Rock Band 4 announced for PS4 and Xbox One

So many cynics in here... Were you guys GH fans or something?

I will buy DLC for this game as long as they keep releasing it. Same as the last 3 titles.

It's absolutely awesome that they are doing right by their customers and securing old DLC a and instruments. I imagine it's a lot of legwork.

they havent been the fastest at updating dance central spotlight with legacy dlc, and that has substatially less dlc than this.. i do hope they can fix that here with this. with 2000 tracks though, im not sure. my only fear is that they will shaft spotlight owners by focusing on this

Even if they "only" manage to get the hardest of core players back, this will be successful. People love Harmonix and are beyond loyal and the DLC will be solid for them for years again.

As it stands now, I think they get that audience and a good chunk of casuals back.
They won't get the 'hardest of core players back' if it isn't supporting the modes many of them played.

I'll bet the market for pro guitar / keys is minuscule. And it likely takes a disproportionate amount of manpower to chart them. I'm all for anything that ensures their long term viability as a studio/product.

This is tough for me because all my shit is on 360, and I went PS4. I don't want to buy anything new again; I don't want to be out all those songs I bought as well.

True,
though, they shouldn't go their traditional Pro mode direction if they choose to make Pro Guitar, they need to go USB Cable+ real guitar, like Rocksmith. I just don't know how they could pull it off, Rocksmith kind of needs all that screen real-estate for one player, so they can see everything clearly.

That is a dilema, but I imagine it depends on how many songs you have, how fast Harmonix ports the DLC, how much you might play RB4, and how much it costs to get an X1.

If you have like 300 songs, I'd say just get an X1. It's a great system, and will be worth it just for RB DLC. Then you can play all the X1 exclusives too. I'd probably suggest buying used anytime between now and this summer from craigslist when used prices dwindle, you might be able to get one for like $200. Prices will pick up again when it gets closer to Christmas.

Oh yeah. This is nice. The series and genre needed a long break and this year is about a good time for a revival. Haven't played these games for more than two years now.

cross platform DLC doesnt impact me personally because i had the previous games on my PS3...but for my 360 friends that have migrated to the PS4 for this gen....yikes,,,

hopefully they can work something out to allow it with a one time fee or something...

We get it, Raist. You are upset about stuff. Don't let it cloud logical thinking.
While yes, I'm upset ... I don't think it's clouding my reasoning at all. If anything, my logic is sound.

You're positing this game could be successful even if they only get the 'hardest of core players back'. The problem with that line of thinking is that there is a known intersection of pro mode play when talking about such people.

So the question becomes will those hardcore players purchase another iteration (assuming they even have an XBone/PS4 currently), even if it doesn't support some of their current content and instruments, and apparently has no intention of making new content for it?

Certainly some will, if only for new songs (since it doesn't look like new content will work in RB3). The question is how many? If they at least get the drums right by supporting the MIDI adapter (or make a new one), then I can see them getting a decent chunk of that demo.

It doesn't really work that way. If you've been a big spender on songs in the past, it's likely you will remain one in the future.

If you're a big spender you can afford another console.

They don't say anywhere that cross-platform DLC is never happening. They just said it isn't a priority and it isn't really up to them...

As long as the game is the same resolution on both console I will be okay with the Xbox One version, I guess.

Doesn't sound confirmed to me. A big yes or no would be nice.

Do you really think that MS or Sony would say 'Yeah you can transfer the DLC you bought on our previous console by logging into our system through your PS4/One'? Unless Harmonix sets up a site where you log in through your MS/Sony profile and click some buttons to choose your next console.

As I said, I'm fine with them not making new content (of kickstarting it). I'm talking about the myriad content I and others own ... that they're disingenuously pretending doesn't exist even though they are stating your DLC and instruments will work.

Again though, an olive branch will be to at least have the MIDI adapter work for drums. If not, they're spitting in our faces given the claims being made.

In the Giant Bomb interview , they address they want to appease both the casual crowd and the "hardcore score-chasing" crowd which they said they did not support well enough last time.

It's a good listen:

I'll listen to it soon, thank you.

They say it's up to MS and Sony. In other words, it's never happening. This is going to sell a bunch of Xbox Ones.

I'm not sure if its been mentioned, but the way the existing DLC will work is this:

RB4 releases, with a bunch of existing DLC, if you already have purchased the DLC on your account, you can download it for free. It will NOT be all existing songs at once. Instead, as the weeks/months go on, they will release new DLC along with more of the existing DLC. Again, if you have the existing already, you get to download the RB4 versions for free.

The DLC cannot transfer over from past generation to this generation. Instead, the system can check your purchase history and then apply credit.

Same boat. I'm just going to wait and see how this plays out. I'm not sure if I can see myself buying an Xbox One for just one game. My giant collection of 360 songs aren't going anywhere.

Honestly, you can just keep playing Rock Band 3 on your Xbox 360 ... with keyboards and pro guitar support.

I'm excited, but what exactly is Rock band 4 going to bring to the table? Obviously, another giant song list, but what else? Graphics?

I'm definitely a member of the score-chasing crowd, and used to compete in Guitar Hero tourneys back when it was the huge thing. Couldn't be happier with this announcement. While I thought I wasn't going to buy one of these games again, I'll definitely be one of the guys shelling out money for the huge box of peripherals. Rock Band 2 is my favorite game of all time, but I did not like the direction of RB3 as a more party focused game (with a largely easy setlist barring 2 or 3 songs). Hoping they really spend time to create a great song list with this one on-disc.

Sucks that my primary console went from Xbox 360 to PS4. Gonna have to repurchase DLC. I hope they create a subscription plan for this in the future.

I still got my old rock band guitar and have been meaning to play this again.

Make a cheap Xbox bundle Microsoft and I'm in.

I just don't really understand what there is left to say with this franchise. I loved Rock Band, but I think I would have preferred a spiritual successor instead.

Bummer that you can't transfer 360 > ps4 or ps3 > x1. I spent a ridiculous amount of money on songs on the 360 but no longer own a X1.

Might need to buy a X1 again.

Mmmmmmm, yes. It's been a good long while since Activision ran the music genre to the ground and by proxy damaged people's willingness for the other franchises in the genre. It's about time we saw Rock Band 4 getting revived here. Looking forward to the good times to come.

I'm not sure I understand the distinction. :s

Just pointing out that the existing DLC files (RB, RB3 versions) will not be used. That new files are being created (converted?) for RB4. So when they talk about bringing over your existing DLC, it's not like it's all going to work day 1. Instead, people will have to wait until the RB4 version of their DLC is put up to download.

I hope the fact that my Rock Band DLC is spread over multiple accounts (since Rock Band Network wasn't available in Europe) doesn't mess with the conversion process.

I have a feeling that you'll only get the DLC songs you previously purchased free on the same gamertag/PSN ID

If that's the case, they really need to get sites to fix the misinformation / ambiguity out there

From Engadget:
All your previously purchased content and any songs you ripped from previous Rock Band games to sequels will work in Rock Band 4, from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4. It's two-thousand something songs. No joke.
No one who reads such statements are going to assume it will work as you have defined.

I think what is left to say is "There are still millions of whales out there who will spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on DLC and we can get filthy, stinking rich." ;)

I wish Harmonix could inlcude a real guitar mode, plug in a real tone guitar cable, like Rocksmith, and play along.

Buying plastic instruments again does not spike any interest in me...

Well, considering we cannot transfer files from the previous generation systems to the current, not sure what Engadget is saying.

The only other way I could see is that if Harmonix has all 2000 files up for download day one?
