Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Are there any panoramic stereo images (or whatever) of scenes like this that you could view in the Rift? I've seen a few 3D panoramas but haven't really explored that kind of thing yet.

I really want to feel some insane heights in 3D.

Had an idea for a rift demo.

Being at the front lines of a medieval infantry charge. You can look around and see your army screaming and waving their weapons. And ahead you can see the enemy army.

Like the cinematic mode in Rome 2.

I got my Oculus on Friday and have been trying a ton of demos since then. So far, in terms of an actual game, Windlands is hands down my favorite. Half-Life 2 works fairly well as well but it took some tinkering to get it to work properly and I still get a bit motion sick after about 30 minutes or so.

Would you guys recommend buying Alien: Isolation to play on Oculus? I had only a passing interest in the game when it was released, but now that I have an Oculus, I heard that the VR in that game was quite good and thought about plunking down the money for it but wasn't sure if it was worth it.

Also, what is the consensus on VorpX? There are bunch of games on it's supported games list that I would love to try in VR but wasn't sure how well that thing actually worked. Anyone have it that can give impressions?

While the scale and immersion in Alien: Isolation is quite, it does drift quite a bit when playing. This drifting, along with other camera controlled prompts, does not make for a pleasant experience some of the time. Do note, that you need to play it on an Xbox 360 controller to reset your orientation (L+R trigger buttons) and I don't think it's possible on a keyboard. Buy it when it's on sale, just don't expect the best VR experience out of it.

I haven't experienced drifting in Alien in the same sense as DK1 drifting, just messed up re-centering.

Playing it comes with hassle (Extended mode, disabling the service, weird centering issues), but I think it's worth it, personally.

I hope they get this kind of stuff sorted out by the time they release the consumer version. Every game seems to have a different list of bullshit that you have to do to get it to run properly. It's a huge pain in the ass to figure out and keep track of it all

I'm pretty confident it will be. It's annoying, but most of the stuff with bullshit to deal with is simply old. Relatively old, I mean. Alien Isolation, early UE4 demos, and Elite (back near DK's release) all use significantly older implementations that require extended mode and/or disabling the service, but most of the stuff that came out starting maybe in September works pretty painlessly in Direct Mode.

Why not just use VR Game Manager by Bilago? thats always how I have always launched Alien without any fuss.

Legend of Dungeon is perfect in the Rift, highly recommended, just run the direct to rift .exe in the install folder, or just add that .exe to VR Game Manager.

This is the kind of shit I can't wait for. I can't decide whether I'm more excited about gaming in VR or all the other uses. I've never tried it but can't get enough of impressions.

A description of one of AMD's talks for GDC:

“This talk will provide a detailed explanation of several mechanisms by which graphics engine developers can dramatically reduce both actual and perceived latency and “stuttering” in graphics and virtual reality applications running on modern GPUs such as those powered by the AMD Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture. Real world examples of optimized AAA content will be discussed and explained, complete with before and after performance metrics.

This talk will give developers the tools and understanding required to exploit modern GPU architectures to take their graphics engines to the next level: extremely low latency, stutter-free, liquid smooth graphics at high frame rates (90-120Hz and beyond)."

Oh wow, Legend of Dungeon really looks fantastic in the Rift.

There's something about the diorama presentation that not only works incredibly well in VR, but feels strangely intimate and "there". Maybe one of my top favorite things to play around in VR now. I would probably be sinking hours into this now if only my Direct to Rift Mode worked better (it's been giving me judder since SDK 0.4.3). Either way, playing a game like this makes me wonder what a Castlevania or Zelda-style game would be like if it was given a similar presentation.

No demo but it's only $10 on Steam and it seems like it does go on sale on occasion. From what I played of it a while back it's a decent action rogue-like with a good thick dose of atmosphere. When I played it recently it seemed like they've made a substantial amount of updates to it including a bunch of hidden secrets and character classes. So if you have a taste for rogue-likes it might be worth your $10 even if you have issues trying to get it running on your Rift.

tried some demos over the weekend

airdrift - my most played demo, spent a good 45mins playing it. it's a flying game in 1st person a little like pilot wings where you can go through rings on a course but there's also free mode where you can fly around aimlessly, flying up the side of mountains then swooping down as close as you can get to the ground is far too addictive

Tuscany feat. AstoundSound & TrueAudio - an older demo but still good, can't wait to get more demos of this astoundsound 3D audio, the speaker in particular sounded excellent at any position around it and really helped to make you feel you were in the room

blazerush demo -whilst it's not exactly the greatest game, this does go a long way to show you that vr is certainly not going to be exclusively about 1st person experiences, will be buying this

birdy king land - had no idea what this was before i started it, i was sat there waiting for something to happen when a pig jumps on the motorbike next to you leans over and starts talking to you in french, was a weird experience to say the least, enjoyed it though

Great, some much needed competition for Nvidia.

Oculus has been careful not to align itself specifically with any GPU manufacturer (these are driver tweaks not hardware), despite the gaming PCs powering CES 2015′s public Crescent Bay demos were all running on nVidia GPUs (believed to be 980GTXs).
I think this was confirmed - single GTX980s.

I put in my order last week. Says available in 1-2 weeks on the Oculus site. My order is still pending waiting on supply. I'm surprised Oculus doesn't have these thinks in stock. I guess they are made as they are ordered? I hope it ships this week. I can't wait to play Half Life 2 in VR. Also can't wait to play Assetto Corsa in VR. Plus all those amazing demos. Hopefully my 780ti SLI setup will be more than enough to run every game with everything on max graphical settings.

SLI currently does not work well with VR. You will likely get a more consistent experience if you use one card. And no, you won't be able to run 'everything' at 'max'. There's unoptimised stuff, and there's stuff with extra high settings that nobody can use (yet). But you should get very good performance with a 780Ti in most DK2-supported software.

Decided to show DK2 to some friends yesterday and am having some serious problems. Is Direct HMD broken in 0.4.4? And Extended doesn't seem to be combining the images when looking through it in every app. I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, even going back to 0.4.3 at one point. Still not working. Any ideas?

Do you have a g-sync monitor?

My problem since 0.4.3 runtime with direct mode was solved when I started to use my projector instead of my Asus Swift.

It is known by oculus and nvidia.

Man, I just keep coming back to New Retro Arcade. More than any other demo I've played it really feels like a place. I'm enjoying dropping other games into the machines as well.

Cool, thanks for the info. I guess I'll just have to play around with settings and stuff but it doesn't surprise me that SLI doesn't work well with VR yet. What's been the best VR experience for you so far and which version of the Rift do you have?

Nvidia's latest drivers are a no-go for the Rift. You need 344.75.

I'm using a DK2. Best 'introduction to VR' demo for me is Sightline: The Chair (but this is one example of a demo that could do with further optimisation). Titans of Space is a good example of a well-polished demo. There have been many other impressive things recently like Toybox Turbos and Vox Machinae. But I mainly use it for driving sims, of which Live For Speed, Assetto Corsa and iRacing have the best implementations. The one game I've yet to try that seems to get the most praise is Elite: Dangerous.

Direct Mode works for some games, and not others (compatibility is much better with newer games and demos). When it works it's hassle free and the best way to use the rift, but if I know I'm going to be going through a lot of demos over a couple of hours I use extended mode + rift as primary monitor (it has to be primary to ensure 75fps) + DirectToRift exes, which is what I did at a party last Friday and I haven't had anything fail to work under those conditions. It's just a bit more fiddly looking through the rift with one eye to drag windows and press buttons on the desktop.

The only other issue I can think of is that you're using the latest Nvidia driver 347.09 which doesn't work with the rift. Roll back to earlier drivers.

Im not sure if this is the best place to ask about Vireio to force certain D3D9 games to VR.

Anyways, installed the program and it injects properly to games but its splitting the image 4 times instead of only 2... Only tried Dirt 3 so far.

In the options I tried "Oculus VR", "DIY VR" and also "Side By Side", they all split the image in 4 sections instead of 2.

Not sure if it matters, but im using an AMD 290x

Is the DK2 worth buying or should I wait for the next version? I wanna play Elite: Dangerous and Assetto Corsa with it.
If you can't want, then naturally it is worth buying - it's the best VR headset currently available to the public. But my guess is if you've waited this long, you can probably wait some more. The consumer version will be significantly better. :)

Depends on your personal economy and taste/preferences of course.

We also have very few clues for when the consumer version is going to be released.

So it's a tough question. to answer

If you was me, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.. But yeah.. I don't know if you are so-to-speak :)

You're not making this easy.

I want one... but I'm worried even the DK2 is still going to make me sick. Motion sickness with the DK1 was really bad for me.

Head tracking makes a huge difference. Whenever my DK2 loses tracking due to a bug or whatever it feels horrible!

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for.

Did you try any cockpit-based games with DK1, and were they more comfortable? (And if so, how long could you last?)

I haven't no. Just Half-Life 2 and a number of other first person shooters (Doom 3, Quake 2). Pretty awesome, but maybe not ideal... Lasted for about 8 minutes in HL2 I think. Consecutively shorter each time after that because the smell of the foam started to be a Pavlovian trigger for nausea.

First thing I would try if I were to get a DK2 would be Elite.

How do you get positional tracking again if you lose it? I can't see the camera boundaries in the demo scene.

Also, what are the best recent demos/games? Haven't been in touch with what came out in the last few months and the riftarcade site has been down for days.

In Assetto Corsa, you're better off playing it on a monitor screen, the road and the distance is too blurry in DK2.

Motion sickness still exists. I recently tried the Vox Machinae demo, I had nausea for a good hour.

I haven't made anyone sick with either Elite or Assetto Corsa. Cockpit games are generally fine, as you're sitting in real life and in the game. First Person Shooters are pretty much the primary causes of nausea (though the DK2 helps alleviate it somewhat).

Yep, FPS is pretty much the worst thing you can do. If you go for a DK2, be prepared for it to initially trigger nausea as it smells exactly the same - I had the same reaction, and took many hours to convince my silly brain that it was actually a pretty comfortable experience compared to DK1. But FPS-style games remain a problem without control adjustments (e.g. yaw snapping). As others have said, cockpit-based stuff should feel much better, so you should be fine with Elite (once you've got over the initial period).

Debatable.

Understood, thanks for the help guys.

Make of this what you will (potential good news for you):

I lasted about 30 seconds in Half-Life 2 with the DK1 before I got motion sickness..

HL2 with a DK2 I last about 5-10 minutes. So, already better with a DK2.

AND; in Elite Dangerous I get no sickness whatsoever, and I play it almost every evening these days. One day I logged almost 5 hours in E:D; Still no sickness. Same with Assetto Corsa. Alien Isolation is also pretty damn fine.

In Assetto Corsa, you're better off playing it on a monitor screen, the road and the distance is too blurry in DK2.

I agree that it's unfortunate that "the looking ahead spot" sometimes can feel a bit pixelated, but I completely disagree with the monitor part, the VR experience alone is so stunning that after playing it with a DK2 and G27 there's no going back (for me, and in fact it has possibly ruined my want to play any racing game on a monitor ever again..) :)

I think the difference is huge. I tried the DK2 without head tracking and without low persistence. I almost puked. What a horrible experience!

Man, I really had no idea how many people were still getting motion sickness from the DK2 kit. I thought the DK2 kit was supposed to iron out all the motion sickness problems from the DK1 kit. I'm starting to regret my purchase now :( Oh well, too late to cancel my order as it's probably going to be shipping within the next few hours. The only games I want to play on the DK2 are Assetto Corsa and Elite Dangerous. Hopefully I won't get motion sickness from these games. I'd like to try out all the cool VR demos too. Like the roller coaster ones. Those look awesome.

If it makes you feel any better, I was getting motion sickness consistently with basically every demo I tried. But yesterday I bought Elite Dangerous, and played it for 3 hours without issue. Absolutely zero motion sickness whatsoever.

Same here. 30 seconds in a rollercoaster is worse than 8 hours of Elite Dangerous.

Most of the issues come from the software side now, i.e, content poorly optimized for the Rift in terms of optics or movement. Even CV1 will give you motion sickness in some circumstances.

I also wouldn't take people talking about HL2 as your basis for being worried, from what I've read on Reddit and on here, that game seems notoriously difficult for many people to stomach in VR.

For what it's worth, there are a lot of people who experience no discomfort because of vection. It is very much a scale, and it's something you can become used to.
