I fell for a magazine scam yesterday. Luckily it wasn't that much money.

Really makes me sad that people focus their energy on petty stuff rather than actual real problems.

By most social norms, this is the kind of thing an adult wouldn't be expected to do outside the Internet. So if you feel empowered to do so on a heavily moderated environment like GAF, I absolutely believe people who would be seen as "normal" otherwise would display that kind of incredibly disconnected behavior on Twitter. Which is why I am glad I am not famous. Sure the money may be good, but the fans are either extremely good or extremely bad.

While this is a disgusting display and I fully support a national/international Internet registration system similar to South Korea's with active enforcement, I can't help but find it funny that gamergaters like those in the tumblr post have only served to further Anita's presence and prestige. Ever since GamerGate started she has gotten over half a million in donations, she has been on national news and Colbert. The more misogynistic backlash she gets the more popular she becomes.

The stupid thing about these comments is that they're actually strengthening her cause not weakening it. Shouting a whole bunch of abuse at her isn't going to make her go away.

As for anonymity, I agree with the sentiment that removing anonymity won't/wouldn't change this behavior. It's the lack of consequences that drives it.

Even the biggest shitheads I kn(o/e)w in real life wouldn't say most of this stuff in person. Like, it wouldn't even occur to them to do so, because it would mean consequences of some sort. I'm still waiting on your opinion on the OP, and how you feel about the abuse that Anita has received. I'm also still waiting for you to describe how her kickstarter cash is an important factor when discussing the harassment that she does or does not deserve.

Regardless if you disagree with her -- no one deserves harassment. If you can't debate her on the things you disagree with and you can only resort to harassing her, then you need to question the strength of your own position.

The sad thing is that I think Anita is wrong on quite a few things. And I'm not a fan of her style of not being open for debate. Even Kotaku reached out to do a counter piece style editorial where their writer with offer a counter and she could respond (a civil closed forum) and she declined.

I don't like that she positions her arguments as 100% misogyny without debate or room for others critical analysis. Not all feminists even agree on the same things, and that is fine. But those discussions need to be had. So all these idiots that are harassing her are only making any discussion impossible. So even if they disagree with her they are making it 10x worse. That said, most of the people that I see harassing her and foaming at the mouth don't even have a valid criticism or point they want to argue. They are like toddlers sticking their fingers in their ears going lalalalala. They basically don't want any discussion period. So the harassment and attacks is their way of trying to stop it. So I wouldn't even consider these psychos as having a valid criticism or position.

The 2014 expenditures information says they spent $32,000 on programs, about the same on administration, and up until Q4 last year it looked like donations wouldn't fully cover those expenses. I'm assuming Q4 this year was when she was on TV because they raised nearly $400,000 which you'll be happy to hear they are intending to invest $260,000 into programs this year(2015).
