Persona 5 New Trailer

This game has been so long in the making that I wouldn't be surprised if the localization misses the 2015 deadline, unfortunately. Still, let's hope for end of 2015.

I think more optimistically, the game has been in the making for so long it must be almost ready.
Persona team just doesn't leave us wringing in hype for too long by showing trailers too early (looking at you Square Enix and FF XV).

Persona 4, first trailer = March 2008
Release = July 2008
Localization = December 2008

Catherine, first trailer = August 2011
Release = February 2012
Localization = July 2012

So 4 months from reveal for Japanese release and another 5 months for localization in both cases.

I'm hoping for even faster localization now that the game is so popular, so I would bet personally that they can keep their 2015 promise.

Yep, they've actually said as much:
We’re just as eager to bring this game out finally so they can enjoy what all we’ve been working on and day by day, we’re getting closer to the finish line. It’s just going to be a little while longer now before it’s here.

With this new internal engine, Hashino believes that converting their ideas into game form will go considerably smooth.

However, he warned that he expects a lengthy wait until release.

As for localization times, they've been getting faster, but there are variations. There's Persona 4 Arena where the localization time is less than two weeks and Shin Megami Tensei IV which took about 2 months, and then there's Persona Q which took almost 6 months and Etrian Odyssey II Untold which hasn't even been announced.

I've seen one or two people toss this around before, but how likely would a late July/early August release for Japan be? Would a month after P4D be enough? Bonus points if the bomb is dropped at the end of that preorder DVD.

P4 had a music disc included with first-run copies. I have a used copy of the PS2 game that includes a soundtrack CD. Not all Atlus games get a CD but many of them have, at least with the first run. Happens a lot with their 3DS games--Etrian Odyssey IV, Etrian Odyssey Untold, SMT4 and Soul Hackers all got music selection CDs in their first printing. Persona 4 Arena and Catherine got music arrangement discs as well.

Hm interesting, I wonder why they skipped the disc for P3. Yeah, I forgot Catherine came with a soundtrack as well. Definitely is a good reason to buy physical instead of digital for Persona 5.

Given that they first revealed the game in November of 2013 and ballparked a release date of Winter 2014, I'd say we're close. Business shenanigans and the PS4 version have probably had problems.

Well as I just posted I would personally bet their strategy is still (about) the same, so release could as well be in July or August.

They could've postponed the release a little bit so they could release P4D first and at the same time bring the English localization more closer to the Japanese release.

Maybe the P4D disc is even a demo, Catherine had one in January just before its release in February.

oh i definitely feel there will be a release date at the end of the DVD/Blu-ray. Im guessing August/Sept though.

What are the chances some kind, noble soul will take it upon themselves to make a translation guide for the JP version? I really don't want to wait.

I'm importing and ready to help GAFfers in need, story would be naturally too big of a chunk to translate but menus / items / skills and stuff for sure.

The P4D disc has been advertised strictly as a "special movie", so I doubt it. It could either be a promotional video like Persona 3 and Persona 4 got when they were announced (17 minute trailers through Famitsu), or it could be something more unexpected like an OVA.

I think July might be possible, with August being likely. I like the idea suggested above that they could have pushed the date forward not only to release P4D first, but also to bring the potential release date closer in Japan to North America's.

If the June 25th Blu-ray is some big, long video, that's probably going to be part of Persona 5's last big media push in Japan. I would imagine that would mean the release of Persona 5 would follow soon after.

Yeah you're right, demo would probably be on PSN anyway if it was coming. Might not be.

what exactly is the "social simulation" aspect of this game?
The game's pacing is like in a visual novel/dating sim, you have weeklong schedules - class in the morning during weekdays, part time jobs during the afternoon, etc - and then you play through various events, and how you tackle these determine what you can and cannot do.

In P4, say you hang out with one of your party members during the afternoon, by the time you're done it's night and you have to head home instead of exploring the dungeons. You have midterms and finals to take care of, so you have to raise your intelligence beforehand so when it's test week you'll do well, and so on, and this makes you have to plan your days beforehand because each dungeon has a deadline before whoever is stuck in them gets killed, so you have to do the social link stuff, enjoy side stuff, power up your characters and still finish off the dungeon's boss in time.

Note that Atlis USA marked PQ as an outlier with regards to localization time. P5 shouldn't take 5-6 months.

I don't see it being more than 3, myself.

what exactly is the "social simulation" aspect of this game?

The game is divided up into days and follows a calender. There are events that happen on a particular day that you can miss if you don't plan. Sometimes you have to choose between things.

Each day is divided up into day and night. During the day you go to school, come home from school and do a limited amount of things that evening. Then during the night you do a dungeon.

The day/night both progress different aspects of the games story, successes in each influence the other.

During the day you socialize with people, hang out. Build what are called social links. Different kinds of social links strengthen different classes of Personas which you use in combat.

what exactly is the "social simulation" aspect of this game?

In P3 and P4 you basically live day by day for a whole year. Not everyday is spent going to dungeons. You go to class, interact with classmates/people around town, different events go on as year goes, get a part time job, study, and you can also date people which some people happen to love.

You are supposed to try and balance the dungeon crawling with your daily life in game, doing things in your daily life helps you get stronger Personas, and money so you can be more prepared for the dungeons.

Sounds awesome. It shouldn't be too difficult to get the basic idea of the plot through context I suppose.

The target audiences may not be the same for P4D, but I don't know if I can see them overlapping so heavily on two persona-related products. I'd guess September/Oct for JP, but I'm not too sure if NA makes the 2015 release. Demand is most likely there, but we'll see.

Having a trailer finally out (given how long its taken to get to this point) is encouraging, but Hashino's "It's going to be a little while" doesn't engender a whole lot of hope for summer.

I wonder if we'll get a bit more of an info-dump in Famitsu or the like next month, or have to wait a while longer

Didn't stop P4AU and PQ from being released a month from each other, same for P4A and P4G.

I feel good about a late July release. I dunno why, it just feels right. Here's hoping it's sonner rather than later.

Maybe not heavily overlapping, but there was Persona 4 Golden and Persona 4 Arena which released only a month apart, and then there was Persona Q and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax which released a bit more than two months apart.

Atlus USA has so far been two months behind Japan releasing the trailers. We should get this one in April of the trend follows. It'll be interesting to see then if they once again reaffirm the 2015 date.

The game is in this week's Famitsu. Interview with Hashino + character/system details.

We've got an info dump on Tuesday and maybe some more talk can narrow down the release window even if we don't get a specific month or quarter.

I know the current info says 2015, but I don't think and I'm not expecting NA to get it before Feb 2016. That way I can be pleasantly surprised if it does come out this year.

I'm taking Atlus' word until they change it, since who would know better? There's also the fact they were intent on keeping the releases close and we can never really know when they've started working on the English version.

I suspect they have. I highly doubt they're actually being fed information at the same rate we are.

Did not know about the weekly Famitsu already having info, looking forward to it.

As for the overlap, anything more than a month-2 months is fine, I was initially thinking July/August, but thought I was being too charitable, hence the pushback.

If the slip happens, I don't think it'll be intentional either, but we'll have to see if Hashino spills more details.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon's also only a month - March 5 in Japan and April 9 in NA.

I wonder if P5 will be faster at assembling the full team compared to P3 and P4 which were still adding on members pretty late into the game.

Also wonder how the year will play out this time around. P3 went to 1/31 while P4 went to 12/31(?), though I hear Golden went like month and half longer, and both then skipped ahead to various days in March for their endings. Curious if we'll actually see roughly a full year this time around and go from 4/11 to 3/31 or there abouts and not skip any time. Or if they'll hold out and release that for the inevitable P5 The Golden Festival.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm gonna be honest and say that this is sort of reminding of GTA4 and Me2 (building relationships with characters, paying attention to events in the universe) although that this game focuses on that much much more. And these "social links" will most definitely affect the story yeah? And come to your advantage in the gameplay and what not?

They all effect the gameplay to varying degrees, though only a few of them have an effect on the main story(although they are all their own self contained stories).

Some Social Links affect the story in an important manner (such as unlocking an extra dungeon, having extra or different dialogue in a certain scene - for example Valentine's Day is different if you're dating everyone you possibly can than if you're dating one person or even none) and the gameplay (when you fuse a Persona it can make it instantly level a bunch, your teammates can step in and help you or take a mortal blow for you, etc. if you've ranked up the S. Link enough) and more.

Oh wow. I guess shortening delays is company-wide, not just restricted to Persona.

Depends. Again, EOIIU was released in November in Japan, but hasn't been announced for an NA release yet, and then there's DS2:RB which released in Japan in January, but doesn't have a release date for NA yet.

It's likely to do with this:
I imagine the turnaround on localization time is connected a bit to the priority of their ongoing projects as well.
Combined with the number of projects they're handling simultaneously, and any other factors like that. In any case, Persona 5 will most assuredly be a top priority concerning Atlus USA's localization efforts... one would think.

Not really they don't affect the story because you can Finish the game without starting any of them

it does come to your advantage in battles if you leveled up your party members social links.
