I don't think it's different at all. You have a hobby and spend money on it, some people take it to the next level but there's nothing inherently creepier/worse about taking your anime interest to the next(too far) level compared with sports, games, movies or whatever. If anything i prefer die hard anime fans(to sports) because they are usually as pacifist as they come while football fans in particular sometimes have violent tendencies(hooligans). If anything, what really annoys me is that so many western otakus seem to think that being an otaku is somehow more normal/accepted in japan than here.

On average yeah they tend to do better, but not all of them. Just strikes me that every time I see articles or even just average forum posting of moe fans or anime fans they always seem to have rather large disposable incomes given the sheer magnitude of their collections. That or they sacrifice a lot of what income they have to fuel their hobby which is rather common across many enthusiasts of all stripes. You rarely see a modest collection.
This is because those people take pictures of their collections constantly. My stuff, for example, is not worth taking a picture of.
Maybe that's why you don't see 'modest' collections, because those people are being modest.

Also, I'm understanding why people are conflating participation in this subculture with virginity and being a manchild, but I was also surprised to discover how many people are sexually active, at least average or somewhat attractive, and participate with everyone else in worshipping Love Lives or whatever. A close friend of mine balances a healthy social life, a relationship, and having conversations about currently airing anime with me when we're both not working, and he's not even close to the only one I know who does this.

Most of these guys doing self-promotion on the Internet are happy to be receiving any sort of attention. It's not like those pictures were taken by security cameras and posted without his permission. His whole schtick is "look at how extreme I am," so having people shrug their shoulders and not comment is probably the last thing he wants.
Even more, when you are specifically talking about outsider subculture, the fact that what you are doing is not mainstream is kind of the whole point.
Measuring the obsession by how much merchandise people buy of either thing ignores what motivates these hobbies. Sports is an intrinsically social, group-oriented hobby, while anime (especially to this degree) is pretty much a solitary endeavor.
Most of the time, sports fans are going to want to be loud and out in the open about their team and their sport; most of the time, anime fans have to be private about their hobby because local law enforcement does not understand that the girl is actually a 3,000 year old dragon.
I don't even really care much about sports, and I'll be among the first to condemn sports culture for its own failings, but it's got nothing to do with the personal weirdness and delusions of anime fans.
Would you disagree that the culture (at least, from the creator side) has done that to itself?

First of all, anime is not just about little girls. There are enough shows that focus on other things or not have little girls at all. And even if they have and even if they feature them prominently, there are other symbols than characters.
Also I think you have a perception problem. You of course see more of sport and sports fans, since the hobby (especially if you take sports as a whole, which features hundreds of sports with fans and at least half a dozen major onces).
Every anime is the same, there is only one creator, only one company that does all the anime. How is your new Nintendo doing? I heard people become killers when playing too much Nintendo. You shouldn't play that kiddy crap.

Look, I enjoy some good anime time to time. But it's ok to admit that something you enjoy is ridiculous.

What I'm saying is, anime is for jerks. Come to terms with that and be happy about the thing you enjoy, without feeling the need to defend it at every turn.
The room of the guy in the OP; the proverbial otaku room (with plenty of posters and merchandise of anime girls, often sexualized), is certainly a dominating part of that culture. It's immediately apparent by looking at the majority of the merchandise that's for sale at any given time.

To be fair, that chair looks like shit and he really should invest more in a chair, especially as he seems to have a lot of disposable income. A good chair is very important, I don't think the person you're quoting was damning the dude.
