The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Breakables are pretty standard game stuff... Chairs, bottles etc. Sometimes a little more than in some games but definitely not "amazing". You can inspect certain objects as seen in that Sackboy GIF. When not shooting stuff, the "aim" button (L2) is a zoom / inspect button so if you enjoy looking at details, you're still in for a treat.

Awesome! I love when devs go out of their way with the tiny details. Really looking forward to this, could care less about length. I'll take a 5 hour solid experience over a dragged out one.

So I have been playing this games for seven hours. It think i am on chapter 12 or 13 so here are my impressions

+ game is beautiful . Best looking game on any platform including pc. Not only it looks good it feels grounded and art matches the technical excellence. I cant describe why but it has CG feeling to it. It reminds me of concept CGI videos some times. Animation is also terrific.

+ Voice acting and music is great. Music is really haunting and unique. Guns also sound very punchy

+ Game play is also good. Sir Galahad moves much faster than i expected but the guns feel much heavier than Uncharted etc. Also guns pack quite a punch. Cover is assigned to a but but there is also soft cover when you get close to it. it takes some time getting used to tough

+ Pacing is good

+ Characters and their interaction feels very natural and all of them feel grounded .

+ did i mention how beautiful this game is

= playing on hard some times AI feels great other times very stupid. don't know why so i am neutral on this aspect. when it works its great when not then you know.

- QTE melee. i don't generally hate qte and they are quite punchy but you lose this sense of controlling character. like camera angle changes and it feels very disjointed

- start of the game is very slow. like really really slow

- Lore surrounding the game is great and without mentioning any spoiler ill just say that story is just ok. much better than many other games but i was expecting some thing more or different. any how this is personal preference so wont go into details

- Transitions from game play to cut scene are not as seamless as i hoped for a game with no prerendered cut scenes

Over all i am enjoying it a lot. it gives me feeling of playing RE or Maxpayne for the first time.

If you like cinematic shooter without too much other craps to do then this is game for you . if you are a guy which perfers open areas and wild wilderness to explore with xp leveling etc then don't even bother .

My rating uptill now Tombraider Out of Uncharted 2

Played up until Chapter 9 last night. Some quick impressions:

-Graphics are absolutely incredible. Audio is in the same ballpark as well, lots of detail can be heard in sound effects and voice recordings. The acting is really well done.

-The game is as linear as you can get. Literally point A to point B. No side hallways to explore, no extra rooms/areas to go in. Disappointed in how linear it is, especially given how incredible the environments are. Seeing more of them at my leisure would've been a blast.

-Environments are exquisitely detailed. The whole "vibe" of the world comes through really well. Art direction second to none.

-Shooting parts are fun and control well but they are few and far between and are often far too short to get any sort of extended satisfaction from them. There are some weapons I've only seen/used once so far, there are not enough opportunities to get familiar with the arsenal in the game.

-Shooting feels really good. Enemy feedback when shot is great. Gun sounds are visceral and sharp.

-The game takes control away from you far too often. There are long stretches where you are pushing forward on the left stick for about 10 seconds before the game takes control away from you, and it happens repeatedly. It's super annoying. LOTS of forced walking segments, lots of QTE's. It can actually get a bit boring to play during these segments.

I have some videos of my personal playthrough if you want to see me play through some of it.

Any questions I'll be glad to answer.

Thanks. One quick question, are forced walking segments more predominant on early chapters, or is it throughout the whole game? I actually love forced walking segments, but I don't think I'll appreciate if it's extremely overdone.

This....is....awesome....

Never been on game trailers but then that doesn't stop you guys and loving that rapier can quote my posts but not the posts I replied to.
That's similar to this game probably in that there was maybe a longer story with more gameplay at some point but they cut it all to get it out there or maybe keep some of the ideas for a sequel.
To be honest a permanent ban would be welcome, I could do with a trip elsewhere.

...ok?

This is a strange question perhaps, but knowing what you know now, would you buy the game again? Or if you had known what you now know, would you wait for it to drop in price?

I dont know about him but i love love linear games with good story. This title is has good gameplay and very beautiful graphics and ok story. I don't play multiplayer much so this was a perfect title for me. And i would buy this in a heart beat if i have to buy again.

Am i dissapointed yes certainly. Am i having fun yes tons of fun

I think the camera switch is taking some of the immersion out of the game, totally unnecessary for melee and door opening, the small stuff that shouldn't interrupt gameplay and player control, not sure why they do that. Good to see you are having fun.

The camera cuts and angles are to make it feel "like a movie". It's clear that rubs some people the wrong way, though.

The beginning is heavy with them. But they're still scattered throughout the rest of the game as far as I can tell.

Well I already got the game 20$ off so I didn't pay full price for the game. But there's probably no harm in waiting a bit for a price drop. Especially given how fast games this gen come down in price or go on sale so soon after release.

Excellent! Thanks for the answer!

Exactly . This is the biggest issue and immersion breaking for me. its like Maxpayne all over again. why not do a seamless transition like TLOU or MGS 4 , GZ etc

Are the black bars irritating anyone?

Not me. Gives a really great cinematic feel, I played The Evil Within and felt that it was like a demo for how The Order would feel with the black bars.

Gameplay is fun, combat seems fluid and never out of a movie scene.

Lighting is pretty great, indoors the game looks superb. Outdoors has some of the flaws (graphically speaking).

Yeah, I've had Galahad do a few wibble-wobbles because I wasn't in the right place for the cinematic to take over.

I would hyphen that movie and say "modern american styled action movie." Honkong, japanese films, or older films had continuous camera angles and very rarely suddent takes even in action.

IGN: "how we love the orders length"

Never Mind the ads around the site, the order is the perfect length and girth to give you maximum revenue.

Well, these kind of stuff are design choices. Not one I agree with, (prefer seamless), but it's not like they couldn't do seamless, they clearly made a different decision.

Why were people throwing around the campaign being 5 hours? I'm six hours into it and from the looks of things I have some more to go. I'll finish it by tonight and will write my overall impressions of the game. So far I love it. It's not mind blowing but the game has continually surprised me visually and I love the story and world. I have a feeling critics are going to be harsher on it than it deserves.

Because people foolishly believed that a sample size of one (maybe two) was definitive proof of the game's length. We won't know an average length until we have quite a few more impressions.

I think one of only a few off things I've noticed, graphics wise, with this game would be that the hair and character models aren't as finely detailed up close as some other releases. I'm the kind of person that tries to get a character practically in the camera though, lol.

Looks great in motion in general, especially when light is bouncing off of it.

I could spend 4-5 hours just looking at things in games like this.

I know this is personal and only a pet peeve of mine, but not being able to check how many colllectibles are in each chapter does kinda bother me.

Especially since all I'm missing is a single collectible.

That is indeed kinda annoying. Is there at least a menu that shows you what you have so you can deduce out what's missing?

There is an archive that lets you check the phonograms, but not the rest. And, of course, what I am missing is an inspectable object which could be anywhere :p

Which to be fair, is why we need a large sample so we can get a solid average that's not overly influenced by people who take forever to finish a game or by people who truly speed through their games. I look forward to seeing the average for this game after a few hundred people report their time on something like HLTB.

DANG, that is kinda annoying :P

Wait. Really? How would that work?

That's kind of silly.

As far as the PS4 is concerned, it's showing a 1080 image on your screen including the black bars, even though the game itself is rendered at a different aspect ratio. The black bars are indeed part of the game and not something added by your display due to a ratio discrepancy.

Since there's no setting in the PS4 to output to 21:9, I have no idea how an image would display on that. Maybe it would just get stretched really oddly?

It's still very impressive to see it in motion when the wind blows through it (and even the NPCs clothes)coupled with the amazing lighting...

After seeing many complaints about the length, it makes me wonder how Squaresofts PS2 game "The Bouncer" would fare in today's gaming climate. It got alot of flak for being as short as it was (1 hour and half to beat, probably 5 hours to complete everything total in the game), and the game focused alot on it's cinematic aspect. I actually really enjoyed the game and while it has a 66 on metacritic, I remember alot of reviews enjoying the game back then (or at least EGM since that was my main source of gaming info back in the day) Just thinking about The Order and the current complaints about the length brought back alot of memories of The Bouncer rushing back to me lol. Probably random and maybe off topic, but just a thought on my mind.

I don't know how to interpret that...

Which Tombraider game are we talking about here?

As long as it's not Angel of Darkness, we good! lol.

New Tomb Raider was a pretty fun game from what I've played so far (didn't get all that far yet), don't understand some of the hate that I've seen it get honestly.

NPCs are greatly detailed as well but not as great as the main characters and at some moments you would see and feel the difference and it may look like out of scene....
