There have been numerous instances of "single winners" in the video game market.



The NES completely dominated the 3rd gen console market. It didn't have a real competitor until the Sega Genesis in the following gen.

Did the console market collapse? No.




Nintendo completely dominated the handheld market in the 4th, 5th, and 6th gens with the Game Boy / Game Boy Color / Game Boy Advance.

The first real competitor to the Game Boy line was the Sony PSP.

Did the handheld market collapse? No.




The Sony PS2 completely dominated the 6th gen console market.

Did the console market collapse? No.




Based on history, it's clear that the PS4 dominating the others won't have any significant effect on the health of the market.

Sony's choices resulted in a console that is the default platform to play multiplat titles on and now they are reaping the rewards of that. In our Internet gaming bubble it is easy to lose touch with what the mass market values and fail to realize that things obsessed over here like certain exclusives might not carry much weight at all in the real world.

Their competitors on the other hand made poor choices and misjudged the market and are now also reaping what they sowed.

Nope. PS2 era was complete domination and it was cool. May have made Sony misstep with the PS3 but they probably wouldn't fuck it up again. The only thing I feel multiple competitors are necessary for is pushing things forward.

Yes, Its just generally fun. It promotes Co-op play. And it works well regardless of the skill level of the other people you play with.

Most Co-op games you are either boxed out or steam rolled if you are low level. In Hell Divers leveling up matters, but you wont be shunned. Go check out the [OT]

I dunno, but maybe 300k+ in a week when bloodborne's released?
Maybe 250k for FF type 0?

Wouldn't be surprised if it hits over 1m in march alone.

uhh why not both? In fact that is almost guaranteed. They will promote the hell out of Batman may, june, july; move on to MGSV august, september, uncharted promotion october, november.
 
MGS5 would push ps4 without a single marketing dollar. It is heavily associated with playstation. I would do anything to lock down Batman.
Of course they will do both.

That was the whole ethos behind the Ps4 design, its no accident and many people see this.

System sellers are the big sellers, the CODs, FIFA's, GTA 5's and if Ps4 generally runs the big games objectively 'better' and most people know that then its game over. One this is accepted and momentum starts...that's it.

And no we cannot look back at historical consoles and say the best hardware did not always win, its 2015 and with strong social media the market is more aware.

Be most assured that i didn't mean 'ensared' by tricking. I only own a PS4 as a next gen console, i love it lots. My point is that there are markets that will run with it and turn it into an unstoppable train, and so far, PS4 has become that the console to do that globally like its other predecessors(besides PS3 in America and UK)

Xbox became a poisoned brand for many after their DRM situation, i know it became the case for me.

I always tried to defend MS about locking apps behind paywalls, about not offering the games PS+ did, about not investing in exclusives and coasting off third parties for years in the second half of the 360's life. I was just really into Xbox. I was waiting with baited breath to get the next Xbox.

Although the PS3 gradually became a great console to me, i still wanted the next xbox like nobodies business before we heard anything about it. But it became clear to me with the fiasco's leading up to the One's launch that the bone was just not a proposition i wanted to invest in with MS's mindset, and i won't change on that.

I don't see a Destiny level push for Batman Arkham Knight yet, despite having some meaty exclusive DLC for it.

I don't understand why. Sony have come back since ~2009 almost on nothing but games. Not many gimmicks (not any that worked at least) just putting out some great 1st Party games and maintaining good relations with the 3rd Party publishers.

I mean, if X1 would be taking the world by storm with its Kinect driven, always online vision, yeah, that would be disturbing. But currently Sony is "winning" with the game library. If I were Nintendo, I'd be ecstatic.
