Besiege - Physics based vehicle construction goes medieval

Saw this while browsing Greenlight, and it looks pretty fun

Alpha trailer

Alpha is available for $7.
Now available on Steam Early Access
Currently has:
  • 15 fully destructible/flammable campaign levels, depicting regal castles and battallions of knights
  • Many block types : flamethrower, motors, explosives, hinges, armour and much more
  • Sandbox Mode
  • Limitless Build Mode can be activated in any campaign level
  • Time Dilation Dial (to view the carnage at any speed you desire, including super slow-motion)
  • Combustible livestock!
Besiege is a physics based building game in which you construct medieval siege engines and lay waste to immense fortresses and peaceful hamlets.

Build a machine which can crush windmills, wipe out battalions of brave soldiers and transport valuable resources, defending your creation against cannons, archers and whatever else the desperate enemies have at their disposal.

Create a trundling behemoth, or take clumsily to the skies, and cause carnage in fully destructible environments!

A few GAFfer builds

Top comment on the RockPaperShotgun article, seems to sum up the game pretty well
I’ve now lost two entire nights’ sleep deliriously tweaking the design of a war engine which is, in essence, a 30 foot-wide armoured lawnmower. Its six wheels remain infuriating weaknesses, their suspension worked to breaking point by the mounds of diced corpses that the device generates, but it usually manages to retain enough of them for long enough to complete its gruesome mission. I consider this to constitute a success.

For some reason these two .gifs gave me sudden hope for the RTS genre...

Age of Empires with a serious physics, weather, 'living world' advancement... not even by modern standards, but perhaps in 4-5 years... could totally change how we view the genre.

Has anyone bought the alpha? I'm a little interested but...well it's an alpha.
Haven't seen many previews, but this is a good impression from RPS comments
I don’t see why everyone’s so up-in-arms about a game still in alpha. Honestly, this feels more polished than a number of fully released games I’ve played lately. The only thing lacking are additional levels, and if the only thing I want is more, I can’t really complain. Once this thing has an editor and workshop support, there’ll be no shortage.

I’m generally cautious when it comes to alpha stuff, but for less than a fiver, with the promise of a steam key, this really is worth it. I burned through the levels (literally, in several cases) in the course of a few hours, and found it pleasantly entertaining.

The thing is, unlike most alphas I’ve played, this is already a game. It’s already fun in its present state, and aside from wanting a few more advanced controls (And controller support, which might let me control my fliers well enough to… well… fly), and obviously more levels to play through, it already feels nearly complete.

If you were a fan of the old Crush the Castle flash game (And the insufferable Angry Birds series that ripped it off), you’ll like it. Hope that helps anyone sitting on the fence.

Ugh, damn these awesome little alpha games and their low prices. This now makes 5 early access games purchased in the last 2 months. Thanks a lot.

This looks brilliant, just from the gifs and RPS comments posted I know it's something I want to play, and $7? So in.

Looks like TerraTech, which is in Beta now.

New trend emerging, I see.
Between Autocraft, Scraps, Crashtastic, Bad Piggies, and even Fantastic Contraption, the genre's been thriving for a while. Played the Terratech alpha a while ago. That focuses on resource collecting and combat, while this seems to be more of a puzzle game and building crazy vehicles that fail hilariously

Just imagine...

...this type of a game, but with the PhysX FleX unified physics solver instead. Rigid/soft bodies, smoke, fluids, cloth, ropes etc. all interacting realistically, and without clipping, with each other.

We probably need quite a lot more GPU power before it's viable to have a game built around all that physics.

Just normal physx is quite the performance hog in games today.

Any GAF impressions yet? Seems like a few people decided to check this out yesterday

It is playable and quite fun. There is a bug like undo and redo button is not working properly and add a mess to my creation instead. Other than that, the game is working just fine.

15 level campaign is a bit short but it is only $6.99 and they promise a lot more in the future. (Seem like there are 4-5 more sets of campaign from the start screen and There is moon map that will be available in the future.)

I have played for 10 levels. I think the level design is too simple(however, it is only the first set of campaign.). There is not many block in this game yet but I can create many crazy things from them. I hope they will add more kind of block and weapon in the future. This alpha also lack of tutorial. I have to find out myself how thing work in this game.

But is that a bad thing? I got Autocraft last year and the first levels are boring easy tutorials with limited blocks. I'd rather have a game be "Here are your tools. Experiment and figure out how things work" then wasting early levels on "This is a cannon. You can place the cannon here. Fire the cannon to complete this level"

You know what I mean? Experimentation and failures are like half the fun in these physics-based building games

Can't say that it is a bad thing but I'm quite lost for a moment because tutorial is too fucking short. (only tell me how to place those blocks together and this is my first game of this genre.)

Looks very cool. And only $7 for the alpha (and comes with a steam key eventually). Will probably swoop.

So basically an Nvidia exclusive game. No thanks.

Looks good, music was from the halo believe commercial which I think makes me want it more

I find it a bit cheap to just steal the music from the trailer of another highly popular gaming franchise but still props to the almost unheard-of Polish composer, one of the best original music pieces of 2007

as someone who loved Banjo and even Cargo, this game is made for me
