Street Fighter V - Charlie Nash trailer; beta for all pre-orders in NA

I loved it when he had that, added much needed variety to the 3 classics he'd had across the iterations. He had it in SFxT as well.

What I really hope for V is that they improve the air game. If jumping could be variable as with KOF, you can put real pressure on opponents with jumps and not just on wakeup.

Even the short hop from the SFIII series would be welcome.

Otherwise we get a game with characters with super quick recovery after projectiles, super long invincibility on AA's and sad/high/slow jumping. And we wonder how come there's so much footsies in SF.

Id personally like ryu to receive his axe overhead kick from evil ryu and his third strike/x tekken wall bounce kick.

God I hope this isnt the case im tired of seeing SF2 characters, SF3 character designs for life.

I think I have to agree with this as well. I like SFII's iconic characters as much as the next person, but we need something fresh at this point. Veterans wanting their mains to make a return shouldn't be a reason for stagnating this series I feel. Having a few returning ones, ideally from different games, and a good selection of new ones would give all players a somewhat level playing field - which, going by Ono's statements about wanting to attract new younger players, might be the approach they're going for.

My ideal scenario would be if only Ryu, Chun-li, Bison and perhaps Ken or Fei Long would return from SFII (though I could have done without Bison myself). I think Honda, Guile, Sagat, Balrog and the rest should be benched this round (with Sagat being replaced by a new Kickboxer style character). As for Alpha, I'd like to see only Charlie and two or three others return (Karin, R. Mika, or a partly redesigned Cody perhaps - preferably no Sakura without a redesign though). The rest of the roster would ideally consist of SFIII characters, SFIV newcomers and completely new ones.

Above all I would like Alex and Haggar to be there. Juri, C. Viper and Hakan I wouldn't mind to see return as well. Ibuki, Urien and Yun I wouldn't mind either but also wouldn't miss. Dudley could return or a new boxer could be introduced - both options would suit me. A slightly more powerful Sean should replace Akuma as the new third shoto (I really wish they'd leave out Akuma at this point - he's become way too overused imo). Oro or Gouken could be the game's older fighter, with Oro being my preference. As for wacky / stretchy characters like Blanka or Dhalsim, I'd prefer new ones to be introduced to a return of Necro and Twelve but could live with them being in as well.

For the game to have any chance of a single player story mode that leaves an impact, it will also need a good new boss and preferably a good new sub boss as well. No more Seth-type move borrowing characters please. Above anything else - and as some here have mentioned - the game would also need character specific stages, but I doubt they'll go back to that after IV unfortunately.

Ps. I do like the trailer and game overall so far in case I sound critical - it's probably the game I look forward to the most, hence why I have my preferences in terms of characters etc.

Edit: I'll add a list of my preferred roster as well for convenience:

1. Ryu
2. Ken / Fei Long (or both)
3. Chun-li
4. Bison
5. Charlie
6. Karin / R. Mika / Cody (redesigned)
7. Haggar (to replace Zangief)
8. Sean (a bit stronger than he was in 3S, or even more comical to replace Dan?)
9. Alex
10. Dudley / new boxer
11. Oro / Gouken (or both)
12. Yun / Ibuki / Urien / new
13. Hakan / Juri / C. Viper / new
14. New (someone to fill the spot of the beast-like and/or Kickboxer character)
15. New (Someone to fill the spot of the keep away stretchy limbs and/or Kickboxer character)
16. New (could be a sub boss as well; would like it if he/she was a ninja type to replace Ibuki / Vega - there always should be one ninja at least!)
17. New boss (with unique moveset)

Fine, my list...which is ever changing, limited to 16 for whatever most are doing here.

1. Ryu
2. Sean (improved, or replacing Dan as joke character)/Sakura (grown up, new moves)
3. Charlie
4. Guile/Ken
5. Bison
6. Tom/Alex
7. Urien/Gill
8. Dudley
9. Retsu/Gouken/Gen
10. Abel
11. Chun-Li
12. Twelve/Necro
13. New doll
14. New (Cobra!)
15. New female
16. New

If this is set right before III, I guess Ken should be at home, leaving fighting behind him temporarily with Mel being born.

Guile just makes sense for Charlie's story.
Need an old man, so maybe Retsu understands Gouken is back, so sets out to find him.

Twelve/Necro for the "freak" character. Right time to move the story into the SFIII direction as well, anyhow.

It's quite male heavy, so either Juri/Viper returns, or a new female is made. Honestly thought Juri was a weak character in terms of design and style.

It's pretty hard to pick existing characters limited to 12. So many play styles, and yet story options to consider, which could in turn make the play styles limited (do not want shotos everywhere).

I'm fine with 16 as a starting point but I hope they don't wait too long to add more characters. The game doesn't have to get as big as Ultra, but I'd like to see around 30 characters 2-3 years after SFV is released. I'd like to see plenty of new characters as well, but not on a level like SF3 where the vast majority were brand new. More like a 60/40 split with 60 being old and 40 being new.

When did this ever happen? When did people ever have to demand SF2 character DLC? Most SF2 characters were already in vanilla SF4, and no one gives a crap about Dee Jay or Hawk.

Well that's why.

You know...we actually have, like, TANGIBLE evidence of character popularity. No need to make stuff up. Capcom did an official survey, remember?
http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2013/...-fighter-favorite-characters-popularity-poll/

Yes we do not need to speculate. And that's a nice and popularized poll - even here on GAF and I as well as others voted. Not surprisingly the Top 15 looks like this.

1. Ryu
2. Ken
3. Akuma
4. Chun-Li
5. Cammy
6. Sakura
7. Karin
8. Juri
9. Sagat
10. Q
11. Guile
12. R. Mika
13. M. Bison
14. Cody
15. Zangief

I see M. Bison, Sagat, Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Chun Li, Cammy, Guile on my list - 8 out of 16 (4 being new). 4 more being: Dhalsim (unique), Fei Long (popular in SFIV still - going way back to SSFII), Rose (popular and from Alpha), Balrog (still popular and story anchor character as Bison's enforcer).

Your problem is you don't take the environment into account. The FGC environment in 2009 was totally different than the environment in 2015. In 2009 there hadn't been a numbered SF game in a decade. Therefore, SF4 had to serve as a reintroduction to the series, with classic characters returning.

I am not oblivious to the enviroment. I am clearly aware of people wanting, "shiny" new things - in jest. In short, new characters and some popular ones from Alpha and Third Strike

In 2015, a new SF game JUST came out less than a year ago, with a patch that JUST came out in December. People are TIRED of SF4. Casuals are tired of it. Pro players are tired of it. If you release another SF4 in 2015, you will NOT get the same result that you got in 2009.

It's definitely a balance game - the old, the new. My list is subjective. You can disagree. There are SF2 characters, one from SSFII, and SFAlpha and room for a couple more. I am clearly not a fan of Alpha/Third Strike as much as the classics...that can deduced from my list by anyone. I will not say anything about third strike when it comes to the core mechanics but that's about it for me. I can sympathize with wanting more fresh characters but like I said, the old staples will come back one way or another.

going by the plot, would Abel be a lock?

I'm a little perplexed why people think storyline considerations are the main determiner of why a character would make it in or not. They could have any character they need for the story show up in cutscenes and not be playable.

People in this thread are acting like the SF games are just piggybacking on the wild success of the Udon comics.

Really excited for the new characters but the more I think about it, the more I feel SF4's additions to the roster were poor.

Hakan and Rufus in particular are terrible (Rufus more so) and Decapre doesn't seem to fit.

I want some serious new characters this time, someone that is actually cool.

Hakan was awesome.

I love Hakan's and Decapre's designs -- they're real unique characters. I also think Abel is great.

I don't think Hakan would fit in SFV. Decapre and Abel totally could, though.

The SF2 cast is what makes a Street Fighter game, I'd rather them than Capcom take risks on making new characters. Rufus and El Fuerte are the worst designed characters in the franchise, they're both jokes. I'm also not a fan of Hakan, he's too goofy.

I would bet on Viper and Juri being the only ones out of 4 making.

 • That said to go against myself, 4 was greatly GREATLY successful, on that token more people from 4 could come back.
 • Gouken was introduced in 4 i have a hard time believing they would make that character just to take him out. I think he will be secret boss status like akuma,
 • Also seth, who is probably plot relevant if the Illuminati or if juri is there.
 • To people that are about to say " But seth was the boss in the last game" Unless I am inccorect Gill is the only SF final boss that wasn't made into a regular character in another game, and that's because he was in street fighter 3. I have no issue believing seth would make it in somehow. Though if that happens, there isn't a need for twelve.

I'm a little perplexed why people think storyline considerations are the main determiner of why a character would make it in or not.

Judging by Nash's design and Ono statements in the past, storyline seems to have a bit more relevance this time around.

It might not be the only factor, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually a consideration.

The SF2 cast is what makes a Street Fighter game, I'd rather them than Capcom take risks on making new characters. Rufus and El Fuerte are the worst designed characters in the franchise, they're both jokes. I'm also not a fan of Hakan, he's too goofy.

And, Juri is now one of the top 10 most favorite characters in the entire series. The reward blows away the risk by a mile.

Hakan was awesome.

Yes, he is.

Hakan terrible? Hogwash!

I thought that his addition was amazing, and I really like his gimmick. I wouldn't bet on Hakan coming back in Street Fighter V due to his popularity.

My guesses

1. Ryu
2. Chun-Li
3. Charlie
4. M. Bison
5. Cammy
6. Ken
7. Crimson Viper
8. Juri
9. Karin
10. Urien
11. Guile
12. Newbie
13. Newbie
14. Newbie
15. Newbie
16. Akuma
Juri is a dead lock for the game. She's one of the top 8 most popular Street Fighter characters of all time.
Really?

For people who want to discuss on Seth, Abel and Bison!

According to the official UK website, Abel is "actually nothing more than a genetically engineered replacement body created for use by M. Bison. He was to be disposed of with the other failed creations, but he alone managed to survive and escape ". His status as a spare body is hinted at by several elements in the games, including his Soulless Ultra Combo.

Abel was the first person to be chosen by Bison to be converted into a doll. Unlike other dolls which are marked by number, this successful one was named "Abel", and would later influence the naming of another of the spare bodies. Based on UDON's Street Fighter IV comic, after Bison's doll No. 15 lost his battle with Akuma, his head was kicked hard, resulting in the software installed by Bison being destroyed and No. 15 becoming free; he then named himself Seth.[4]

Abel was found in an abandoned Shadaloo base suffering from amnesia and raised by a mysterious soldier. Abel claims that the man who found him died recently, and Abel feels that he has had no family. After finding a stray puppy and taking him in,[5] he starts a journey of discovery to find who he really was and where he came from, after which he says he will be able to name the dog. He first goes to the detective, Chun-Li, who is investigating Shadaloo. Upon hearing his connection to Shadaloo, she recommends that he participate in the S.I.N. Tournament to learn more about his past.

Juri should be 7 instead of 8 according to the poll numbers, though.

I liked her when she first debuted but kind of fell off playing her as time went on. Watching someone who knew what they were doing with her could be fun. I remember Daigo in a interview talking about how he didn't like her because her hurt boxes were strange/small...or something to that effect.

If Guile gets included, I hope that he..

* plays more like his SF2 self, not the SF4 incarnation
* has GUILE THEME with him
* and his military themed stage

leave his moveset alone.

Guile doesn't need any fancy new fight moves.

Guile plays the same in SF2 and SF4, it's the game's system that are different. And he carries that theme wherever he goes, its not going anywhere.

Just going by rationality, this is probably the closest to the roster you can expect going down the polls and editing for diversity:

1. Ryu
2. Ken
3. Akuma
4. Chun-li
5. Cammy
6. Zangief
7. Karin
8. Juri
9. Charlie
10. M. Bison
11. Q
12. Dudley

The risk is fine when you have a roster of 44 characters, then you can cushion a few shitty characters. But if Capcom really does keep SF5 to about 18-20 characters, even one shitty character will be highly noticeable.

Agreed. Plus, the Zero/Alpha series was doing just fine even before the third game (and its updates) finally decided to throw in more SF2/SSF2 veterans. How will you know who might become the next "Sakura" or "Juri", unless you take such chances?

I honestly wouldn't mind if they tried to do that again. Plus saving the World Warriors and other veterans for updates is pretty much the main way I could see Capcom giving good reason for people to buy in.

1. Ryu
2. Ken
3. Charlie
4. Chun-li
5. Makoto
6. Birdie
7. Alex
8. Juri
9. Oro
10. M. Bison
11. Q
12. Dudley
13. Poison
14. Cammy
15. Dhalsim
16. Honda
17. Guile

19. New character
20. New character

They've stated that they want to decrease the number of characters seen in USF4, vanilla SF5 roster has been rumored to be 18 characters. Could just be a bluff. I'd personally love to see a huge roster again, I love variety. But I also want to see all the classic characters that make the franchise what it is.

I think MKX may end up being a good example of roster choice. The favorites are in and the new characters have been great so far.

They should just eliminate discrepancies and make the entire cast shitty

We're not going to see a huge roster fight out of the gate, though. We got to the number in SF4 over 7 years.

Gief might not make it the first time around imo.
switch Q with Alex.

There's no way Alex is missing from this game. He's the main character of SF3, no matter if this is before or after, he's going to be in.

Hopefully. Charlie and Alex were the two big omissions from SFIV. Now that Charlie's been confirmed, I've got a good feeling about Alex.

I enjoy how every SFV thread devolves into everyone lobbying for their favorite characters.

Swapping out Gief for Haggar and adding Mika as the second grappler is the correct answer.

alex and karin will be probably the last characters announced..but let's wait until e3 and evo...ah and capcom cup with release date!
