Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge Event - March 1st.

They copied Apple on so many other things that the only thing left to copy was the pricing.

Samsung is trying to be Pepsi to Apples Coke. In many ways the S6 is a much better device than the iPhone 6 at around the same price points. They're going to lose some sales with the removal of the swappable battery and SD card slot but they should be able to bring on new customers with a better design and better materials (like me). I don't like paying large premiums for more inbuilt storage, but I prefer inbuilt memory to external where you can't install apps. Things like wireless charging, fast charging, Samsung pay, super high res screen and 3gb or ram are compelling. My only worries are how the battery life is, if the processor can keep up with the res well and how cool the device runs under load. If they can nail all three of those, I'm on board.

aren't those prices very comparable to the iPhone 6?

Is the apple tax just not as high when it comes to their phones (compared to mac vs pc) or is Samsung just increasing profit margins as well?

Also, charging 100$ more for 32 GB respectively 64 GB sounds like a good reason to remove SD card support...

Profit per device will go up but I think overall volume sales will go down. They made a similar mistake that Google did last year with their overpriced and too large Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. It's like the companies forgot what made them successful and they just want to chase after Apple's consumers.

If any company can retain their margins with high prices devices in the west its Samsung. They still have a strong brand and have the dollars to do large marketing campaigns. I think they'll do well with these phones if they market them well, there are some really compelling features built into these things.

Agreed. My fiance really wants one now. She loved her Nexus 5, but hated the camera so this seems perfect for her.

Thanks to Phone Arena we have more info and a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S6's and Galaxy S6 Edge's TouchWiz Themes.
One of the new features that the Galaxy S6's TouchWiz version is going to introduce is called... Themes! And while the concept of 'theming' is known perfectly well within the Android community, we have to say that Samsung's new implementation of the feature looks quite promising.

....

Having this in mind, it's even more exciting to know that TouchWiz Themes, as found on the upcoming Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, are will be open to development from third parties, so pretty much everyone with the desire and knowledge to build themes will be able to do so. At the current time, there are just a few options to choose from in the Theme store, but hopefully, the catalog will grow quickly as the new smartphones hit the market and their popularity starts growing.

Default Theme

So with this new feature anyone with the knowledge can create a Stock Android Theme, a Sense 7 Theme, Xperia Theme, etc..

Yeah, I find it hard to mourn the loss of sd cards when android has fucked with how useful the things are. Hell, due to a bug in my phone's version, 3rd party applications can't even delete photos on the sd card. At this point, I'll just take fast internal flash and not have to worry about it. Then again, I'm not throwing tons of HD movies on the phone, so I don't need more space than they're offering internally.

Sorry not sure if this was answered yet, but is the only real difference between the Edge and regular the edge feature?

Also, any hand-on impressions of Edge?

I've owned an iPhone for the past three cycles but damn that S6 Edge is beautiful.

Then again, I'm not buying a phone over 5" so I won't be buying one. :(

Given that the S6 has a screen that is 0.4" larger than the iPhone 6's, the phones are actually pretty comparable size wise, namely due to the S6 having much thinner bezels surrounding the screen, top, bottom and sides.

That it's not a 2.0Ghz octa-core. What part of my post is unclear?

Are you being dumb on purpose? It's an 8 core CPU. Octacore.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. It doesn't matter if we're talking Exynos 5410 (big.little) or mediatek 6492 (true octacore) they both are 8 cores.

What is so hard to understand? Clearly you read one internet article and suddenly think you're an expert.

Or perhaps you're talking about clock speed in which case yes there are 2x4 cores clocked differently. But that doesn't mean there are not 8 cores.

sssooo wait, I missed this but basically it is an iPhone?

No SD card slot, no removable battery and the design is way to similar?

Am I skimming through this thread correctly?

If the camera is supposed to be better than the Note 4 it is going to be godlike.

So happy about the themes. Loved that about my G2. Rather not use a 3rd party launcher if not needed.

That back looks great.

Design wise, I think it's now:

Moto X 2014 Bamboo -> iPhone 6 -> S6 Edge -> Z3C -> O+O

I would have NEVER put Samsung in the Top 3... so that's really saying something.

16MP, OIS, ƒ/1.9, auto real-time HDR, low-light video, high clear zoom, IR detect white balance, virtual shot, slow motion, fast motion, pro mode, selective focus

No, I meant as in using the phone to capture photos and comparing them to other top of the line phones. You can't really say "I wanted a better camera" when all you have to go by is a spec list. Cameras need to be judged by the results, not the paper specs.

Samsung has done such a good job with the S6. The iPhone 6 screen is going to look so average next to the S6's.

M9 is the best option right now, but if you plan on taking loads of pictures don't go for it. People are largely disappointed because it didn't change much from M8. I'm leaning that route right now, but wait and see if LG announces the G4 anytime soon to release it nearby the M9 release date. Most of the complaints of it that I've seen are battery life and janky OS, which could be fixed with optimization from LG's part.

tl;dr it's the best option out of flagship phones right now, but wait and see for G4.

Edit: honestly as of right now I don't see the G4 being announced for a summer-ish release, so maybe the M9 might be my option.

The M8 is already perfect for all the above, especially the music part, so i'd say yes.

Get my upgrade in August, so the M9 is recommended?

Not sure if anyone has posted these game benchmark numbers:

What a joke battery is actually smaller than S5 and non-removable on top of tha too. Phone companies really need to drop this obsession with thinness.
The obsession with thinness, the megapixel obsession, and the battery draining resolution obsession are all really stupid.

What is your basis for being negative on increased resolution or megapixels? Where have Samsung messed up by improving either of these things in the past?

If true, these results are very impressive.

Not really, unless one of the themes is "stock android" The examples shown look terrible.

So you didn't read the article.

I gotta say I'm quite impressed at the lengths Samsung will go through to copy Apple. Holy shit, they're not even trying to hide it anymore.

So none of you peeps are interested in this feature?

I think its great and I'm happy they've opened it up to 3rd party devs to make their own themes. I'm not a fan of touchwiz's styling, so I'm looking forward to seeing what others make for the phone.

You seem to be confusing me talking shit about Apple consumers and me talking shit about Apple. Apple is an amazing company that does incredibly well for its shareholders, a point I've made time and time again.

That would be even worse since you are essentially talking shit about lots of people in this very forum.
Keep your shitposting about apple/apple consumers on apple thread at least and not it other threads that have nothing to do with it.

It's been over 3 years since I have gotten a new phone and I'm on contract for an upgrade too. Was hoping this was going to be the phone to upgrade to, but I'm definitely not dropping $350 with a contract upgrade for a phone that isn't much of an upgrade from an S5 that will be between free and $50 7 months from its release date.

What's the best phone for approximately $200~$250 (with a 2 year contract) that is out or coming out soon? Just looking for good battery life, camera, and screen resolution. Any chance the Note 4 goes on sale once this phone drops?

What is a battery pull?
Pulling out the battery while the phone is on

I doubt it but I definitely recommend the phone if you want a big upgrade from the GS5

I'm not sure if you've looked at it, but if price is a concern I'd personally get the LG G3 over the Galaxy Note 4. It's an awesome phone and it's a lot cheaper than the Note 4.

I'm not sure which carrier you have, but Amazon has the LG G3 for $0.01 with a two-year contract and if you're with AT&T they also throw in a $100 Amazon Gift Card.

Could somebody explain to me why people buy phones on contract instead of buying them unlocked? 2 or 3 years is a shit long time to be stuck with a certain carrier / phone.

I'm not sure why there would be any real sales specifically because of the new S6. The S series and the Note series typically appeal to different people. Note has the larger screen, the stylus, etc. I mean, I have the Note 2 and will be upgrading this year to a new phone, but I'm not totally sold on the S6. Even with the stylus not being an issue for me, I'm not sure I want to go to a smaller screen. And that's with only a .4 inch drop - smaller than the Note 4 gap. It'll really come down to how I like it when I see/use it in person at a store.

Because saving ~500 bucks?

Speaking specifically of Canada, you generally want a contract because:
(1) the cancellation fee equals the amount you saved on the phone, and...
(2) the big guys are all on virtually the same network so as long as you plan on living in Canada there isn't much of a downside

Of course, we have the highest rates, but also basically a restriction to max 2 year plans, so ymmv in the US.

The plans now for on contract phones are shit. I've got a plan with bell that has 600mins, VM, caller Id, unlimited texts, and 6gigs of data for $60. Can't get anything like that at that price on or off contract anymore. I'd rather buy phones outright and keep my plan.

Also I'd like to buy phones unlocked, when you buy one from a carrier you have to pay to get it unlocked in the future.

Is there any way to buy Samsung phones outright in canada like you can with apple phones at an apple store?

US prices are so ridiculously expensive. Not only do you pay a high monthly fee but you also pay upwards of $200 for the latest smartphone on contract.

Here in the UK for example you can get Unlimited Mins/Texts, Premium numbers, EU roaming & 20GB of data for around £45pm/$70 (or even unlimited data on some networks) and the most you end up paying for the phone is say £29 or even free. Of course you can pay more upfront and less per month should you desire.

Bear in mind that the £45 quoted is actually the high end and most phone contracts in the UK are around the £25-£35pm range.

Just to clarify, no cancellation fees on 2 year terms in canada since 2013 and there are no three year terms on consumer accounts any more but higher minimums instead. The savings on byod don't make much difference at the end of 2 years since you'd be paying the same anyway (unless you have an old plan you don't want to lose)..

Bell and Telus share a network so you get the most coverage with them but the crtc enforced carriers to have access to each others network so Rogers has domestic roaming now.
