Can we ban the word "waifu" from NeoGAF?

I'm really going to try to not debate this topic seriously here, but it's more about how literally any topic can quickly get derailed by people expressing their desire to have a romantic interest with a virtual character or real life person.

The term (along with "husbando") had to be banned in a Persona 5 thread because it became too overbearing. That's my stance on this.

I love how PersonaGAF has created the biggest detestors of the word waifu, contrary to what the rest of GAF thinks about Persona fans

#NoMoreWaifusInPersona

I'm not gonna try and get the word banned though. People can be obnoxious, just let them be prepared to be called out for being obnoxious

You do realize that the term "waifu" is used to avoid the sexualization and objectification of female characters and meant to express that they feel true love towards their 2d characters

"waifu" is literally wife spoken in broken english

Not sure if this is really any better really. Both are pretty off putting.

I actually support the use of the word "waifu" in many situations for a particular reason: because the use of the word typically indicates the speaker is conscious of their creepiness.

I think men objectify women regardless. I'd rather they be self deprecating about it in the process.

To the OP's discredit I can't think of a time when it wasn't used tongue-in-cheek. Maybe that's where the dislike comes from? It's a word solely used for jokes.

The way it's used doesn't matter when the result is the same: it dominates and derails threads regularly. I'd like to discuss a game that happens to feature multiple women without being interrupted by "best girl" and "waifu" discussions. It's a nuisance.

This forum needs more moe and waifus IMO. More lovely non-offensive big eyed cuties.

Even in threads where the games that have dating/social elements?

It's just some dumb overused term that most people use to say "oh this female is very endearing to me, she gets the reptilian part of my brain flexing". I highly doubt it's taken seriously by most people here.

Also, maybe I just haven't really been looking, but where has it really derailed threads? The one you linked seems pretty fine from the glance I took at the most recent posts.

A quick Google search revealed 40 600 instances of Waifu used in neogaf.com.
Waifu domination is apparent. My personal favorite use "0/10 would not waifu" by Kingtako

Husbando doesn't fit. Hasubando FTW

This I can get behind. If its in a manga/anime thread, then OP can avoid it as much as he wants since its his preference. Otherwise, please lock up the thread if possible.

I assumed it was ironic like a lot of people but now games like HuniePOP get like multi page threads of people that seem to actually enjoy it so now I don't know what to believe.

In all seriousness, I hate seeing that word... if you want to call it that. It's seemingly impossible to post a picture of any attractive female without people immediately sexualizing/objectifying her. Even when used sarcastically, it sets an uncomfortable tone. Hell, a thread about Jamie Lee Curtis was recently derailed because certain people here couldn't keep their fantasies to themselves. Realistically, I don't think it's possible to enforce a ban of this caliber, but it sure would be nice if people removed that word from their vocabulary.

.

I have a bigger issue with people who have a harem of Waifu's instead of just having one. I'm in a monogamous relationship with Gwen from iZombie and I would never cheat on her.

I recall this sort of thing happening twice in the time I've used GAF, and both times it has been rather obnoxious. The first is the well know banning of the term in the Persona 5 thread because it got out of control, and the second occurred in one of the Smash OT and carried over for a few pages, but those threads were hardly just about Smash if you go back into them. That doesn't mean that it didn't take away from possibly worthwhile conversation.

Yes, because we definitely need more of those threads about moe characters that were seen a week or two ago /s.

I'm assuming you're joking of course.

Context matters, as always. However, even Persona discussions tend to go that way reliably, and there's so much more in those games to talk about.

People have a wide variety of tastes my man. With what seems like nearly 150k members it's a given.

I guess that's what I mean. Repeating the same joke can be tiring and eventually loses a lot of communicative nuance. It's a verbal meme.

I think we should ban the words 'the', 'yes', 'does' and 'Florida' for a day just to see what happens.

And auto replace them with 'mai waifu'.

Husbandos?
Is joke

Unfortunately social aspect a big part that draws the crowd for persona... good with the bad.

If it's not something like active hate speech(and that's still essentially intent rather than the word itself), I think banning words is nonsense.

Tell people to stay on topic?

I'm glad you agree. This was the point I was trying to make. Maybe I should have put more effort into the OP, but I doubt people would have read it anyway. Like I said, context is important. It's one thing to confine this language to certain areas of the forum, but it shouldn't be derailing Super Mario threads. Now that Rosalina is being included in every game, the "waifu" posts seem more prevalent than ever. And frankly, it's a huge turnoff.

What next, ban discussions of shipping as well? Whole communities would be destroyed!

There'd be nothing left of the Korra threads but bitching on how much it sucks but they continue to watch. Though that shipping shit really alienated me from that thread.
