Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 19-25 | As Seen On WSHH

Hopefully Pokken ends up good, if we can have a good localized Gundam Extreme VS- like game with huge support here in the west, I'd love it.

I think it could end up as an important game for Nintendo. There isn't much to go on, but I'm assuming it'll be a very simple button masher type affair with flashy effects. This will be perfect for a young audience just looking to get into fighting games after growing out of Smash.

Q/Dahbomb, if I'm available around that time, you guys mind if I participate? That actually sounds like a lot of fun.

SFIV gets you right back into it.

Not as bad as ArcSys games, but could be faster. I want to skip the Victory Cutscenes.

Games that don't allow quick rematches often create these frustratingly awkward moments between matches that often kill momentum in regards to fun factor. SFIV isn't exempt.

I didn't understood Pokkén was a gundam like game. Interest for the game now = 0. :(

What? :(

:lol
Yeah go for it, it's definitely possible. :o (my parents won when I was little so it's not impossible. >.>)

The Namco partnership is really paying off I'd say.

Gonna copy my post over for those that saw the Pokken footage.

Pikachu = Jin/Kazuya/Heihachi/the other guy (Tekken Shoto?)
Lucario = Actual Shoto
Machamp = Gief
Suicune = Zoner (Could almost say Glacius but I don't know if they'd take inspiration from Western fighting games)
Gardevoir = Not sure (Rose?)
You guys know more about these sorts of archetypes than I do so any ideas would be appreciated.

Yeah and the Pokemon license will help it stay alive for awhile.
Yup, it also seem simpler than Smash, while still looking more like a traditional fighter than Naruto and DBZ games. Has the potential to get a lot of people into fighting games.

I think talking about how simple/complex Pokken will be in relation to other fighting games is kinda meaningless. If people decide to play the game in tournaments, it will become fairly complex. At that point, we look at what kind of ceiling the game will have. I think it will surprise us. Or it's upgrade/revision might.

Training mode rooms are 2 people only x.x

But Skype chats aren't?

Come on now. Shit like this got released worldwide, why Pokken wouldn't.

Oh, talking about complexity at entry level, movements/moves/blocking/etc... Just based on movement and it being a health bar fighter, it looks easier to pick up and play than Smash.

I watched the trailer and saw nothing that would indicate any of these archetypes fit the bill

why do people always try to appropriate characters into sf2 archetypes as if that's applicable to every FG

yes wolf has throws
no he's not "a grappler"

Yeah how can you say Wolf is similar to an SF type character, there are no Canadians in SF.

Machamp does look like a grappler with a lariat. He's really slow, but once he got in, was really hard to deal with. Not sure if the trailer showed that, but it was clear in the few matches they played with him.

akira is totally a shoto though right
Not even in DFC. ;p

Eeh, watched a few matches and this seems more like Naruto UNS than GvG or Virtual On to me.

Small arenas, focus on blocking instead of dodging, apparently each pokemon only has one or two guard breaker/throw like moves... I am not a fan of how the game stops for a second to show the assist appearing.

Still looks fun but not in the long term.
Those triple Pikachu god fist juggles and dat super tho

I wonder if Pokken will get an arcade release in the US.
It's definitely possible, considering Bandai Namco just released an arcade Nintendo game last year.

totally possible. my bowling alley back home has the mario kart arcade game from two years ago, which namco worked on

This post is killing me lol.

I had a friend who played it with me. I main Jiroubou, who was one of the only characters in the game that I'd consider a grappler aside from Chouji. My friend would pick top tier characters like Itachi, and every fight with him was a chore.

Hate's probably too strong a word to describe my feelings on that particular Naruto fighter, but I REALLY tired of the gameplay after a while. It's hard to convert a lot of damage when you can safely KnJ(aka burst) out of combos every time you get half of your meter--which is really easy to do in that game, and knockdowns basically whittled down to landing either your unblockable super or unavoidable command throw if your character had one.

A lot of the top characters were super good to the detriment of bottom characters which is to be expected of an anime fighter.

Defense was really good too. The metagame pretty much revolved around the burst (you can bait bursts but you don't wanna be reckless with your offense when they have the meter so you played a game of chicken first for a bit) but that pretty much tends to be the case with all games that have some form of combo breaker.

Yeah, not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination but I was merely comparing it's base design (fundamentals) to what I've seen of Pokkens. It seems like your issue with that naruto game are all related to how it's metagame unfolded and character balancing which could very much so wind up differently for Pokken.

So can you play Pokken with another person on the same screen? It looks like the screen is focused on one player and it would be awkward to be controlling the character that's further away.
