It's not though. What they want is for her to go away. What their actions are doing is making her more of a prominent figure in the community, reviled or otherwise, and shining a big spotlight on their poor behavior is making them a prime example of what gamers should not be.

I haven't watched it, but it's really irrelevant, because the only way death threats are even remotely acceptable is if the recipient is literally some sort of modern Hitler equivalent and causing many people to suffer in extremely meaningful ways (death, torture, etc.) and that through their death many people would be actively better off. And rape threats are just never acceptable in any situation
I should just get rid of my property and personal effects because that's just inviting theft and burglary right?
Otherwise i'm just looking to get that sweet sweet interaction with police and the insurance payouts right?

The harassment has been going on for years. It doesn't matter if she ignores them or not, they're not going to stop as long as she's present on the internet and making videos.

Sad but unsurprising given the nature of the internet and anonymity.
It's true, these kind of psychos harass anyone that is a public figure that makes their views known. People that hide their identity have always been vicious -- which is why this is a hard solution to fix. These kind.of people exist outside the industry. Ever since the Internet existed, and are a problem beyond just this.
However, sexism in film/games is a consistent thing. It's a constant pattern and history of abuse. So it goes beyond the typical vicious harassment that these kind of people extend by hiding their identity. And females and minorities getting harassed on a daily basis is a very real thing. So it's partly the problem of assholes being assholes on the Internet. But it goes beyond that with psychos that are sexist/racist who go beyond the typical trash talking.
Twitter has become invaluable as a service to make your products more well known and reach more people, just like Facebook. If you have a company or working on projects in ways she's does, then Twitter is important.
However, Twitter has been absolutely terrible with how slow they are on updating guidlines, their reporting system, and features to help people in these kinds of situations.

Sadly that's how homophobes think. They think being gay is the worst thing ever. Notice how most of these people are usually also sexist, and I wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be racist to a degree.

The problem is for a certain subset of gamers, the hobby is so intrinsically tied to their identity and self-worth that any criticism seems like a personal attack against them and everything they stand for.

i don't think she should remain silent on this at all, as it still is an issue. but some of these people aren't just expressing a dislike of her and her content, they are saying the worse things imaginable to get attention.

Yep, being harrassed en-masse began with the launch of her Kickstarter in 2012. There was comparatively little interest in her work beforehand
I don't even think before AS there was much, if any, feminist critique about video games. Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong.

I don't agree with Anita so I won't support her movement, donation or otherwise as in my opinion feminism is one sided and does not promote sexual equality for both genders, but I'm not going to go into detail about my view on that here as this isn't the appropriate thread to do so, that being said these people sending her those tweets are scum plain and simple and I have respect for Anita's abilty to withstand against this harrasment and stand up for what she believes in.
I think it's funny that for all the talk about "gamer" culture, and it being an identity that a collective can be apart of. This idea of being a gamer, as something people can find comradery. If that's true, then gamers should be absolutely angry that their fellow gamers that are female/or minority, are not able to enjoy the same hobby the same way others can. That almost half of "gamers" are being harassed daily.
And whenever you are apart of a group, you are supposed to care about others in the group. So if other gamers are trying to tell you there are things that you could do to make them feel more comfortable, you should listen. If other people in the group are trying to speak out against things that are wrong, you should hear them out.
But nope. Pretty much, everyone is looking out for themselves. I know what I enjoy, I don't care about anyone else. Don't get involved in messing with the things I like.

We've had clear talks about issues in gaming itself, and gotten direct attacks that go beyond just shit talking. I agree that, people who are famous or who make their opinions heard, are almost always going to get negative attacks against them from assholes on the internet. This is an issue that goes beyond the gaming industry. It's been an issue ever since the internet has been around.
But I think at this point, we can say that this is a bigger issue. We have a clear want for, the industry to start changing in certain ways. And there is a clear push back from a group of people. And it's unacceptable.
And whenever you are apart of a group, you are supposed to care about others in the group. So if other gamers are trying to tell you there are things that you could do to make them feel more comfortable, you should listen. If other people in the group are trying to speak out against things that are wrong, you should hear them out.

Pretty relevant - The latest podcast of This American Life speaks about how one troll apologized for his behaviour after insulting a feminist writer with a created account named after the writer's DEAD FATHER. Pretty good insight into the mind of someone who would do something like that.

For the record don't think anita is a saint and is above criticism. Don't agree with much she says but she should have the right to push her views. Reading that stuff reminded me of XBL hearing how horrible people were to minorities. Lets not forget that either. Wonder how we got to this place? Feel both ways people here, and everywhere, need to go easy on the quick insults and stop being so combative.
