Your Favorite TCG Cards

Back when I started playing again this guy was at the heart of my first deck and I've had a soft spot for him ever since:

To be fair, Griselbrand doesn't see much tournament play, and when he does, it's always in a reanimator context. It is banned in Commander, but that is a casual format where you can be guaranteed to have that "in your hand".
Sees play as a 4-of in Sneak and Show (A deck based around cheating creatures into play with Show and Tell and Sneak Attack) and is hideously broken there.

These days, Cardfight!! Vanguard is my focus for all things TCG. Some of the art is absolutely incredible, especially since the different clans within the game carry certain themes not only in abilities, but art and lore. Some of my favorite are is as follows:

I honestly could go on and on, but I won't for the sake of those browsing this thread. Of course, I have other favorites from other card games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon (and even some of Future Card Buddyfight's upcoming Hero World cards, though I don't play the game).

ITT:Nobody plays Vanguard.

I do! I've played it since 2012. I wish there was an OT for it, since the only communities I know of are either on Pojo, the CFV Wiki, or my local's group.

I never played it but wish the 3DS games were released here

If you wanted a way to get started, you could always try Cardfight Area. It's not the best program in the world, but it's practically the only option available and it won't cost you anything.

I have to say, I think the Monarch meta was my favorite one. The best example of Tribute monsters done right.

My favorite card has to be:

So simple, yet so overbearing of an effect.

I've had interest in Cardfight Vanguard before, but the numerous wide-eyed shiny-skinned anime girls really turned me off.

But after seeing the card-art in your post, you've piqued my interest again.

Haven't played MTG in a couple of years, but always loved Fact or Fiction, it encourages interaction and basically gauges how well your opponent understands your position in game. Of course, it also tells your opponent the cards you are drawing into your hand to make the game more interesting.

Netrunner also deserves some love for being the TCG with cards that's easiest for any people relate to with a modern/cyber-noir setting.

Playing this card means basically you're spending your whole turn doing nothing but gaining money, and what better activity to represent that than having a Day Job. The art and the flavor text is just perfect.

Of course the mega corporation can attempt to win the game by burning down your house to kill you once they find out where you are. And of course they don't get repercussions because technically they own the place.

There's a lot more cards that's really flavorful. But the whole game is pretty much like that. You need to have money to make more money, drawing cards is equivalent to getting an energy drink, and doing drugs give you long term brain damage in return for short term advantage, stealing money from a corporation is great but in return you get and risk nasty stuffs happening to you, etc.

You'll get that here and there. The card you posted comes from the Bermuda Triangle clan, which are all pop idol mermaids, so you won't see much outside of that. A clan like Shadow Paladins, for example, can have cards which look like this:

and cards which look like this (which comes from their "Witch" sub-clan)

Before I got into the game, I had just gotten out of playing MtG after about 7 years and didn't think I was going to pick up another one. However, it was actually this guy right here, which my friend showed me, which caused me to want to play the game before I knew how to play or what exactly that clan did.

My general advice to getting into Vanguard is first find a clan which you think looks cool and then see if the clan's playstyle works for you. Also, feel free to ask about anything.

This guy grew up too ;)
Yeah, I know about the mega monarchs. Never really liked them, as they felt like the antithesis of monarchs. 2-tribute monsters that are less cost efficient than their counterparts. Especially with how easy it is to Xyz summon.

Definitely curious about learning more regarding Vanguard.

Mega monarch are 1 tribute in a monarch deck, and they completely shut down extra deck summons as a cost for some epic op ness.

However, if you only like to include them in non monarch decks, I agree with you completely.

Fuck, seeing all these cards and games makes me wish there were more full fledged digital TCGs.

It also makes me pissed that Hex is going nowhere.

Yugioh flavour text is so... bland.

"A ferocious dragon with a deadly attack."
"The ultimate wizard in terms of attack and defense." lmao

I guess they had the anime to build the world with, and it looked cool, but still. You just activated my trap card still gets me.

Netrunner is easily the best alternative to Magic going right now, and the art direction of the cards is great.

Not only does the artwork and card functions fit thematically into a neat little cyberpunk world (it's not as abstract as other card games), but they actually take care to vary all the characters up in gender, race, and ethnicity. I love that they boldly pull that off without any fuss.

First Netrunner post I think! Out of any of the games that have reased in the past 8 years, this is the one that is incredibly interesting to me. I also love that card art, it reminds me of one of the characters from Wicked & The Divine. Gotta give them props for making a female character who you feel like you could run into on the streets. She looks incredibly human and that's a great thing.

Edit:

Vanguard reminds me of Duel Masters. How far off am I with that comparison?

Misty's Wish

Whilst I really like the Gym Block of Pokemon TCG for it's art (they really did a good job incorporating the leaders' styles in the art (sometimes too well, see Misty's Tears and Koga's Ninja Trick) I like Misty's Wish for it's simplisity and, darnit, Ken Sugimori can do cute inspite of the blocky 80's anime style he has

Alternatively I'd say Misty's Tears (JP Version) because of the style thing but I'm not comfortable posting that on 'gaf, nude is nude, artistic or no.

I'm also a fan of comedic shit in TCGs but that's usually exclusive to flavor text

I strongly recommend you try it. There's a thread for it in OT community

Really glad to see Magi Nation, Duel Masters, Hecatomb in here. I've played so many card games in my time and I'd really like to pick up a new one, but there doesn't seem to be anything on the market that REALLY interests me.

I'm a big fan of the theme and art of The Spoils:

EOTFOFYL summed up why Fact or Fiction didn't encourage much beyond the casting player winning.

I ran UW control during its heyday and the very best opponent making the right play still left you hilariously ahead of where you were precasting. God forbid you get to dump some Accumulated Knowledge or a Nether Spirit into the yard.

What is it that you'd want from a new card game at this point in your life?

Gorgeous art, a friendly packaging model (LCG or the like), unique mechanics, and in depth gameplay with strong deck building. It doesn't even need a big community, I just want to play with my like minded buddies and obsess over new cards and combos.

Have you looked at Netrunner? Not trying to sound like a salesman, it's just the one card game that really blew my mind with how solid and unique it is (and the LCG model helps, too). It's actually designed by the same guy who designed Magic, so it actually feels like something different.

Apart from that, there's also Seasons, which is actually packaged more like a board game and is easy to pick up, and the art is excellent; another really cool game.

I really want to get into Netrunner, I just have to learn the damn rules and strategy. The default rulebook is kind of awful

Definitely. Fantasy Flight Rulebooks are notoriously lacking, across their entire line of games. They're okay as a reference, but it's really bad as a learning tool.

The Netrunner rules and game design are very solid and jank-free, though, and it's pretty simple to follow once you got it. There are tutorial videos online that explain the game better than the rulebook does.

Oh, oh. You reminded me of this guy:

Wanted this guy so badly when he was spoiled. I think I opened 1 and traded for another 2, while my buddy opened 4 out of sheer luck - 1 foil. Was so jealous.

I wonder if anybody else even remembers this old, Shadowrun CCG...

Oddly enough, two of my favorite spell cards in M:tG are creature removal and destruction spells. Final Judgement in particular is one of the first cards I had when I first learned to play the game and was devastating against most of our local player group since our decks weren't anything to write home about (it helped that Blue was an uncommon color in our area, too!).

Now I just wish they would return to Kamigawa. If they did, I might not be able to resist the impulse to play for that block.

I actually have the core set for Netrunner and I've tried playing it a few times, but it just doesn't click, I'm not sure if it's the terrible rulebook, or the fact that the setting and theme isn't very inspiring to us.

As for Seasons... while it looks pretty cool and I might have to pick it up, it also doesn't seem to have deck building which is one of my favorite parts of TCGs.

Maybe there just isn't a current game for me.

Like OP I've been out of the TCG scene for years now.
I recently stumbled upon a new game called Force of Will.

Straight out of Japan, the game is fresh from this year in Canada and contain only 5 sets that are valid in tournament at the moment.
Every set is around 100 cards.
The arts are totally great and vary in style from anime to wtv...
The theme and lore behind all the set ATM are mainly fairy tales and Grimm stories which really appeals to me. They did found a way to mix in Japanese classic in there.
Preview:

Anyhow I won't go over all the rules but the basics are like MTG expect that your lands(mana) are in a separate deck which makes the mana flood issue non-existent.
Also, every deck has a ruler that you can either tap to search for a mana stone in your stone deck (lands), play his abilities or J-activate so it can become a creature to fight along side the others (Permanent).

I won't go in depth with all the rules but the scene is growing in my city (Montréal) and if you are interested it really is a fun game to play.
I already converted 2 magic the gathering veterans to it. haha

I am curious if any gaffer are playing this.

I've played it a little but I don't know of anybody at the LGS who also does so it's mostly just me and my friend fucking around with the starter deck.

That's a shame.
By starter do you mean the Engage Knight Box?
That's what I started with but I wasn't too thrilled. Then I bought some boxes and build my own stuff... the starters are way too basic.

It's a shame the community is so small... :(

There's also the problem that I primarily play MTG for limited, and while FOW does have booster draft it's an even more unpopular format for a niche game.

After an opponent spends massive time and effort to set up a conflict, 2 alliances tap and commit million fleets and characters, diplomatic lines shift, friendships break, and the conflict is finally about to resolve by 1 point, Kosh drives by in his spaceship and ruins everything.

So true, specially when you draft and you don't get a ruler so you are stuck with the ''Draft'' Ruler...
Makes it not so great.
Still hoping the game will take some expansion.

Delightfully OP and many-a-game winner, I will always remember this card fondly.

What a card, it changed the entire metagame. Too bad the game at that point was dying so his effect wasn't as big as it was in Japan.

Amazing choices.
