about latency, so it's not as simple as redirecting an existing stream, but there's certainly some overlap.

Closing down Windows basically kills it. Microsoft won't do it. I think a Windows Store is fine to a point, not being a dictating feature for all software. Microsoft are more interested in keeping people within the ecosystem whatever platform it may be, not limiting their freedom to do stuff on the Windows OS. It might make the user experience a bit better for some users by having a safe store for popular applications. Best of both worlds is the only right outcome.

As for a Windows OS subscription, jog the fuck on Microsoft. Not having any of that.

They need to get the store to be the first stop for mundane software needs. Right now the vast majority of security problems comes from random EXEs download off the internet by the users and "free" software that comes full of malware/crapware/adware.

I really wouldn't be against the OS not being able to run unsigned Win32 EXEs out of the box, as long as there was a toggle to enable it like on OSX or something. It would be a huge hit on the spreading of botnets.

I'm weirdly excited. It's more that I'm tired of Win7 and want Win10, so I hope it's good. And if MS announces some games to boot, and doesn't tie them to some bullshit service again, I'm cool with that.

No. Fuck that shit.

An option turned off by default seems like a good compromise right? Savvy folks would just sigh and have an extra step to go through when they put in a fresh install (like turning on seeing hidden folders and file extensions) while the unaware will be protected.

My alarm bells would go off if they announced something like this. What's to stop them from enforcing it permanently later? It'd be like a sneaky first step in a mischievous plan to assume complete control of the platform.
