Can we ban the word "waifu" from NeoGAF?

a friend onf mine was permanently banned from here because he was explaining 4chan slang in a 4chan-related thread. He wasn't aiming the word at anybody in particular, he was just explaining what it was. And he was banned for life for being potty-mouthed.

my point is, banning the absolute use of a word without any context is a stupid idea.

I can see how you don't want conversation to be ruined and derailed but people really shouldn't be surprised when waifu talk pops up in threads related to games with relationship management like Persona or Fire Emblem.

Ban "waifu" because weeabos, but leave "ass," "balls," "cocksucker," "cunt," "fuck," "motherfucker," "piss," "shit," and "tits" alone, because artistic freedom?

Please note, this post is not intended to offend at all. If it's objectionable, please either edit it and/or give me a heads-up

This, even if you banned the word, the same people would still talk about.the relationship aspects of the game. So the derailing argument kinda doesn't work.

Well I'm offended by the "b word"

Waifu talk almost ruined Fire Emblem for me. The next game's thread is sure to be dominated by it, and will keep me from participating in actual discussion about a game I expect to really enjoy. It's a damn shame.

I'm in full support of an actual asterisks filter for it.

Honestly if you took waifu away from a thread such as Fire Emblem
Awakening
or Harvest Moon I think it might actually be killing some of the spirit of the game, personally.

Are we going to start making a bucket list of things that offend me that instantly derail a thread and should be banned? Personally my vote goes to "Is X a JRPG/X Isn't a JRPG"

Still think the solution is banning people derailing threads with a specific kind of subject and not the word itself.

I remember there being a whole bunch of these during the 2012 election.

In all seriousness, I hate seeing that word... if you want to call it that. It's seemingly impossible to post a picture of any attractive female without people immediately sexualizing/objectifying her. Even when used sarcastically, it sets an uncomfortable tone. Hell, a thread about Jamie Lee Curtis was recently derailed because certain people here couldn't keep their fantasies to themselves. Realistically, I don't think it's possible to enforce a ban of this caliber, but it sure would be nice if people removed that word from their vocabulary.

I'd rather ban #notall posts. They add nothing to the discussion, are far more frequent then waifu, and aren't funny. It's one step off from just typing a period in and pressing enter.

Just because you ban "mai waifu" doesn't mean threads getting derailed by "best girl/boy/animal/plant" will magically go away. They're here to stay sadly as more games cater to said demographic.

The concept has become really repulsive lately. There was the excuse that it's always used in jest, etc, but it's still being used, overwhelmingly so, and it's becoming a huge de-rail to a ton of threads. It even often just boils down into people just taking about the term itself, like here. We get it, these games have multiple female (or male, it's annoying there too) characters. You don't have to openly profess your love for one every second of every day. It's cool that you have a favorite character. Maybe you just want to explain why that charcter is your favorite. But the incessant bickering in childish terms just comes off as super embarassing and is a huuuuuuuge turnoff.

I don't think you should *really* have to ban the word, but I do think people should start learning to tone it down a bit. I've personally elected to simply not use the word anymore, whether it be in jest or otherwise.
