Anita Sarkeesian shows what one week of harassment directed at her looks like

The funny part is that the more she posts these on her Twitter, the more people will Tweet at her more and more outlandish comments in an attempt to gain attention.

It's not ironic that her view on Tropes and Women in Video games is strongly reinforced by her real life situations, but I think a lot of people, including myself, hate that she garners further attention by bringing attention to herself, and her own situation.

Ban me if you want, but I am of the opinion that you should not put out negativity in a public forum. If every celebrity published their hatemail and death threats on a weekly basis, I'm sure it would match or exceed the tweets she receives.

She CHOOSES to make this public, and it on exacerbates the situation, but again, it's beneficial to her cause, because she is using it as ammunition.

It's simply a vicious cycle, and makes me sick to my stomach. If she were to simply go on publishing her video series, and ignore the haters, this situation would have never arose.

I'm not saying she brings it on herself, I'm saying she is allowing herself to be a larger victim and target than she needs to be.

It's the Lizard Squad phenom. They'd be harmless without attention.

...But in this particular situation, those tweets can be used as evidence that supports her arguments. It's beneficial for the cause if more people see this sort of mentality is very much rampant. Some might say sexism/misogyny barely exists until you present them with such overwhelming evidence, for example.

This shit brings me back to XBL days, it's so awful and dumb. Can't believe this is one week of hate, and the fact that it never stops, unreal.

Some of these have me laughing with how absurd they are.

She screencapped more than 160 hateful tweets. That's just screencaps. Just for posterity in case those twitter users get banned or delete themselves out of shame.

I'm glad she screencapped that many so people would eventually get tired from going one by one and then realising it didn't stop until a long way down to send home the message that it's a lot.

Props to her for sticking through it all. Braver that I'll ever be.

...these aren't anonymous though. I mean a lot of these presumably link to their public Twitter persona, and likely their facebook accounts.

A lot of these kinds of accounts are anonymous as a result of Gamergate spurring gators out of their imageboards and subreddits to push their shitty hashing and harrass people on twitter. You can usually tell who is a channer or gator by their liberal use of images and memes from 4chan or whatver for their avatars and handles.

look out everyone, saying something mean about people trying to drown someone in death threats/rape threats/general bile is hypocritical

gotta hug the hate out of them

Sad thing is just trying to tweet something positive very likely will get you jumped on by the pack, it's happened before

I laughed. Out loud.

x)

I figured that kind of thing would happen but it really gets me down that she is getting bombarded with these negative posts. She's a real trooper.
Wait, what?
There are active imageboards and message boards that, I kid you not, call out people doing stuff like this. Randomly trigger someone? Bullied, doxxed, whatever. Anyone. No logic behind it. They read and will link to stuff on NeoGAF because we try to force diversity on people and ban threads on games like Hatred and Criminal Girls. Or something? Look, you have to ask them for their logic. I can only tell you what's been happening and that we're "part of the problem".

Recent victims of stuff like this include a mass campaign against a handful of Wikipedia editors that lasted for 3+ months for the sole reason that they were editing GamerGate-related articles to their displeasure.

Sorry if I'm sounding creepy or terrifying, but this is the sad reality of things for a lot of people.

this really pisses me off, it isn't an excuse for people publicly posting your home address and having rape and death threats.

I think you're missing the meaning of "anonymous" in this situation...even if you're from "Anonymous", most of these have handles and pictures of themselves, so they're not anonymous.

When will these losers ever stop? Threatening to rape and kill a woman because they don't like her journalism? Anita gets how many death threats for voicing her opinion? It's disgusting

I...just...this is so incredibly depressing.

However:

This one kinda gave me a chuckle coz like...the worst thing in the world he can think of to do to her account is putting gay porn everywhere. Like he's imagining she'd come back to find it, fall to her knees, and cry out 'oh, no! Not *gay* porn! My account is ruined forever!!'
This one also made me laugh. It's not just that it's ineffectual, it's that it's so specific. It's kinda like saying "I'm gonna draw mustaches on my poster of you!"

Yeah, this is inarguably wrong. I'd be fine if these people were just disagreeing. But you don't need to make death threats to disagree. You don't need to wish ill on the person to disagree. There are a ton of people I disagree with on the internet, but I'm not going to tell them to go die or some shit like that. It's awful, and it really only hurts your own case

They won't return to explain

"It's not that bad it's just random trolls she should lighten up."
"Men get threats too just look at any male youtuber."
"She's a celebrity so of course she gets all kinds of attention including unwanted she probably profits off it."
"It's not legitimate threats."
"Both sides both sides both sides."

So pick one.

Cheers for calling me out. Especially after I posted a response.

I mean I don't agree with her at all, but these are just silly.

It's like people get amped up on some drug that makes them swear as much as possible and use as little rational thinking as possible.

The sad truth is never. It will never truly go away. These people are misogynistic, hateful people.

People really need something better to do with their lives than insulting people over the internet. I mean really people, what are you trying to accomplish by threatening other people? If you disagree with them, come up with a decent counterargument.

The only cause this shows is that there are idiots on Twitter. It's probably the same subset that spewed all that racist BS to Miss America.

Damn. Her Twitter is Probably more fucked up than Anitas. To think what would happen if Nina Davuluri went public.

.....or any Twitter celebrity for that matter.

Ok...

"I disagree with a lot of your points on feminist frequency and overall I think you're rather disingenuous."

That's all you have to say. There's no excuse for this bullshit.

I LOL'd at the one guy who called her a "Paki". Despite the fact she's Armenian, like my wife is. The ignorance is incredible.

Not to mention Sarkissian is one of the most common Armenian names in the world. Whatever she's said and done, more power to her. Nobody deserves death threats.

Twitter is in desperate need of an actual moderation team and a good ol' fashioned rules revision. Their platform is fairly important these days, yet they continue to do very little to keep it a desireable platform to stay on.

It's like people get amped up on some drug that makes them swear as much as possible and use as little rational thinking as possible.

Since it seems these tweets seemed to have been a response to something she said about Call of Duty, more and more I think we can't deny that violent games have some sort of impact on how people act.

I know even GAF has difficulty admitting that, but at this point I don't think these violent reactions are completely unrelated to the media they consume.

I think you're missing the meaning of "anonymous" in this situation...even if you're from "Anonymous", most of these have handles and pictures of themselves, so they're not anonymous.

I know what you mean, but there has been a wave of new twitter accounts that have no real names or pictures attached to them that are harassing people like Anita.

Would you be surprised at the amount of antisemitic slurs lobbed at her?

Do you think most of the people who dislike her or her videos on principle think that thoroughly? And even then, it's just the same sentiments expressed politely for appearances sake.

It's just not sustainable at their volume. We're talking about trillions of tweets per year.

This is fucking disgusting. I don't care if you agree with her or not (Hell, I've never seen any of her content myself), anyone who says stuff like this or defends this shit is a fucking disgusting human being and should be ashamed of themselves

Agreed. I don;t necessarily agree with some of her points - but yeah, what ever happened to plain 'ol debate and discussion?

It's just abuse, harassment, and (literally) criminal behavior by some, at this stage.

Idiots.

While censorship is bad, some of these are definitely over the top. I don't know why Twitter allows death rapes/rape threats.

Even though you are already banned I think it should be noted what it seems you are getting at.
That interacting with the community is somehow bringing things onto yourself.

Another example I'm noting is with some of the 343i Staff's Twitters. They get some angry hate that understandably deters them from engaging with the community.

Though two different cases, people driven away from communicating with groups at large due to extreme toxicity is awful.

The sad truth is never. It will never truly go away. These people are misogynistic, hateful people.

This is such a cynical view though :\. Some day I really hope and think that these people will learn the error of their ways and gain empathy and kindness towards others, and there will be next to no misogyny in the gaming community. I realize that this is very unlikely but I just don't want to have such a negative outlook on this, I want to see the good in these people, as awful as the things they say are. I believe that deep down, everyone is good, but their viewpoints somehow became perverted and twisted to be this awful.

1) Why arent these people banned?
2) Why arent these people in school?

There is a lot of money to be made teaching these people English. Some of those tweets were incomprehensible.

Do you think most of the people who dislike her or her videos on principle think that thoroughly? And even then, it's just the same sentiments expressed politely for appearances sake.

I can't speak for most people.

Also, I don't think this sentiment is synonymous with threats of rape.

Context is important, but so is the message.

Don't get it twisted; I'm not trying to defend anybody who would post such terrible things. I'd just like to see people raise above it than fall to their standard.
You're comparing saying "fuck these awful people who do awful things" on a random message board to sending death threats to someone for making inoffensive youtube videos.

Forgive me if I misconstrued you, but that's a shitty comparison.

The only cause this shows is that there are idiots on Twitter. It's probably the same subset that spewed all that racist BS to Miss America.

Damn. I wonder her Twitter is about 550000xs more fucked up than Anitas. To think what would happen if Nina Davuluri went public.

.....or any Twitter celebrity for that matter.

The mentality you see displayed on Twitter is representative of what people actually think in real life, but may not necessarily voice in person or public. People don't post this vile shit on twitter and suddenly have a complete change of heart as soon as they log off.

Why? I don't get it.

I'm talking about the Twitter trolls. Why do they do this?

Because it's easy and requires little to no thought process and has literally 0 repercussions.

Imagine if children knew that they could break car windows with baseball bats every day, and the only thing that would happen to them is that there was a POSSIBILITY that they would have their bat taken away, only for the person who took it away to give them a new one upon request.

That's how the internet do.

1) Why arent these people banned?
2) Why arent these people in school?

There is a lot of money to be made teaching these people English. Some of those tweets were incomprehensible.

For 2, they probably are. Twitter on phones is easy.
For 1, that would require twitter to more actively police their service, something which they are not interested in doing as the idea of enforcing their TOS to the fullest comes off as a negative to their community.

A lot of these are (chronologically) adult men and women, and Twitter doesn't see a financial threat in letting these tweets rock. They streamlined the reporting system somewhat and decide to leave reporting to individual users. Even then, they often refuse to suspend accounts even with evidence of sending death/rape threats.

she...likes this?

If it wasnt happening her YT show would be a flop

really
