Final Fantasy XV Demo Previews/Impressions Thread

You know, I'd actually love to see a talented artist on here try redesigning the FFXV cast in a way that would appeal to most western gamers, just for fun. I think Cor (minus the ridiculous boots :D) and all the other characters from the E3 trailer are actually very western-compatible already. The main cast and their clothes are the biggest hindrance.

I think the problem is everybody get the joke nowadays.

You know the outfits are totally fine and it's part of the whole yakuza-esque thing with the kingdoms imo, characters aren't defined by their clothing but rather by their dialog and interactions.

The outfit talk is tiring already with so much positive and worthy discussions to have.. We are still debating things that's been known for 9 years.

People who complain about the "boyband" look of XV need to spend a Friday night in Shibuya, Tokyo to realize that these are some of the most realistic FF designs in recent memory. With the exception of maybe shirtless-Gladio, the XV cast very much resembles the stylistic choices of Japanese male youth. They are very style and fashion conscious, much more so then the average western male.

I wish the jokes would end.

I like the FFXV cast, but man: I really, really hope there will be other party members as well, even though I know they declined. Different party members being able to cook different dishes for example (because they are from a different background or something), different party members fighting with other styles and so on.

Yeah I hope we get some non "human" characters as well. God I want this game to be all that I want it to be.

Huge open world.
a crazy amount of non story missions and side quests.
Secret characters that you can acquire if you are lucky, think gogo from FFVI.
150+ hours.
a massive amount of gear and weapons.
awesome magical spells.
Bosses that are awesome and even some hidden ones that are optional.

Am I setting myself up for disappointment?

FFXV looks like a melange of past FFs. You got the more modern looking world of FFVII and FFVIII, but also the more classic FF worlds of the pre-FFVII. Hell, Garula's based on the exact FFV designs, and the Goblin's based on the FFII designs, which that "style" of Goblin hasn't been seen since FFV. While goblins have appeared SINCE FFV(FFVII, FFIX, FFXI, FFXIII, FFXIV), they've never looked like that again.
To your point, Tabata said they were inspired directly from many of Amano's original designs for the monsters - which just has me so excited! If a FF can blend the nostalgia of the past with evolutions of gameplay and technology, I think it's a perfect mix!

FABULOUS PURPLE HAIR
Not only that, how his hair waves out. Like Cidney(yes, it's Cidney, not Cindy, Square Enix!), I'm loving hair that's not straight. Too much damn straight hair. Either the guys got spiky hair, or the girls got long straight hair. I'm tired of that(both in FF and in real life trend). Gimme curls and waves. Fuck YEAH!

Preach, besides they should express their vision and not be constrained to past FF norms or better yet western standards.

I think the only safe bet for disappointment is the bolded one.

I love the look of the cast. Bunch of fashionable ass mofos who all seem like they have distinct personalities. The cast is half my interest in the game tbh.

For real though the Roen clothing designs are pretty terrible and the "high fashion" clashes strongly with the environment. You can't even logically justify it with the unexpected nature of the journey unless you expect me to believe that a change of clothes is completely out of the question in all the numerous stops they make on the way. Not that logic should play a role in this- it's guys killing giant monsters with swords bigger than they are after all. I just think the clothing itself is repulsive.

Character designs are fine otherwise, though.

Unrelated, but I hope the man who looks like "the uncle who's totally the traitor" is actually not a traitor after all.

I agree that XIV has a lot of them, but a lot of Final Fantasy fans don't like MMO's. I loved XI too and have had to hear for years that it isn't a "real Final Fantasy". As for XIII I actually liked FFXIII on it's own. I wasn't overly fond of the sequels though. There's just something about XV thus far that seems to be a throwback to what made the series what it was in the PS1 era, even if the combat is different.
Oh then that makes sense and is totally fine.

I think you make some great points. I look forward to seeing what they do in the full game with regards to most of these things and if the actual game captures that essence or not. For me, I feel like it's really far away from that feeling, but it doesn't bother me as much when I think of it as a realistic Kingdom Hearts spinoff with more minor FF tropes, because that's what it still feels like to me at this point in time. That could change though.

I do like the exploration, but am concerned with how devoid of interest it all seems outside of the visuals.

It's red... cause Keiji Fujiawara always voices red-haired characters in SE games. B)

Also the cast looks fine, you guys are crazy.
Yeah, I love how in making every one of the playable characters dress in black, the designers have crafted a unique visual identity for the game. The non-playables look fantastic too.

As someone that loves optional boss fights, I hope we get some of these.

I want to be able to find an out of the way dungeon I never bothered to look into before, go in, and get my shit pushed in by a freakishly strong optional boss.

Any reason why you think we wont be getting any secret characters?
When's the last time that happened in a mainline? (not being rhetorical, actually asking)

I would love to be pleasantly surprised with a secret character, but it seems like such a massive investment in this day and age, that players could easily completely miss.

VII was the last time, IIRC.

Quina could be optionally recruited in Disc 1 of IX if you knew what to do, but they join anyway in Disc 2.

Most of those are confirmed, but it's pretty much sure that there won't be other permament party members (too much extra work and how would they even handle travelling by car with more than 5 chars :D). Main story is confirmed to be around 40h by Tabata.

Thank god I'm missing most of these design talks.

Anyway, Type-0 had kinda secret characters that joined your party, but you couldn't play as them.

Tabata and Nomura also joined your party, but they were not secret characters =P

I hope Shimomura reaches for the stars with the final boss theme. I love me some Final Fantasy final boss themes. They're always incredible.

FFVIII's is probably my favorite next to FFVI.

He looks like he might be Gladio's dad.
I'm thinking this too! At first I thought he could be Regis' bro, but when you see this guy's face paired up with Gladiolus, they definitely look like they could be related. And, it wouldn't be an "out there" idea, considering Gladiolus's family has a history of protecting the royals of Lucis.

That being said, I kinda wonder if Gladio's dad has a similar relationship to Regis as Gladio does to Noctis. That whole thing(and the possiblity) intrigues me, the bonds of brotherhood. I wonder if they plan on drawing parallels between certain characters. Remember, they liken the royalty to the yakuza/mafia, and family and loyalty is big within the mafia(well, within royalty too). It's why I'm interested in the other royal families. I can see something interesting being played out with friendship, loyalty, the bonds of not only "brothers" or lovers, but bonds that connect through generations. There's some interesting shit in there.
