Garfield is out, who do you want as the Spectacular Spider-man?

Ever since I saw his role in Zodiac, I've been convinced Jake Gyllenhaal could knock Spidey out of the park. Then again he didn't exactly create a big draw for Prince of Persia, did he.

I don't have a specific actor in mind, but I would like someone who is younger and more slightly built. A bulky Spider-Man just wouldn't sit well with my conception of the character, and neither would a Spider-Man who is obviously in his late-20s or early 30s.. Other than that - and the obvious caveats about wanting someone good enough to play the role - I'm not picky.

This is why I wish Garfield was coming back. He had the perfect physique for Spider-Man, He was kinda lanky but was fit at the same time.

He doesn't need to create a draw. Spider-Man is the draw. They need someone who can be Spider-Man and not make you think, "yeah, this is just Jake Gyllenhall in red, black and blue." That's why Michael Keaton was a good Batman. He showed up and he was Batman, not Michael Keaton, unlike George Clooney who was George Clooney in a Batman suit.

If this were true then Ultimate Spider-Man wouldn't have started sliding in sales. And that was the reaction from comic book fans who knew what was going on. Imagine the confusion and disinterest when they put up a character most of the general public doesn't know about. It's pretty obvious that people care about Peter Parker. One of the main points of why he's a classic character is because of how relatable and likable Peter is.

If anything, he's one of the characters where changing the guy behind the mask would actually make a difference, because pretty much everyone knows who Peter Parker is and likes him.

The guy can do both serious roles and comedy roles very well, he has a very natural sense of comedy, he has expressed an interest in the role in the past and Marvel apparently made a few nods towards him in the comics after the previous fan campaign to get him the role. He would fit in great with the other guys in the MCU, and casting a black actor in the part would get rid of the white guy syndrome of the MCU. Apart from Panther all the black characters are purely sidekicks so far. It would also set the new Spiderman apart from the previous attempts nicely.

I agree with this. He was a better Spider-man than Maguire. His Peter Parker was completely wrong. I never got the underdog/wallflower from him. I didn't care for Maguire either. Far too much in the other direction. Neither delivered a Spider-man that I could relate to, which is kind of sad because that's what Spider-man was all about.

With the demystifying of nerd culture and geekdom in general I really can't see a classic take on Peter Parker working anymore. Garfield came off like a hipster. McGuire felt like a throwback. I've never read the Miles Morales stuff but I can see that character having modern day crunch that would be the equivalent to the outsider, nerd Parker way back in the sixties.

Regardless, there will have to be a new story formula for the next one, the whole work/life balance coupled with a tragic villain angle has truly been run into the ground.

As to casting. An unknown.

He's proven he can disappear into a role, so that's not an issue.
 
If they go young Peter I like Logan lerman, miles teller, or the guy from kingsman. Definitely important that they can pull of the spidey character well, and I feel like all three of those choices could
 
Someone who can act the hell out of the part, first and foremost. Black, white, whatever, are they perfect? Go get 'em.

I don't know why you're bringing in comics when it's a much smaller form of media appealing to a comparatively very specific and niche audience. They care about details like this; I don't think the general audience does as much. Peter Parker, as a character, isn't as indelible as, say, Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne. Peter came to prominence in the general public's eye a little more than a decade ago, while Batman and Superman's alter egos have been a part of popular culture for over 50 years.

I didn't say that Peter was an uninteresting or unlikable character, either, but I think he can be replaced. There would be an issue among NeoGAF and other internet message boards but I don't think it would be near as big of a blowback for everyone else.
