Shame about Sol Trader - can't see it getting 12k(ish) in a day and a bit. Looks like a decent concept.

A few others out there doing similar things though

Even though it's been pointed out in a previously, I wanted to give a little bit of love to Orion Trail since a few buddies of mine Dave and Evan (from Pittsburgh no less!) are behind it. They're a bit behind because of their higher initial ask, but in an age of unrealistic Kickstarter budgets I think what they're asking for is more than reasonable for a team of 2-3 guys over basically an year of development.

They're also doing some cool crossovers with Moonman and Starr Mazer (who isn't?).

They have a playable alpha up right now: http://oriontrail.schellgames.com/

I backed 'em. Definitely an interesting project.

Oh cool, you're working on something new? Or a second attempt for Gun World?

Something new. GunWorld is actually already done, released, and on Steam. I'm hoping the fact that we finished a game that failed on Kickstarter due to us having no reputation at all will help provide some sort of proof that we're capable of completing a project if it is funded.

Congrats then! I hadn't realized it had been finished and released. Hope you have a better turnout with your upcoming campaign. What's your new project?

Thanks! It's called Glitch Warrior. We're launching the Greenlight page and updating our website with a trailer tomorrow.

It's another 8-bit inspired side scroller, an effort to improve upon everything we learned from doing GunWorld. The twist on it is that you play as a defective robot who is so unstable he can glitch out the world and everything else around him.

The game operates entirely on these artificial memory banks that store values in them. Everything in the game is spawned based on these values, and the player has the ability to manipulate them at any time, effectively giving them powers that "glitch" the game to act in unintended ways.

A prime example is that you have a sub-weapon slot like in Castlevania. You can swap out the variable that houses your sub-weapon for the variable in another memory bank causing literally any in-game object to end up in your inventory. You can then spawn blocks, HUD elements, enemies, and even duplicates of yourself.

We're trying to make a fun and challenging sidescroller that is also a sandbox to experiment in.

That sounds great. I love games where you can play around with the environment and mechanics.

Have you seen Nitrome's ChangeType(). It's as platformer where you could hack the environment and change the behavior of level tiles (i.e. make spikes act like blocks so you can safely walk across them or blocks like clouds so you can pass through platforms)

What's the KS date? I'll add it to the Upcoming section

I haven't played that, sounds up my alley though. I just bookmarked it to try later this afternoon.

We're planning to launch the KS on February 23rd.

Thanks for the info

My concern is that people see "8-bit" nowadays and kind of gloss over it due to the notion that it's an oversaturated style. I wonder if that affected Gun World's visibility more than anything else. Hopefully the concept of Glitch Warrior attracts more attention

I have the same concerns. Unfortunately I'm dumb enough to still spearhead a project simply because I love the style even though I know it's something difficult to market right now.

I knew from the start if I wanted to do something retro again it needed to be really different, and this sandbox approach was what I came up with. It was really inspired by speed runners and watching how some of them manipulate the way the game works to do unintended things.

It's funny. My first console was a PSX and I never played anything with pixel art till I was in elementary school, so like ten years ago. So to me there's no nostaglia factor, it doesn't feel retro or outdated. My retro is Resident Evil 2 and Spryo. I guess thay's why pixel art doesn't bother me

Speedrunning platformer + sandbox approach sounds really cool. Definitely looking forward to seeing gameplay

The gameplay is very Mega Man X Castlevania. I grew up on the NES so, like many other indie devs my age, these sorts of games are the kind of thing I'm really inspired to make. If it doesn't work this time I know to try something else =). Steel Assault made it through, but that has a very technical and late-NES look to it. Glitch Runner looks a lot like Mega Man, we wanted that inspiration to be very clear.

OMg i should not have come in here... some of these games look amazing!!

Orion Trail visuals are killing me in my nostalgia bone!

Edit: After playing the demo, sigh... what a disappointment. I'm not sure what i was expecting, but i was thinking the game would have been more than, ask me questions for 5 minutes then Game over. I guess i was just expecting alittle bit more interactions.
That said the visuals are to die for.

In light of the recent Godus debacle and news of some more Kickstarted games coming to Early Access soon, I decided to add another section to the OP. News | Releases | Updates will be for post-campaign Kickstarter news, like abandoned projects and release dates. I'll be adding to it shortly

So Starr Mazer seems to have reached its goal. They have been really good on their KS campaign, personally I've not seen many projects that have had as many interesting updates and streams.
