Nobody chooses to be hipster.

I've heard hipsters being associated with gentrification in urban communities.

In that context, I could understand someone using the term disparagingly and even see how she'd take offense to someone casually calling her a hipster after asking her if she was from the area. That being said, it seems to me the term wouldn't be comparable to racism but her being offended would be comparable with someone claiming something is "reverse-racism".

I don't know why people find the word hipster so derogatory. Yes, it can be meant as an insult, but not always (much like social labels such as geek, nerd, goth, etc). Most of the "hipsters" I have met were good peoples. As Pyramid head explained earlier, being called "hipster" is similar to being called goth, as it can be both descriptive and insulting depending on the context it is being used in. I have friends now that I would label as hipsters and I had friends back in Jr High who I would label "goth". It's not to insult, it's simply meant to describe the flavor behind their social behavior. That's it. *shrug*

I've had to deal with being called a nerd for as long as I can remember. Being a black nerd in the 90's was brutal with Urkel around too. Just brutal. But I'm honestly not that offended by it in my adult years. I guess because it has not held me back at all. Sometimes it's best to just relax on this shit and understand that you've simply been poked by a harmless needle and not stabbed by a rusty dagger.

White guy here. A black friend of mine invited me to a party later with predominantly black guests. I'll get to the bottom of this and ask which slur is more offensive and report back.

Stop playing the offended card all the time.
I'm not playing the offended card. I just don't think people should be labelling others as hipsters when they don't even know them and it is based primarily off their appearance. You could even say they're profiling these people.

Do you think I should just go around calling them each slur to their face and recording their reactions, or should I organize a sort of straw poll?

While the person is an idiot the use of the word hipster has gotten out of control with no real definition anymore. It's just an easy way for most people to say they hate something.

Wow.

The people I know who are hipster-y (myself included, if I'm being honest) don't give a shit if they're called a hipster.

This is absurd.

The girl got pretty upset. She said that hipster is like saying nigger to a black person. I didn't agree. One is a label used to classify a social occurrence, the other is well, horrible.

Ah yes, people who have never experienced prejudice thinking that they know what experiencing prejudice is like.

Here in NYC, referring to someone/suggesting someone is a hipster is an insult. The comparison the girl made is low key idiotic, but I can see why she would be offended by the question...I know I would be.

Comparing the use of the world Hipster to the N word is maybe the most hipster thing I have seen in a while.

Its totally a insult but come on. Tell that person to get over themselves.

Pretty much. Every new phrase describing social behaviors seems to inevitably degrade into meaningless buzzwords. I've seen this with phrases like "emo", "simp", "fedora", "goth", "geek", "jock", "nerd", etc etc

I once got called a nerd and a dumb jock in the same day by two different people. That was fun.

And a kid at my highschool was dealing with his mom being in the hospital and was pretty down about it. Overheard someone say he was "emo". Like, Jesus christ, really?... I'm so glad that phrase is pretty much dead.
