Legend of Zelda Wii U Gameplay Demo

Looking back at the early Twilight Princess trailers, do you guys think something we've seen in Zelda U that will be completely overhauled like in those trailers? It looks nothing like what it does now.

serious? they just showed it a few month ago how is it going to be overhauled
TP had a long time between early trailer and near release trailers

It would be hilarious if at E3 they showed linear segmented parts of the overworld, stating that the Wii U is just not powerful enough to sustain a seamless open-ended overworld.

"We never promised anything different lol."

"Oh and guess who's back? Fi 2.0"

"We've partnered with Ubisoft for the development on this new game. We now have massive downgrades, radio towers and mobile-app only chests you can find plus you can buy rupees with real world cash and you can only use Miiverse if you sign into uPlay."

That's pretty much a given. That's how game dev works. Things are constantly changing, shifting, switching, etc.

That was a big Nintendo-heavy event where it would stand out. Not a random event for developers that is not an event for PR/media coverage like GDC. E3 will be it.

Twilight Princess was at GDC 2005/2006. Phantom Hourglass at GDC 2007. Spirit Tracks at GDC 2009. Skyward Sword at GDC 2011.

I honestly miss the old days of Nintendo megaton reveals. The Twilight Princess reveal was the best. Hell, I just miss their live shoes and hype. Directs are great, don't get me wrong, but they miss that special impact sometimes.

I'll always have that burning hope inside that they'll announce a new Prime, F-ZERO and show more Zelda footage...

Maybe. But I feel what they've shown us so far is, in the grand scheme of things, of very little substance. At least in terms of what could be changed drastically. I feel a lot of what they've shown is almost like an unfinished testbed. Rewatching the gameplay demo it looks empty and a bit sterile, like they're showing off base mechanics and general motion through a world that's a long way from finished. The E3 reveal should show actual substance of how the game works as a comprehensive package, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's some twist element like Skyward Sword's flight and underworld, and Twilight Princess's wolf transformation.

Yeah I was disappointed when the cave spider chase was no where to be found in game. I wonder if the chase scene from the reveal video will actually make it.

They did reuse it, sort of, in Spirit Tracks. When you go through some tunnels, a huge Gohma chases after your train. It's pretty cool.

Not "like", that's exactly what it was. Whoever thinks that's what the final game will feel or be like ignores how game development works.

Nah, that definitely goes into the pile of things they realised weren't amazing so got put into a later game.

I'm honestly hoping the gimmick for Zelda U is a Day Z type survival system where you're encouraged to seek shelter at night. But really, I want zipline arrows.

It is pretty crazy how the first 2 trailers showed off a completely different game than the one we got.

They need to use those trailers as a starting point to the next-gen console Zelda game. Zelda team must watch them a ton of times and understand what I want from Zelda.... XD

Made this banner a while back, since Nintendo has yet to make one!
It is in celebration of my potentially devastating hype for a possible GDC trailer. (It seems they've made a point to show Zelda at every single one since Twilight Princess, although that was before Directs....

Hype

Beautiful hype.

If Zelda gets a trailer at GDC then I'll happily take a tag that insults me and never gets removed.

Ergo, don't expect it. March Direct will stir up a bit of hype for an E3 blowout. Until then, expecting nothing.

Arrows WILL be the gimmick though. There will be about 10 types of arrow that replace all regular items like the hookshot, grappling hook, whip, spinner, et al

And Zelda U won't be at GDC 2015 ;) ...

Iwata was opening keynote speaker in '05, '06, '09, '11 and Miyamoto did the 2007 opening keynote. And now you'll realize why we won't be seeing Zelda at GDC this year.

Master, there is a 0.0001% chance that we'll see any mention of Zelda U at GDC.

Arrows as the gimmick would be really cool. If more open, expansive environments with minimal loading is Zelda U's thing, I'd love to see it embrace this with your tools for exploration. Rope arrows, ziplines, etc.

Really, what Wii U-tier hardware can provide is what Skyward Sword needed for its concept to really thrive.

God I hope we get to keep the cloak.

I'd be ok with this.
the master sword was somehow melted down and turned into arrow heads as well lol

Seeing these gif is getting hype again.

Why did you do this? Its not making the wait any easier.

If the bow arrow is going to be this game's key item/gimmick/Macguffin then I'm really hoping that it's central ability (or abilities) is going to lead to some really inventive timeshift stone-tier dynamics; I'm not really liking the idea of it being a "jack of all trades master of none"-esque item, that sounds needlessly pointless and somewhat limiting from a game design perspective and an artistic one.
:P

I'd be pretty happy to see this cliche "glorified sightseeing simulator" "press-up-on-the-control-stick-for-5/10 mins" horse manure free-roaming overworld dynamic get thrown in the garbage for something actually takes advantage of Zelda's core mechanics and dynamics; you know, an actual refinement of the pre-dungeon dungeon-like areas that were introduced (though one could argue that they've always existed in a somewhat limited form) in SS.

I mean...forgive my negativity (Nayru knows that we don't need more of it in Zelda threads), but I'd be happy to see a focused dungeon-like pre-dungeon area be showed off at E3 2015 because it'll at least indicate to me that EAD3 is not entirely enamored with just building "same old same old" fantasy game glorified sightseeing dynamics and that they're actually refining evolving one of SS's best most substantial game elements.

You know what, after Skyward Sword I fully believe that EAD 3 can majorly fuck up again, even if all this pre-release footage is looking good right now. Maybe it will happen in the form of (non)rewarding exploration, where all you'll get for exploring the overworld are rupees and heart pieces instead of, say, better gear, upgrade materials, items, etc.

But where I feel they can and possibly will fuck up the most is game progressing. I'm afraid that they will keep us out of parts of the overworld until a later part of the game, in order to assure that we know where to go. That means no real exploring until the game is almost over, no fighting against harder enemies at the beginning of the game, no chance to get valuable equipment, items, etc. at the beginning of the game. That would really be enraging.

this is a bit off topic, but what was the last time nintendo's internal studios put out a legitimately bad mario/zelda game? Their track record with them is insanely stellar

Can't speak for Mario, but arguably all Zelda games are thought to be good to very good games in general, whereas singular titles can vary in terms of being a good, mediocre or bad Zelda game. For instance, there will always be people that don't think the newest Zelda game is a good Zelda game, but will tell you that it's still a good game compared to other games.

Phantom Hourglass, Skyward Sword

take a pick

every four years there's a bad one so 2015 is going to be a bad year for a new zelda game unless there's shipping

It would suck if we had the entire world open from the start. That would destroy motivation and give the game just a sandbox feel. I have nothing against exploring big parts of the overworld, but the entire openworld open from the start..., the story and dungeon complexity would suffer from that.

I'm with you on that. Guess these times are over and Nintendo just won't care about hype even though its very important.

If Nintendo are smart then they'll be able to design an overworld where you can't progress past certain points because you lack story-related items that make sense beyond MAGIC BARRIER. Like upgrades to Epona's horseshoes or something that lets her travel through an ice cavern.

But think about replayability. Once you know where everything is and where you get everything, it would become interesting to start taking different paths from the beginning in order to progress differently. For me, a good action/adventure game is a game that allows for different paths to be taken from the beginning that may vary in difficulty and rewards, and that may give you a different experience on each subsequent playthrough, not just "the one path that is laid out from the developers".
