Project Scissors: NightCry (Clock Tower Spiritual Successor) PC Kickstarter ($300k)

At least they have gameplay. Unsung whatever made 660k and didn't show any in-game content.

And this is by an established team of survival horror devs, at that.

Yes, but still. They messed up. I hope they come up with an angel investor because I think this Kickstarter will indeed fail. I hope that they learn a lesson from this. You have to show us something impressive and in a timely fashion. We have already bypassed the "golden age" of Kickstarter when tons of projects were getting funding.

The problem is that Unsung was launched at a time when Kickstarter users weren't as burned as they are now. The funders are a lot more discerning than they were back then, due to funded but failed projects.

25K jump yesterday, pretty impressive. At $140,585 now

I think it's more that horror games are more niche than JRPGs.

Yeah, as a comparison, most successful horror games (ie funded and recieved the most money) on Kickstarter afaik are:
1. Pathologic $333,127 ($250,000 goal)
2. Among the Sleep $248,358 ($200,000 goal)
3. Neverending Nightmares $106,722 ($99,000 goal)

Of course, hard to compare since each kickstarter is its own unique situation.

Looks like they've added ps4\xbox one stretch goals

Indeed, a full-out update posted as well that covers some of the progress made on the game proper. A few videos worth a peek there!

Hey horror fans!

Takashi Shimizu was recently in the Nude Maker offices to help tune the horror aspects of the game, and decided to try out the game in its current state to see how it’s been coming along. The results were quietly caught on tape by our ninjas, for your viewing pleasure.

Kono-san probably could have helped a little more, but what would be the fun in that?

Hair Physics Sneak Peek

We’ve been talking about improved effects for the PC version of NightCry, and with characters like Monica sporting long flowing hair, you can imagine that we wanted to make sure hair physics work properly for our characters as they explore the cruise ship.

We bring you: our very first hair physics test!

The tech is obviously not final, and you’ll notice that it’s not yet perfect, but it’s an exciting first step for us. We’re pumped to show you the progress we’ve made, and we can’t wait to show you more.

And now, a word from Director Hifumi Kono!

Hello, I'm Hifumi Kono.

Today, I'd like to share our newest character model that just got delivered! She's being set up as we speak. Can you guess who this character is?

zlNNWIT.jpg

That's right, it's Monica, as many of you may have guessed. We recommended a nice hair salon and a beauty salon. It looks like her hair is silkier than ever, and her facial features as well as her figure seems to have improved too!

We are working hard daily to improve the quality of NightCry to a level that our fans are expecting. We have not yet replaced the character model in our newest gameplay trailer, we are confident that you will notice a difference in the clothing material and post effects.

We'll be showcasing the newly reborn Monica in the days to come, so please look forward to seeing her in action!

Extended Gameplay

Along with the previous two videos, we’re adding one more to the mix in this blowout update with an extended gameplay video of the early part of NightCry, narrated by Playism's own Douglas Watt!

How will you ever escape the ever-present Scissorwalker? This video might offer some tips!

After the strenuous work editing the extended gameplay video, Nude Maker's intrepid manager, Ayumu Miura, decided to take a nap.

Console Stretch Goals

Lastly: you shouted, we listened. We’re finally unveiling our console stretch goals for the NightCry Kickstarter!

Behold!

QLK2GW6.jpg

That’s right! After careful consideration and balancing the books, we’ve been able to bring the initial stretch goals down to a more reasonable number, and we’re introducing PS4 and Xbox One stretch goal as well!

That's all for now, but what an update, huh? Don't worry! There 's more to come@

I hope that at least bumps interest a little. No chance of making the stretch goals, but I'll take any momentum at this point.

Oh wow, I didn't know horror games were so much more niche than JRPGs. I always thought it was the other way around. Shows what I know, I guess!

New update looks rough (what the fuck is going on with that mouse cursor?), but ultimately I think I really like the gameplay loop they are going for with this one. The new hair physics look like a nice improvement as well.

As for stretch goals, yeah, probably not happening, but still I really hope it gets more people to back this. I just don't get how you take Silent Hill, Clock Tower and The Grudge devs/visionaries, and somehow don't get a game on the other end.

Oh, but Molyneux? Yeah, fund ALL his trash.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=991799

I made a new thread for the new gameplay video.

Holy fuck Ito is in this? Godlike.

I want Ito on Silent Hills so bad hngh

This is why we should have a thread title edit, though it'll be hard to stuff everything into the title character limit. Maybe something like...

Project Scissors: NightCry (Clock Tower/Silent Hill/Ju-on creatives) PC Kickstarter

It's suffering from some serious messaging issues, on top of Horror just being a tough sell in general. I couldn't even get Fungo to toss out a shoutout to the kickstarter during the Guy Cihi stream, and he had over a thousand fans sitting watching! :(

To be honest I was already kind of trying that with that new gameplay thread.

Backed, doesn't look good, though. Way too many kickstarters this month. I want to get in on Shadowrun and Children of Morta, will have to pull some money off from Starr Mazer for that.

For a while I thought this didn't have any chance, but with 6 days to go and being over halfway there a really amazing final push could work.

We're talking seriously amazing though, almost on the level of the all-the-press-rally-behind-it that happened for the Republique crap.

With a game like this, it makes me wonder where the Japanese gaming community is exactly. Or perhaps Kickstarter isn't available in Japan yet?

I don't think Japanese gamers care enough about PC gaming to support this. The game is releasing on iOS/Android/Vita regardless of the Kickstarter so they'll get to play it anyway.

Republique had a lot of support from the media in the last days, the media basically turned his back on this game.

It will be amazing though, with a proper demo on a famous streamer/youtuber it could happen, but the demo they released earlier is clearly not ready for that purpose...

To get that kind of backing, they really need to have support from the games media and have a livestream or something going to hype people up.

Yes, that's probably the main issue with funding is that we're getting the game regardless of success. With Vita and iOS&android devices being supported, just about anyone can play it anyway.

I wonder if offering physical Vita copies would have helped?

IMO the problem with that is that it's clear the big screen version is what they actually wanted to make and would be obviously a much better version of the game.

Should have hired Ryan Payton to do their PR and have the press contacts to get the word out in a massive way.

The kickstarter is at $178,891 now, nothing's over yet.

Japanese have their own kickstarter : http://camp-fire.jp/ and Project Scissors is there : http://camp-fire.jp/projects/view/1443 They're only asking for less than $30.000 and are only at 65% so yeah, Japanese gamers don't care much.

Eh, Japan is only one country and the regular kickstarter is worldwide. Their campfire campaign is at 2,234,500 yen now (74%) with 11 days left, so that'll very, very like make it.

It's probably true that PC gaming isn't that big in Japan (outside of certain niche genres) but I think the issue is probably more that the whole crowdfunded games /kickstarter thing hasn't really taken off there (yet). To be fair those two things are probably somewhat linked given that most of the kickstarter stuff is targetting PC / PC gamers first. Then there's also the language barrier.

Not too shabby. They're making some headway. Hopefully here's a huge jump in the final two days when Reminders go out.

They made like 50K today already!

They have at least 7 people who pledged 10K each now. Either that or Notch is a big clock tower fan. ;)

It's rare for a project that's over 70% of the way there to not get funded, so I'm not super worried. This looks like it should make it with a strong final push.

Does anyone else find the pledge activity for the last few days highly suspicious? I've never seen a campaign where in the last week, only a small handful of new backers emerge and they all select very expensive pledge tiers. Indeed, the lower level tiers and the number of total backers has barely moved at all in the past week, but mysteriously, tens of thousands of dollars are appearing in the past few days. I was an early backer, but I'm considering pulling my pledge as I suspect there is something shady going on here perhaps in an effort to save face or collect at least part of the money. I mean they have $132K (more than half the total pledged to date) in pledges from just 26 backers. Does anyone have a reasonable explanation for how something like this would happen on a relatively niche project?

I think it's going to be more difficult now that the big rewards are gone...

They will have to reach a lot of people in the last few days... which they haven't been really good at doing so far.

Really hoping for this to happen though :
Hopefully here's a huge jump in the final two days when Reminders go out.

Normally, I'd agree with you and say this sort of behavior is shady. However there are a lot of big names behind this project. It's not at all unreasonable to think that in the final week, some of their friends at other studios would decide to make large contributions, especially when they saw how the KS was struggling.

It's unusual, but they do have endorsements by pretty much every big Japanese developer. There's generally not much point in putting money into your own campaign, because you'll be in more trouble than it's worth if you get found out, and ultimately you still have to deliver. It's also a project with a ton of developer pedigree.

I'd be more worried about someone trolling them with fake pledges, but most likely it's like Robert says, and it's just other devs throwing them a bone.

There is no way to know.

Remember companies themselves can pledge huge sums.

They even have support from Mikami.

honestly I don't care as long as it gets kickstarted.

holy shit we're so close.

Imagine if Nintendo pledge the balance at the last day, with a message from Iwata, don't forget the WiiU or Sony just to use it as a promo when it launches in Vita.

Looks like they've added ps4\xbox one stretch goals

Good move, but I think they should've made the KS for PC and console versions to begin with really. Not sure what level of plausibility that has, but would've helped get attention a lot more, I wager.

Wow, yeah, the other day I was really concerned about this not making its goal, but somehow it got a HUGE push somewhere. Less than 90k needed, and 5 days left, I'm nearly certain this will make it.

Thank God, too, because I really want to play it eventually :)

I really hope it makes it otherwise I will still play the Vita version, but a PS4 version would be cool. The graphics and animations will also improve as it gets further in development. The bad guy looks really creepy too.
