On that note, I remember seeing Nimoy some years ago (before/after Savers started to air I think) actually say he considered the dub versions a separate entity in a way (I forget the exact phrasing but it's to that effect of it being different from the JP version)(

I stand by what I said, watch both and compare them/decide what you prefer.

No different from having sudden reasons for the original kids not being able to go with the 02 kids even though they can when there is a reason for them to (ie their Digimon are in trouble).

It's just like "Yeah, sure, go and do your thing and call us if you have any trouble"

We'll find out how they handle it when the series starts.

It's been a while since I've watched 02. What was actually the reason that the original kids didn't always go? Was it really that they just trusted the new kids to take care of it? I'm probably misremembering but I thought they also couldn't travel there without someone with a new digivice.

Easy, they move to different schools.

Yeah good point.

Yeah, a D-3 was needed to open the gate (although gates could sometimes open on their own, which was usually how Mimi wound up getting there).

But I've been rewatching 02 recently, and there's a frustrating amount of episodes where Koushirou is around but just sticks back in the computer lab for no good reason and leaves the other characters to go to the Digital World.

Koushiro's only role in 02 unfortunately was just for plot exposition. Its really sad considering how he was one of the best characters in the previous season, and they don't involve him more in any way.

I had no idea the music was changed for the dub /noob.

You are in for a treat.

I thought that was so no teachers or students would accidentally walk in and find out what was going on. Though I didn't really like that either.

It takes itself much more seriously, and the voice actors are superb. It also has a GOAT OST.

It's a different experience, hell if you have time watch both versions and see how you feel (you can compare them a lot easier with back-to-back viewings lol).

Love the dub but one of the biggest things you will miss is not hearing the OST (including the Op/Insert of Brave Heart/Butterfly) which you may want to hear in preparation for the new series assuming you're going to watch it subbed.

Also thanks to the JP version, I learned that "I wish" was sang by Mimi's VA which she also sang in that episode with Shogungekomon. She has a great voice :D

Ok thanks! I may just do that, at least for the first few eps, just to see what the differences really are first hand. I do <3 the original cast cus they're so nostalgic for my childhood but if the Japanese version really is a different expereince then I'm certainly interested in doing a comparison at the very least!

You're missing out on quite a bit.

For starters, the OST for the original version is incredible. It does a really great job at building the mood throughout the whole series, with a lot of very memorable tracks (as well as some great vocal pieces). Additionally, the Japanese version takes itself a lot more seriously than the dubbed version does. Not just in terms of the dub having lame puns, but there are many scenes which were played very seriously originally and are filled with jokes in the dub. Beyond that, the characters are pretty different. Pretty much all of the characters were altered in the English version. Mimi was the one who was butchered the most (god, I'm still mad about that), but most of the characters are changed quite a bit by the dub, and the relationships between the characters are also altered in some key places.

That's in addition to all of the censorship and weird changes the dub made on a per episode basis. It's fundamentally a completely different show that just happens to share mostly the same animation.

Hmm ok then thank you, this has really opened my eyes! I guessed there would be changes as per most dubs but to go as far to say they're different shows has me intrigued. Anyone watch the dub first and then the sub? Were the changes jarring as personality differences in the characters is obviously something quite significant.

Okay, I got rid of a lot of the imperfections. Still needs a little work though.

I've got to say, I'm liking this art style more and more as time goes on. It seems to capture the whimsical nature of Adventure nicely.

The Digimon also look cuter for some reason. And I really love cute things.

Widescreen higher resolution.

Think I'm done. :/

Thanks! Finally got a new desktop pic. :)

Loving things so far, I hope they're not too lazy with the animation. But I'm really excited for the new season. This is the best year ever lol.

edit: if they used the final version of butterfly as the opening theme...i would cry.

Hmmm if I were to re-watch the first season before this hits, where should I go? Funimation only has the second season and that's all I found.

Netflix has the first 3 seasons, Japanese (under Digimon Adventure) and English (under Digimon: Digital Monsters). Hulu has English versions up to Frontier, and Japanese for Tamers. If you have either of those.

Not a popular opinion, but I did enjoy watching Season 2, warts and all. The concept of Armour Digivolution was pretty cool, & both Raidramon & Magnamon were two of my favourite creatures, along with Veemon.

I don't think its an unpopular opinion. What you mentioned was one of the many good things that 02 had. I think it had some novel concepts in the multiple evolution lines and fusions, and Ken's story was undoubtedly heart touching. its just that when compared to its predecessor, or successor, its faults seem magnified..

02 did have the highest ratings of all the Digimon shows iirc.

I enjoyed 02 as well but it doesn't stop me from complaining about it haha :)

Just like if I enjoy Tri but my favourite characters get shafted again or things are dropped that shouldn't be dropped. I'll have no problem complaining about it even if I enjoy the series as a whole :)

Ok so I got my Hikari/Takeru figures and I'm quite disappointed. From the outside they look great but once you open them and try to put them together... not so good.

Tailmon's tail snapped off (and it looks like it can go back in but it doesn't stay in longer than 2 seconds) quite early on when putting them together and the small bit that Takeru's head is meant to fit into on his body snapped when I tried to change heads (it's not easy to change their heads)

Takeru's Head with the thing inside it (that should be attached to his body):

Takeru's body without the thing that allows you to attach his heads:

Tailmon's behind and tail:

Takeru I had trouble just fitting one head on let alone taking one off. Tailmon however, I barely touched. Just put her onto the orange platform you stick her on and then poof. Tail came off.

Either I got a bad batch or whatever glue they used to keep things in place is crap.

Hikari is the only one unscathed from this. :/ so yeah overall very disappointed.

I might try glueing them back together but if I do that, I'll be stuck with one head most likely for Takeru.

edit: I probably won't be able to return them either to amiami because even if it's because the quality of the pieces isn't great, they will probably consider it primarily my fault:

http://www.amiami.com/top/page/t/faq.html#7

Aka damage by customer (even though the Tail thing wasn't my fault and the Takeru thing, I was just doing what we were told we could do ie change his heads between his one with Patamon and his one with Picodevimon. I don't believe I was too rough with Takeru.)

what do you guys think? Worth contacting amiami about it?

Ah that sucks. My first print taichi was fine from amiami... Either production quality dropped or its a bad batch =/. My & - arts wargreymon OD had an issue with moulds in his hand +shoulder though.
Amiami reply quickly to questions, but unless you can prove a manufacturer defect I doubt they'll replace it - which is fair but not great. No harm in asking though I guess.

It's hard to prove yeah but might as well try. If not, I might try glueing but like I said, it will then leave me unable to change Takeru's head unless I can get the attachment thing out.

But yeah, like you said, no harm in asking.

Also in other news, my Cyber Sleuth copy got sent out also from amiami. Looking forward to it :D.

The OT will be up later today or early tomorrow probably since it's almost Thursday Japan time. (side note: Japanese sites make it notoriously hard to look up Kanji you don't know quickly because the sites are in flash making it impossible to copy/paste. Still isn't stopping me from doing what I can)

Just got yours in today? Hopefully that means mine will be in today (I always use small package unregistered, cause I'm cheap :x) I'll let you know how it goes when it comes in, though. My Taichi and Yamato had no issues, so it's disappointing to hear that this batch has some.

I hope yours is better than mines. No idea how the Takeru one broke (like I said, I put on his other head and when I tried to put back on his happy default one, the thing it was on stayed in the head...) but you'll quickly find out if your Tailmon has the same issue as mines. I mean it straight up came off while I was putting it onto the stand/trying to put Hikari on the stand. I barely touched it.

Everytime I put it back in, it comes out 2 seconds later. :/

These are the first figures I've bought outside of Miku for my fiancee and game CEs that come up figures but I won't let it sour me too much on figure buying in the future :)

I got more into buying (non-Pokemon) figures just last year :x Yet another collection to add to games/anime/manga/etc :/ (I like too many things!)

This kind of reminds me of my experience with my Mewtwo D-Arts. I was trying to take a photo of him holding an energy ball-thing, and one by one, his fingers started popping off :/ They could reattach but it was a HUGE pain. One would go on, but then the other one would fall off again, and so on :/ I still think it's an awesome looking figure, but will keep it in the box until I have patience in the future.

She hasn't sung a solo ending since Tamers, though (although Tri should definitely change that). I was disappointed that she didn't sing any songs for Savers or Xros Wars.

But yeah, her and Wada Kouji basically are Digimon music. Their music has been a major part of my life for 15 years at this point. Digimon has always been blessed with some great vocal pieces.
Mhmm can someone summarize how different the characters are from the sub and the dub?

That would be quite a list :p Just a couple off the top of my head:

Adventure

-Mimi: not as whiny
-Jou: not as paranoid/panicky
-Apocalymon: not angsty (AT ALL)
-Etemon: not Elvisy

02
-Daisuke/Davis: not as annoying

You really need to check it out on your own to see.

Asked this in another thread, almost finished the Cyber Sleuth OT and should be up in an hour or two.

Any good OT titles, only one i have is from a few pages ago:

|OT| Coming to a store 6,300 miles from you.

Any better ones before I use this mean spirited one :P

|OT| Digimentary, my dear Watmon

(That's all I got)

So, there's definitely at least one reason to prefer the dub.

What about:

|OT| Digivolving in Cyber Space

Best one I could think of myself without making some cringe worthy joke that only I'd laugh at lol.

Probably the first person I know that actually prefers the Elvis Etemon.

And I'm the second! :-P

I just finished my rewatch of 01. The series still holds up beautifully to this day. I'm tempted to start 02 but blech...the greatness of 01 just makes 02 feel even worse.

I like both versions. I can understand why they went with Elvis for his personality in the english version. Makes it more relatable overseas but at the same time, I do love seeing Etemon go all "Love Serenade"

Honestly, they aren't that much different outside of the voice sounding like Elvis in the english version.

Imo Digimon voices in English version >>>> Digimon voices in japanese version

I was like "Why does Greymon still sound like a kid instead of a damn badass dinosaur?" Kind of how I didn't like MegaGargomon still sounding like a midget.

No, it doesn't. Your voice doesn't depend on your mental state, man-children don't sound like 13 year olds.

I've watched the subbed version long enough to have it make sense to me. You don't need to sound big and bad to be imposing. Digimon Adventure movie barely needed any dialogue to make it sound "big and bad".
