PlayStation 4 hits 20.2 million units sold worldwide (high sodium content warning)

UC4 needs a big marketing campaign, dudebro games seem to appeal to the US far more than EU which is why God of War & Halo get the majority of their sales in the US, UC just may not appeal to the dudebro gamers.

Indiana Jones and wiping out a small army seems like it would be right up their alley. It was probably just hurt by the PS3's poor showing in the US.

Any idea how the HD remaster did? The only HD collection I remember any publisher really bragging about was the God of War Collection. Broke a million pretty quickly, iirc.

Which is kinda a shame, given the God of War Collection was one of the first (the first?) HD rereleases, and it was pretty poorly done, in retrospect.

The GoW HD collection was an anomaly, it sold 2.5 million WW, I don't think any HD collection even came close to that number, & it was riding the GoW3 hype.

every time I see toro somewhere I wonder why the fuck sony won't come out with a nice little platformer game with him in it.

they should've been pushing him more as the mascot all these years.

after having an elongated console generation, you'd think the tech jump would've been that much larger between the two. instead, we have the smallest leap/jump in power yet. hopefully ever. but i'm in my mid 20s now so whatever they do in future gens, I really shouldn't care as much.

I think that the 'rut' in games today is mostly down to how the industry is today(lesser diversification) and less about the hardware specs.

PS4 is basically a dramatically improved 360, so if the talent is there to create new or better experiences, i think that should be enough if the dev has the talent to make a great game.

That's just my opinion on it anyway. I may just be getting old, but i find myself satisfied with most aspects of games today as long as they are done well. Back when i was a kid, i always was anticipating the newest shit thinking it was going to be a complete revelation from what i had before.

But that was also during the time of transition, as 2D graphics got more and more advanced, and then evolved into the third dimension and advanced from there

Probably, but the game's presentation & cast is not very dudebro-friendly I guess. You need a bald space marine & a sausagefest cast to qualify. & this isn't me taking shots at dudebro games, I enjoy a lot of those games, but the audience for those games probably wants an all-bald "badass" cast

SCE Japan and SCE US are, from a regional business standpoint, individual companies that's self-managed in stuff like marketing, etc.

It's a double edged sword. It's how Japanese games that has zero global appeal gets funded and published by Sony Japan, (and in the past, completely snubbed for localisation from Sony US at times), but how stuff like Spring Fever is a US-only promotion, because it's presumably individually decided by Sony US.

It's more the lineup up until now that's the problem.

Knack sucked.
Killzone sucked (from what I've heard, not my thing so haven't played it).
Infamous was decent, though a step down from 2 in many areas.
Driveclub was broken at launch.
LittleBigPlanet 3 was fairly average from what I've heard (yet to play it myself).
The Order has had a very bad reception (again, just from what I've heard as it's not my thing).

So while the future line up looks promising, the games above looked promising at one point too. I have faith Bloodborne and Persona will deliver at least though.
What am I reading? Infamous was a great game, not decent. LBP3 is fun as hell, just not as good as LBP2 who I consider one of the best games I played last generation (2nd best platformer after SMG1). Killzone didn't suck. Knack was.. err. I thought it was the definition of an average game but totally understandable that people thought it sucked.

Also, where have you heard a lot of this?

I think it was that and the fact that HD rereleases were a pretty new thing.

I bought the GoW Collection and a couple of others from series I liked that I wouldn't have bought if I had to make that choice today. Eventually I started limiting my purchases to just games I *loved*, like Okami HD and Wind Waker HD (though WWHD was more than just a port).

I can't imagine I'm the only one who thought buying a better version of a game I enjoyed was a good idea until they started coming out every other month.

I was about to ask if we were around the same age, because back when I was ~9 years old, Ps2 was the big talk of the town, and rightfully so jumping from the Ps1. Man was I such a happy kid.

Let's hope from here on out that the 'rut' will consist of, a consistency of quality games for this gen.

I'm guessing with Nintendo, the same principles apply? although for them, they have arguably the greatest and most iconic video game IPs there have ever been, they've been phenomenons, hugely parts of pop culture, and obviously with all this, have made impacts worldwide.

He did make an appearance in the ps4 E314 app, which took me by surprise and made me smile from ear to ear.

A fun little platformer or Animal Crossing-esque game built around Toro's humor would be perfect. I had fun doing stupid chores in Toro's Friend Network, ffs.

Improved re-released were happening even in the SNES era, but I think the difference is that they always received stealth releases, GoW collection was the first re-release to get a big marketing campaign, which was very novel at the time.

e314 app? e3 comes out with apps now for their conferences?

this would be nice.
I asked this same question and the answer seems to be

a. the number is too low for mS's ego to reveal
b. companies usually do sold-in numbers anyway, not sold-through.

also, I thought that this whole gen so far, that the xbone has been outpacing at least its predecessor? is it falling behind that too?

More likely the number is too low.

Those were more remakes then remasters, at least for stuff like mario all stars. For the GBC/GBA we had a ton of ports though. The GOW one was kind of special in that it started from a 'what would you like in the GOW 3 special edition' survey, but got such a huge response that they spun it off into a separate thing.

I love Playstation but I agree it doesn't deserve the sale... not at this point of its lifecycle. There is no noticeable game at all.

Once the idea caught on, it seemed everyone and their brother wanted to put one out. Some were great, others were atrocious, and a few started out crap but were later fixed.

Deserves? Some consumers clearly disagree with you. I mean someone is buying these things. Not to mention who decides what is an important game? From what I can tell people have decided it is third party multiplats, which is exactly what the PS4 has.

& which higher power decides which sale is deserving or not? I'm pretty sure millions of KZ fans were happy with their PS4, Infamous fans must be pretty happy as well...& most importantly, CoD & FIFA fans seem to be happy with the PS4.

Look at how much begging had to be done to get Xenoblade and The Last Story localised.

because they are jrpgs yes, but the majority of nintendo's big IPs aren't, and thus neither are their mascots. as well playstation hasn't had a consistent mascot and toro is a perfect fucking fit.

One thing i don't like is how people assume their standards for games apply toward everyone else.

People are obviously buying these consoles, and games with them to boot.

"Oh but they don't have exclusive exclusives that are good, AAA, not on PC/PS3 and what i like to play to begin with"

And....? How does that even matter to the reasons anyone else buys the unit?

For me, i don't care about games on PC, i don't have one so they are new to me. For PS3 games, i'm not gonna buy the inferior version of a game if a better one is accessible, hence i buy for PS4 by default.

It changes by person

I agree.

Unfortunately, this man, and those before him didn't.

Shawn Layden, I know you're in GAF. Want me to have a higher opinion of you? Give Toro a chance in the US.

As for me, I (finally) bought PS3 in 2012 and I have a decent PC. So, PS4 multiplat games would be the inferior version of my PC. I'll definitely get a PS4 later, perhaps at the same timeline as I bought PS3, when the majority of its exclusives already available. The only title that might push me to buy a PS4 earlier would be FFXV in 2016, but that's still a maybe.

People still complaining about the library?

I feel like I always have something new to play now with the indies peppered in between the bigger titles. It's kind of perfect for me. Helps me take a breather and play something different and not get burned out on those huge open world games.

Now if only aaa titles didn't all wait until the fall to release. One can dream...

I recently saw Sony advertising for it's spring madness sale on youtube. I was legit shocked. Pushing advertisements for sales now on youtube might be a pretty significant target in marketing.

And that's fine. I'm just saying this to the people continuously asking why people are buying the console in bewilderment as if everyone didn't have their own reasons for doing so.

It just feels like moving goalposts for no real reason.

You have every right to enjoy the multiplats on PC, but looking at the sales of third party games, most people don't care about the superior PC version, hell in some cases like Metal Gear people buy the PS3 version more than the PC & Xbone versions combined by a very wide margin. Or even Ubisoft in some quarters had the PS3 selling the second most titles only after PS4, even though the PS3 version is likely the worst version.

People don't care about performance, they never have, the PS2 is a testament to that.

I am more annoyed with people lacking any resemblance of consistency. For some of them, advocating on gameplay strictly restricts to genre they like. The rest are oblivious to them.

Also see Ps+ being mandatory or dlc locked behind Amiibo.

But it's okay, it's not hard to get used to these people and filter out their platform/company centric opinions.

This is what happens when you build your system around the needs of developers rather than gimmicks like the Wii U(useless tablet controller) and the Xbox One(Kinect/DVR/???).

Good job Sony.

Insane considering the lack of good exclusive titles
So where would you expect Xbox One is? 13 millions?
News flash: Most people don't care about exclusives. If they did then the situation would be reversed and the Wii U would be on top.

Updated. Because I'm bored and curious:

Code:
Date Days Cumulative	Incremental	Per Day
11/15/2013 1,000,000
12/1/2013	16 2,100,000 1,100,000 68,750
12/28/2013	27 4,200,000 2,100,000 77,778
2/8/2014	42 5,300,000 1,100,000 26,190
3/2/2014	22 6,000,000 700,000 31,818
4/6/2014	35 7,000,000 1,000,000 28,571
8/10/2014	126 10,000,000 3,000,000 23,810
1/2/2015	145 18,500,000 8,500,000 58,621
3/3/2015	60 20,200,000 1,700,000 28,333
Only thing I note is, basic seasonal patterns, and the PS4 seems to be selling at about the same pace since the holidays as it did last year, in in global sales. If they're happy with that pace, it explains the lack of price cut.

Some companies give platform splits on their software in their fiscal reports, as Konami did last quarter. That's why he was able to mention Metal Gear as a specific example.

Having said that, the PC port also came late. Not as good as a comparison.

People seem to forget, multiplats sell consoles over first party. Ps4 has that on lockdown.

I'm using publically available data made available by the publishers themselves, I'm on my phone right now so I can't provide any sources, but I'm pretty sure plenty of posters can.
