Quite enjoyed the episode, although not much happened. Nice to have Arrow back. Except for the action scenes...maybe I'm just imagining things, but they didn't seem as tight as usual.

Liked that episode, the show seems to be picking up after a slow start this season.

Laurel looks good in the canary getup and it's nice to see the canary calls used again

I love this shot:

I'm rewatching the episode and I'm starting to really enjoy Brandon Routh. Superman Returns really put a hex on his career and it sucks cuz I like him in most stuff I see him in.

"I'm the neurosis that requires a 500 dollar an hour shrink!"

I thought we'd have none of Oliver in the present day - so seeing him being taken off the mountain kind of surprised me.

Love this show to death but...

1. Oliver's body would have been completely mangled after a huge drop like that. At least in much worse shape then it was found in.

2. No Lazarus Pit is a bummer. They better have a damn good explanation as to how they were able to bring back Oliver from the dead.

3. Laurel being Black Canary already? Really? A few months of trading and you can become a superhero? I thought there was going to be a huge time jump or something. They couldn't even wait until the season finale? I mean Laura went to doing a little boxing in the gym to having all these superhero moves and abilities and apparently high end tech. Completely stupid unless I'm missing something or it's going to be better explained in the next few episodes. This is "Smallville" Lana Lang quality writing here.

Beyond that, the episode was pretty good and did like to see Roy and Diggle stepping up their game a bit.

A bit weird seeing the actor who plays Brick after having been watch Galavant. lol

The writers said that just because she puts on the outfit it doesn't make her a superhero. She still has a lot of training and learning to go, which is why she's using the canary cry as a clutch. Expect her to get her ass kicked in the upcoming episodes.

IDK why but Laurel's way of swinging that staff bothered me. It just looked... Awkward.

Probably intentional. More rage than precision.

That was actually one of my favorite bits from the episode. She put some real weight behind it.

Did everyone forget Laurel kicking ass in early Season 2? Pretty sure she got some solid hits in as early as S1, too.

Being able to throw a solid punch from time to time in a small fight doesn't make you a superhero. lol not even close.

Nothing about her appearance in the costume said she had superhero moves and abilities. The Canary Cry device was Sara's and she took it, along with the staff and whatever else from the Arrow cave. Everything else she was able to do because the Canary Cry device fucked the dudes up first.

The point is that she should be no where ready to join Team Arrow as a masked vigilante with the tiny amount of training she has gotten. I'll wait and see how it developers over the course of the season. I'm merely voicing my concern over this particular story plot. I'm a huge Arrow fan regardless of disagreeing with a decision or two the showrunners may make.

From Guggenheim:

“Just because you put on a mask and a costume doesn’t mean you’re a superhero. A mask does not a hero make. We’re really at the beginning of Laurel’s journey to becoming the Black Canary, not the end by virtue of the fact that she’s put on a costume.”

not sure what that "lol" is for

2x01 she takes on goons in an impressive fight, and even as early as 1x03 she has some moves

in this fight she hits em with a canary cry and gets a few solid hits in on 2 unsuspecting goons... at this point in the show, how is laurel not capable of that?

everyone runs into shit when they start doing the vigilante thing.... i wouldn't be concerned that the showrunners are making laurel invincible

Solid episode last night. I too had raised an eyebrow how Merlin was traveling around so quickly...lol

WHy? The sacred grounds were pretty close to Starling City. Ra's traveled to Starling after all and then during his talk with Felicity Oliver clearly stated he's not going to Nanda Parbat for the duel.

how long has roy been training and is he supposed to have some type of background before before joining team arrow outside of doing awesome flips lol? he was just a common thief on the streets right?

seems to get his ass embarrassed often though. just has that mirakuru crutch. assuming that both him and laurel would get beat up by other minor characters like suicide squad, china white, huntress, cupid chick etc.?

The show has been very good in showing the gaps in training between people. Diggle has shitload of experience and yet Oliver can handle him without breaking a sweat. Roy had skills before be started the whole vigilate thing, he got trained for a year by Oliver and yet Cupid still easily took him out.
Laurel will propably never come close to Oliver/Sara/Nyssa level and she's bound to screw up a lot early in her career.

Episode 13 Synopsis:

Episode 13:
Canaries

VERTIGO (GUEST STAR PETER STORMARE) RETURNS AND PITS CANARY AGAINST BLACK CANARY — Oliver (Stephen Amell) is thrown by the changes within Team Arrow. He’s used to calling the shots but sees that the team has evolved in his absence and tensions quickly escalate in the lair. Oliver is furious that Laurel (Katie Cassidy) has been going out as the Black Canary and tells her to stop risking her life, but when Vertigo (guest star Peter Stormare) hits the streets again, Laurel goes against Oliver’s wishes and tracks down Vertigo who hits her with a full dose of the drug. Laurel’s biggest fears revolve around her sister Sara (guest star Caity Lotz) so the Vertigo causes her to hallucinate an epic fight between Canary and Black Canary. Meanwhile, Chase (guest star Austin Butler) surprises Thea (Willa Holland), and Roy (Colton Haynes) warns Thea to stay away from Malcolm (John Barrowman).
Michael Schultz directed the episode written by Jake Coburn & Emilia Ortega Aldrich.

I liked the episode, including our black sheep Laurel and our emotional fangirl Felicity. I get why she would quit, she was the only one living a 'fairytale' life. Roy lived in the Glades, his family was messed up, he was a street level criminal and he was bound to go to jail. The Arrow gives him purpose, even if Oliver isn't there. Diggle has been a soldier his entire life, he is used to getting orders and cleaning up criminals. It is the only thing he knows how to do. Felicity joined the team because she wanted Walter freed and then she stayed for Ollie. She wants to do the right thing, but she is crippled by loss of Sara and Ollie. It is why she guilt-trips Ray.

I get the feeling he has some mechanical upgrades on those pants. He can jump from high places and land easily on his feet. It would be kinda nice for team Arrow to get some upgrades like that to be able to match people like The Flash.

So, people question Laurel putting on a custom, taking some hi-tech and hitting two almost incapacitated dudes with a huge metal stick but Roy turned into a super-hero without as much as proper training and no one did even mention it?

Sure internet, sure..*sigh*

And I still don't like Laurel's character that much (liked her much better in season one. She just seems so grumpy and whiny all the time now and I just don't buy it). Comes over as spoiled brat instead of going through hard times and wanting to do the right thing..
Dunno, the end was a bit "anti-climatic". All went really fast and without any proper explanation. They might still do that but still..it's like: Nope - Oh hello!

Ermm..what are you talking about? He's been trained since halfway through S2. And even before that he was far more capable fighter than Laurel in S1-2.

Now, I don't think Laurel did anything unrealistic. She used gadget and finished them off by hand, which was smart.

And she would still be one of the better Banes, because most media completely forgot about his intellect. Give Felicity a barrel of Mirakuru and she would make a fine, aryian female Bane.

Felicity celebrates Hanukkah.
