I figured someone would bring this up, but it's the usual case of Araki forgetting stuff or neglecting stuff just for the sake of tension.
Besides Joseph was prob. confident in himself being able to beat him without using Hamon/Ripple.

Wouldn't he need to touch the glass anyway to use the ripple? The water would have overflowed after he removed his hand.

Also, maybe D'Arby would have been able to see him use it, which would have probably been considered as cheating: it's like using a stand.

That's obvious cheating.

Yeah I just went back and watched the episode where Joseph uses Ripple on a Coke bottle cap and the bottle is covered in lightning. No way that would have gone unnoticed!

Smokey could see Joseph faintly glowing back when he did the bottle cap trick. It's likely that a lifelong hustler like D'Arby, even if Dio never told him about the Ripple, would have realized that something was fishy if Joseph suddenly touched the glass and something strange started happening to the liquid/he could faintly see sparking. Then he'd either call Joseph out on using some kind of trick, or just wait a few seconds for the Ripple to run out and the liquid to overflow, which would count as Joseph's loss.

Have you guys forgotten what hamon looks like?
Electricity EVERYWHERE, do you think D'arby wouldn't have noticed?

Holy shit, I was doubting it, but people hyping this episode were right: this is the best one I've seen in a long time, and potentially my favorite episode in part III as a whole. Mind games are what I seek, and this was all about that. No weird asspulls or conventional coincidences; it was purely about one person trying to outthink the other in the most subtle and tricky ways. It's interesting that one of my favorite episodes in this part has been the most grounded, by far.

It also brought out the Joseph cleverness I've wanted to see more of. How he acted in this episode definitely reminded me of his part II self, instead of the idiot goof he's been depicted as so often recently. He even got to use some of his Hamon knowledge for his bet, kinda.

Fantastic episode. I'm really looking forward to the next one.

That was pretty good, it could have been a bit tighter with the pacing but it was mostly fine. I loved the animation for Osiris turning people into chips, how he'd stretch and knead them before slapping his hands together. They also did a great job with including a lot of stills and poses from the manga this episode. The one thing I wasn't super keen on was how old D'arby sounded. I'm mostly used to his voice from the games where his "GOOD" was a lot more energetic and loud but here it's a lot plainer which is disappointing.

Wait a second, why didn't Joseph use the Ripple to keep the liquid steady? Its been a while since I watched the second part but couldn't they walk on water with the Ripple?

That'd be too obvious of a cheat. Pretty sure since D'arby has a Stand he could see Hamon fully with all the electricity too.

I think D'arby could've had a better VA but the one we got is fine.

Obie somehow placing the chocolate without anyone noticing reminds me of all the bullshit Joseph pulled without the villains noticing.

Banjo Ginga did a great job I thought. Him being too old is a matter of interpretation and appreciation I'd say. his portrayal of D'Arby as an experienced master gambler is pretty on point imo.

Yup, as suspected the OVA was way better in every aspect but character design.

I'm very surprised
Shooting Dio
wasn't in this episode considering how accurate david has been so far.

Awful episode, I hate when anime advance morally corrupt protagonists and antagonistic game theory ideals. I hope JJBA goes back to its former glory or else we would have seen yet another writer resort to bad writing.

The Jojo protags are morally corrupt? I don't think they killed a single antagonist, and many of them totally deserved to get their shit pushed in.

I totally just realized at the beginning that Kakyoin still hasn't returned. He STILL recovering his eyes at the hospital?

Also yes, Hamon would've been way too obvious, even if he placed his hand under the table or something.

Pretty sure Steely Dan, Rubber Soul, the orangutan, Devo, Hanged Man user, and N'Doul are fucking dead

Am I supposed to take this post seriously?

It's DTL, so no you're not.

Honestly Joseph is my favorite Jojo, but even then he didn't go out like Polnareff in this. D'Arby said it himself, Joseph had admitted defeat in his mind. In part 2 Joseph gets out of everything but while they don't show his thought process the entire time it wouldn't surprise me if there came a moment where he was like: Well fuck, nothing more I can do. Only to have a last second epiphany. The problem here is that with the way Osiris operates he doesn't have the chance for that.

I think the biggest bullshit is the fact that nobody noticed the chocolate being placed in the first place, not even Jotaro who was supposed to be watching D'Arby with Star Platinum. So yeah, D'Arby battle is a great one and while Part 3 hasn't been exactly kind to Joseph I think this made sense.

Most of the time they are put out of commission or "retired", no matter how hard the beatdown is. Mariah had every bone in her body broken, but she's still alive. The bigger villains usually get killed.

The animation, mood and atmosphere of this battle in the OVA really sets the tone for a fight this suspenseful. The garish colors of the new version just don't fit the battle. And the old D'arby VA was much better imo.

I far prefer the style and designs of the DP series to the OVAs. But everything else you're right about. OVAs will pretty much always be superior in production values though.

Let see for the Jotaro part, for now I liked how they handle the Joseph part more than the OVAs

the OVAs have this session too brief for building meaningful tension, but now the worrying part is.. the Jotaro's part in danger to felt dragged.

Yeah but that's with the titles coming in to explicitly say they're "retired." Without that clarification, I've assumed they're dead.

The OVAs clearly have the D'arby eps as the un-ambitious one before the big party tho.

D'Arby had me shook, pretty tense stuff. The chip book freaked me the fuck out.

That's exactly what i said, i was like wtf Jotaro.

lol but N'Doul killed himself

Oh my god, the episode delivered. I preferred the OVA for the most part, but that fucking ending was so much better in this version. I felt the tension at the end! Fuck!!! Shit was awesome.

I'm having trouble understanding this. Do you mean how they were saying "it isn't cheating unless you're caught?" If so, this asshole just cheated them and took their friend's soul. No way they should play fair.

D'arby has metal cheekbones or some shit, of course he's a stand user. Polnareff just made a Homer Simpson bet!!! Lol D'arby has a binder full of souls. Dat D'arby Engrish. This cheat off thing was pretty tense, can't wait for next week, D'arby is a tricky motherfucker.

Adding oil to the cup was blatant cheating and then old Joseph was proud of it, jotaru even allowed it as well. I dont think the chocolate thing was really cheating. Was hoping for a D'arby win as he seemed to play the most fair (nothing to sabatoge the other player unlike old joseph.

dude what

how can you not consider the chocolate cheating? barbie literally says "Its not cheating if I didn't get caught" eg "if jotaro had seen me apply the chocolate, it would have totally been busted for cheating"

lets not forget that Obie was the one to cheat first. Do you expect the protags to not cheat in return and thereby make it fair? you know what, even if he didn't cheat the protags would be justified in cheating because they're literally trying to rescue a man's soul.

Would you prefer that they win through the sheer power of their peerless friendship?

Yes, that's how DTL operates.

I just wanted Jotaro and Avdol just to punch that guy.
Maybe break one of his arms. Maybe one of his legs.

He'll still be alive just in pain.

And my word, I cracked up at that 30s segment of Joesph trying to put the final coin in. It just kept on going on.

If you guys liked this episode, next week's is going to be even better. This was just putting coins in a full glass and betting on rigged cat-eating behavior!

The high stakes poker is where it's at!

It was hilarious. D'arby got sick of waiting and just finger plungered the old mans soul out.

Finally this episode aired, and now I can give my thoughts in this thread when I read this part of the manga.

Joseph jobbed. Hard.

Really, instead of Joseph, Jotaro should have been the one who took the second seat. Joseph would see through the shit right after Jotaro loses his soul, and then it will play with his strengths. This is Joseph "I can see your shit" Joestar, and they can still do the "he's not in his prime" shtick if Jotaro loses his soul in the second seat.
