Here's what I can post - full interview here.

games™ - Harmoix has been self-publishing for a little while – are you going to continue with that for Rock band 4, or are you going into the generation via Microsoft and Sony?

Harmonix - We’re looking at a co-publishing relationship with Mad Catz, actually; their skillset really offsets ours in a great way. We’ve got a lot of experience working with the brand – with MTV and going back before then to Sony in the [PS2] days. We worked with a lot of publishers over the years, and we’ve always been really hands-on. Our ability to market the game, to talk about the game, to demo the game… we’re confident with //all// of that.

So Mad Catz has an international distribution arm that handles and ships all their products – therefore, our relationship with them is very compatible. They have a lot to offer as a co-publisher and partner.

Thanks for this info! Very interesting!

From FAQ:
Q: Will my old DLC work if I bought a different next gen console, i.e. Xbox 360 -> PS4?
A: Cross platform DLC compatibility is not entirely within our control, as DLC ownership is managed by the 1st parties.

I will not be coming back because of this. I don't really care whether or not Harmonix has control over this. There are solutions to this problem, but they don't seem willing to address them, and therefore I'm not interested.

The issue with cross-platform DLC probably isn't a technical one, and there's an argument to be made that it isn't even an account issue (they could start creating accounts now and use the official stores or leaderboard scores to check which DLC you'd previously purchased). It's a money issue. Even if Harmonix decided they didn't want to get paid, the storefronts would want to, and the artists/rights holders would as well. And while the platform holders might be willing to take a lump sum for huge amounts of DLC, I don't see how that would work with the artists. So we'd more than likely be talking about a per-song fee that would probably be somewhere between 50 cents and a dollar, and a ton of negotiating to even get to that point. I don't see where that's worth it for Harmonix.

Very excited, although still a little disappointed. Not only are they getting rid of keys completely, but I've got to buy an XBox One now. But Ah well. I can't say no to rock band.

I don't get how people are saying "IT WILL SUPPORT OLD PERIPHERALS" when it was clearly mentioned that Harmonix is TRYING to work with first parties to make it happen. It hasn't been finalized.

Couple of clarifications

1) First Party doesn't just mean Xbox / Playstation - it also means the record companies. If you've ever worked with trying to license music...OHMYGODITISANNOYING. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony's video game arm couldn't get permission from Sony's music arm for licensing. It's that inane.

2) Alas, the issue with Destiny vs Rock Band is that Destiny was a clean start for a game; there was no importing from previous games. The only way to do cross platform connecting would be if you had a clean game (which would mean no importing). Because of how importing was done from RB game to RB game; it is tied to your xbox / psn account specifically (because the music industry hates us all). Some songs won't even transfer between games (Metallica I think is the one notorious for this) because of "licensing issues".

3) Dear lord am I glad I went X1 this generation. Thousands of dollars of DLC. About 1k in instruments (between buying them and time spent customizing them)

4) I am hoping one of my friends can get me one of the PAX East guitars. Those look sick.

You must be stupid to think that something like that is even remotely possible. Is it their fault you bought all your dlc on the 360, then went and got a ps4? No.

So there's no way to export RB2 songs anymore? The HMX site said the offer is expired. Didn't know if I could pick up a cheap copy and use the code.

I think the offer was for the free 20-track pack that you got with RB2 when it came out. I think the export is still live, albeit done through RB3 itself.

What can the really do? I honestly believe that Microsoft would throw a hissy fit, they know that alot of people got the rock band series on xobx 360 and they want a way to force people to buy a xbone.

I'd like it if the new guitars had the click for the strum ala Guitar Hero. I never got used to the RB designs (buttons included).

I basically went all PC a few years ago and haven't picked up a PS4 or Xbox One.

Assuming you can only bring songs from PS3 to PS4 or 360 to Xbox One, I'm 100% getting an Xbox One for Rock Band 4 because I have so many songs waiting to come over.

Tell me your solution then. If it's the standard "Harmonix account" nonsense, that's not going to fly.

I understand the frustration about this, but they are willing to address them, hence why they addressed them.

They were very transparent about it, it's not entirely within their control. DLC ownership is managed by Microsoft and Sony, it is not up to Harmonix to solve that problem. They can initiate conversation with the two parties, but they are being honest and transparent that the solution is not capable on their end.

So now I'm buying an Xbox One and can finally unplug the Xbox 360. I also had a load of digital currency expiring soon after the conversion and now I can spend it on even more RB DLC as there are no games I wanted.

I really had no reason before now as I was happy with my PS4, but as the only way to keep my DLC is an Xbox One and the only reason I kept my 360 is for Rock Band, it just all makes sense...

If only they made it possible to transfer The Beatles over too.

I should be happy since i've bought songs for the PS3 , but i'm in europe and given how the recent dlc nonsense of DOA5 happenned , i'm not confident they'll be able to manage my 300+ dlc song list properly.

I hope all this dlc will be on the rockband store and not throught the PSN..

That damn currency conversion.

Before it, MS points didn't expire (with the exception of free promo points) and after the conversion Microsoft Wallet doesn't expire. But anything that converted does? I'm going to be extremely annoyed by this for awhile.

The Rock Band store just fetches data from PSN, it's not its own individual storefront.

Yeah, I feel bad for SCEE victims. They haven't gotten any of this year's RB DLC up, and it's been ~5-6 months since Rocksmith's PS4 launch and they still don't have legacy content up.

Having only ever played Guitar Hero, not Rock Band, can I just pick up a guitar and play, or do I need to have friends for each of the instruments?

Yeah, people ran with this too early.

What sort of solutions to cross-platform DLC are there and how logistically feasible would they be? Also, how do you know how willing they are to address them or how hard they're trying to work with the console manufacturers behind the scenes to allow it?

Xbox One purchase is now completely justified! Over 2000 DLC to transfer when this baby comes out, the initial install process is going to take forever!

Oh, also a free track by Frank Turner available now? Grabbing that too! Great song off of a good album.

All my DLC is on PS3 so it should be no trouble transferring it to PS4.

Hope they support GH accessories though, still have my Aerosmith guitar lying somewhere.

I'd love for a new Rock Band that uses a real guitar like Rocksmith. I don't think I could go back to a cheap plastic instrument after using the real thing.

I know it's not Harmonix's fault, but a lot of us went from 360 to PS4 and would have to spend either $350 for an Xbox One or $350+ to rebuy all of our old DLC. That is just too high a cost of entry on top of the game itself.

Just pick your intrument and have fun .

Don't kill my hopes .jpg

Great news! I switched from 360 to PS4, so I think I'm out of luck when it comes to DLC, but it's terrific that all the DLC will transfer over. I loved the series last-gen and can't wait to get back into it.

Omg, Harmonix how I love you so! Who could have called that the songs and the instruments would carry over?!? These guys are so in tune with their audience.

This move greatly favors Microsoft as even though I'd rather have it on ps4, I just have way too much dlc to start over.

Hopefully they allow guitar hero instruments though because that's what I have. Seriously gh strat>rb strat

The only thing I could possibly see happening to help with all the people who switched platforms is for Harmonix to announce a subscription DLC service. I hope someone asks them about that.

I'm sure it won't but it would be cool if all the songs from the previous games were included with this one (the discs). I didn't dip too much into DLC so I'm not worried about that really since I played them all on the 360 and I have a PS4 now.

The only thing i think harmonix can do about the cross dlc problem, is to release those songs as dlc bundle at a big discount. But that would probably mean a new licensing agreement with artist, which would introduce new headaches.

Awesome news! So happy to see Rock Band coming back. Don't have an Xbox One yet, but that will be changing with this news. Surprised I didn't pick one up yet anyway, so it doesn't really bother me much that I'll have to get one to use all the DLC I bought. Really hoping my ION drums will work right away or that I'll at least be able to buy a new drum brain for it to work. Now I just need to buy another pedal since my good one stopped working a few months ago. Rock Band is back!

So happy to read about this this morning. Can't wait to see what they do with this. Amplitude and Rock Band 4 this year? Yes pleaseee.

Can't wait for this.

Now we need some Enter Shikari, then Rock Band will be complete <3

Oh my gosh, you're so on the ball! Arguing With Thermometres, Zzzzonked, or Jonny Sniper would be great additions

Throw in some (more) Coheed and Cambria, too, and it'll have all my money

I understand the frustration, but what exact solutions are you referring to? I can't imagine MS or Sony have that functionality in place, or would be eager to spend a significant amount of time implementing functionality to allow it, encouraging more customers to leave their ecosystems.

I can only dream of it happening with an incredible amount of consumer pressure and perhaps a ruling from some consumer rights ombudsman.

Seems that Microsoft should be in debt to Harmonix once this game comes out

MS and HMX have always had a good relationship. I'm sure the abrupt pulling of Kinect hurt it some but between working with them on the Rock Band Network and Dance Central I would not be surprised to see something come of their past relationship.

I exported Rock Band 2 not even a full 2 months ago, though this is on 360. You need a new copy or a manual code.

I think the offer was for the free 20-track pack that you got with RB2 when it came out. I think the export is still live, albeit done through RB3 itself.

Thanks. So it looks like the best way to get the previous on-disk songs is to buy used copies of RB1 and 3 and a new copy of RB2? Not sure why RB3 is so pricey for PS3.

Used to play RB on 360, but I stopped after RB2 and only bought around 100 DLC songs, so I'm ok making the switch to PS4. Just seems like a hassle to import previous disk based tracks.

I've never played a musical game like this the past generation. This made me hyped but then I read the FAQ about the lack of Rock Band on Wii/Wii U wich are the only consoles I have... well damn :(

Edit: But I hope that by the time Rock Band releases I will have a PS4 so yeah :)
