Games that show core-system features on their UI (clock, battery, etc)

Thread really serves no purpose other than to list games that do these kinda things, where a game adds a very basic visual thing that feels like the console should soport in every game, in a way

obviously the first thing that comes to mind are Sakurai 3DS games:

cant find a screen of KI: Uprising but it has that same bottom bar on multiplayer

I guess some other games do UI specific stuff when you're running out of battery on your controller. Mostly nintendo games.

Anyway, it's an odd thing. I feel like there should be a standard-on-top-of-game UI option to show this stuff in every single game, so it always grabs my attention.

any more?

I like it. I hope Civ6 shows your computer time in the info bar without needing a mod. I don't know how much it would help in stopping me from playing for hours without noticing, but it might help.

Honestly I think it's really useful on handhelds and tablets, allows them to incorporate system features without an ugly non-thematic top bar. Would rather have this information than break immersion, which imo isn't important on a handheld anyway.

Not always.

oh, yeah, great example. This is the kind of stuff im talking about, when it's mostly seamlessly integrated into the game's very specific UI

I wouldnt mind a sakurai style bar for every game if it's a toggle.

Some notable ones for me (obviously)

Pokémon Black / White showed time, battery life (2 bars if on DS / DS Lite, 3 bars on DSi / 3DS), and indicators if there's anyone nearby. This was all periphery when using the C-Gear to access various other features including Battle/Trades, Game Sync and Holo Caster.

Pokémon Black 2 / White 2 kept this

Pokémon X & Y mostly removed it, but has an online indicator that also connects and shows your friends that are online. This remains in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire

Star Fox 64 3D also had the time and battery indicator, I definitely thought it was helpful. I'm actually a fan of having some info like that to fill in the empty space, especially when it's useful.

The purpose of the watch in Metro/Last Light Redux is to measure filter time with the red hand but it actually displays the correct system time too.

I'm pretty sure that the Devil Survivor games show the console's battery life in the game's UI which makes sense considering that the characters are using DS lookalikes and the UI design already reflects this.

I can't remember if Atlus' other games do the same thing.

In Curse of Monkey Island, the clock tower of Plunder Island fort showed the system time (it can also be read out loud by your protagonist). Not actually some useful feature since it is only available at one location, but I thought it belongs here as a part of "real-time clock in games" discussion.

This goes beyond UI, but games like Metropolis Street Racer on Dreamcast used the system clock to determine the time of day on the various tracks worldwide, adjusted for time zones.

Never played this game but does the scene get dark at night time?

This is something WoW does too. Didn't pokemon do something similar also?

X-Scape on DSiWare has a nice little spot on the bottom showing the clock, battery, and... volume. (I guess that made a little more sense when it was controlled using buttons on the DSi rather than a slider.)

I like these since it stops me from having to stop completely to check on certain things but I prefer it when its done like in the post above of Star Fox 3D and Metroid Prime where they match the UI style and not just a different looking bar like smash.

It's an immersion breaker to me.
No, this fucking arse wankery is immersion breaking:

More reason to dislike Skyward Sword and why Fi is just that bit more of a terrible character.

Hell yes. I love the C-gear.

Holy shit at that Metroid example! I had no clue and I consider myself a Metroid fan. I feel ashamed.

The implementation in Skyward Sword is a terrible example.

Super Smash Bros. Melee, it even counts the times you turned on the GameCube even if was not with the SSBM disc

adds play time to Smash and play time to the system itself without smash.

I thought the Home button didn't work when playing Smash or something like that. Can you even press Home while playing Smash to check your battery life? People have mentioned that Smash boots into a special low resource mode.

The in-battle clock in the Gen 5 pokemon games is a lot more useful than you'd expect.
So naturally, gen 6 gets rid of it.

You can but it grinds to a screaming halt as the system tries to load things back into RAM. It churns for probably a good 10-15 seconds on an old 3DS.

Not always.

So that's cute, but unless the game points that out, it's worthless. There's no way you'd guess what it was normally.

I don't mind battery meters and stuff in games but it starts to feel cheap if it's not integrated well. DS games love to do this, but it reminds me of a mobile game at some point.

You can make the home screen come up, but the things that don't normally close the game don't work, and the things that do cause the system to reboot first.
