The colors of this photo will appear different to everyone. I think?

What if it never changes for you?

My guess would be maybe subconsciously your eyes are focusing on the same spot or color each time? No idea.

All I know is not only have I seen it switch I've looked at the image with my wife right next to me and we saw totally different color spectrums on the dress.

Whatever is causing it this is an unbelievable illusion

Well, just to correct a bit... the bright warm light in the background is tungsten/other artificial light source. The cooler light would be the ambient daylight color which is naturally much cooler than most artificial light.

True, I guess it depends on what kind of artificial light it is, what time of day it is, white balance of the camera. There's just too many variables.

There's nothing wrong with which one your brain picks, it just sorta picks one and runs with it. Mine picked shadow at first, but once I realized it was light I can't go back to white/gold.

Same. At first I very distinctly saw a white dress behind a shadow. Now I very clearly see a well-lit blue dress, and I can't even fathom how to go back to white and gold.

Not true at all read the thread.

there were people hardcore in one camp, left, came back much later and saw the other color.

Its the most intense Illusion I've ever seen and I love this stuff

Believe me, I've been here since page 5. It's not going to change because the contextual clues aren't changing. The image is yellow / white shifted due to over exposure. This means that white cannot become blue, in such a case, it would be blue becoming white. It's also impossible that there's a shadow on the front of the dress causing a cooler image because there's light shining on the black trimming, you can tell its a direct light source thanks to the drastic differences in shade on the trimming. This pretty much makes it impossible for the dress to be white. I can only assume that people who are seeing it right are just picking up the subtextual lighting cues and thus adjusting the image appropriately in their head. The only way to see it as white is if you don't pick up any lighting context at all.

First time I looked at this, it was white and gold, so I had no idea what was the deal. I just assumed another GAF shitthread (sorry, OP).

But then I saw it mentione elsewhere and I looked at it again and now it's baby-blue and dark gold. What the fffff.

I've been following this thread for most on the night. The photo was white/gold the entire night until moments ago while i was looking at the photo it changed from white/gold to blue/black. I can't handle this shit. And now it's back to white/gold. I'm going to bed.

My twitter feed is going crazy over this dress. Is this how destroy ourselves? Team Blue/Black ( superior team) vs Team White/Gold.

I swear I just saw it switch directions.

Look at the shadow of the foot that's sticking out.
Comes into view on the right and leaves on the left, making an arc with its motion toward the 'back' of the image.
Were you to look at her with a bird's eye view, she'd be spinning anti-clockwise.

I've had it go from black and blue to gold and white back to black and blue over the course of the evening. At one point I pulled it up on two screens and saw the other image change color a bit to match.

My initial response was black and blue but the black was just assumed, looking at it it's more brown (not really gold but do understand how others see gold). However, I just can't see white.

"What's happening here is your visual system is looking at this thing, and you're trying to discount the chromatic bias of the daylight axis," Conway told Wired. "So people either discount the blue side, in which case they end up seeing white and gold, or discount the gold side, in which case they end up with blue and black."
- neuroscientist Bevil Conway of Wellesley College from that Vice article.

This seems like the correct answer, but it's nevertheless going to be a very interesting explanation of 1) what causes different people to choose which side to discount and 2) what causes the same person to switch.
