Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

Girlfriend got me a Sony SW2 for Christmas. What apps can you guys recommend?

Is Android Wear compatible with it or am I stuck with Sony's own system
Download watchit now. You can custom it to push any notification to your sw2. It is the most important sw2 app.
I like whereamI for novelty purposes. Basically Google maps on your wrist.
You should also download remote widget. You can push any widget you want to your sw2.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check these out!

Edit: Impressions -

watchit - Cool idea, but I've decided against it. The only notifications I really want is text messages, and I get those anyway.
whereami - Really cool, think I'll be keeping this one. Like you, it'll be mainly for novelty but still! Be cool to go for a drive and see a birds-eye view of where I am.
Remote Widget - I simply don't have enough apps with decent enough widgets to justify this. All my widgets are rubbish!

I can certainly see the use for Remote Widget though. So sad that the best apps / most useful apps for the device are not made by Sony.

why is facebook calendar sync so terrible with google calendar

I know that most people find it bothersome but it's the best way for me to keep up with birthdays and for some super weird reason only some facebook birthdays show up in google calendar.. wtf?

Android Wear 5.0.2. is being pushed out right now. Check for your device for updates

TheVerge reviews writes their feelings on Sony Smartwatch 3. I don't know what that article is but it's not a review. They still haven't revealed how exactly their battery life test is applied; somehow The Verge manages to get worse battery life with their Android wear devices than the other tech sites.

On the one hand The Verge writes rubbish 'reviews'. On the other hand Anandtech has yet to review any Android Wear watch. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . tech press is useless.

Wow, that's easily the best-looking Android Wear watch yet. Looks even better than the Moto 360. Really great design.

Are all the caucasians in that "Design" video actors? "I believe we have made a true watch" - who says that unless they're an actor reading off a script prepared by non-native English speakers.

Probably just a heavily scripted video. Don't think they're actors, but they're definitely reading off of a script.

That said, the watch looks great. But it will probably have one huge flaw like poor screen or bad battery life.

I've been borrowing a moto 360 from work to try out and I quite liked it, but it didn't really feel like a watch - I think the combination of so much screen with almost no bezel looks more like a gadget than a watch, and the odd placement of the strap with no lugs.

But I liked the notifications etc, so I bought an LG G Watch R from Amazon warehouse deals for £160. I replaced the strap with a Ritchie black metal band and that goes really well with it (although I did stab myself in the finger with the strap removal tool trying to get the pins out)

Are there any PC based watch face design tools? Watchmaker and facer seem nice but doing everything on my little nexus 4 is a pain, and being able to do it on a PC with a more graphical interface would be really nice.

I miss the pascual face from the moto 360 - loved the calendar events indicated around the edge - genius.

Damn, I had no idea this thread existed.

I got the Zenwatch, battery life has been great so far. Currently I have 72% remaining after being unplugged at 10am this morning.

I think it looks pretty too.

Planning on getting the metal strap Sony SmartWatch 3 now it's out. Don't suppose anyone knows any good UK deals on it, it seems to be quite a bit more money than the rubber strap ones?

So the Sony Smartwatch 3 is just 150€ today on Amazon France.

Have never bought something from there (I'm in Germany) but I would like to try one of those Smartwatches out. Price seems to be ok. What do you think?

I held off for a long time, which is impressive enough for me, but I just ordered the LG G Watch R. It was between that and the Asus ZenWatch. The ZenWatch having the heart rate monitor on the side and the round and p-oled screen from the LG put it ahead of the ZenWatch in my book.

I'd love some watchface and/or apps recommendations though, if you guys have any.

Hello! :)

I hope this is the right spot to post this, so here it goes:

A few days ago i got my self the LG W110 G Watch R :) I love it, everything is perfect (you know the stuff) but I have a question: Is there any way to keep my watch face ON all the time? and not have it entering black and white mode or as I call it safe mode face, after ~ 5/6 seconds? I know there is an option called Always-on screen but that doesn't have what I'm looking for.

Thanks :)

You can do it with my app AutoWear :)

Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZXy7CSrXkg&t=93

Let me know if you need help setting it up.

I don't understand what you mean, that watchface is Odyssey no? Odyssey has a setting called "Disable minimal ambient mode", and by enabling that, it won't turn on the black & white mode.

Got my LG G Watch R today. Looked great, worked fine, bit surprised it came with a 100% charge on first boot, since I've always been told Lithium-Ion batteries kept at 100% or 0% forever are pretty much done for rather quickly.

Anyways, updated the firmware, played around with some watchfaces and stuff, at 74% the watch shuts down. Try to boot it, shuts down again. Put it on the charger, and lo and behold it's on 1%.

Stayed on 1% for over an hour. Tried resetting the device, nothing worked, just stuck on 1%. Figured I wouldn't wait any longer to see if the issue would correct itself given how I read it's supposed to get a full charge in under two hours, so I just send it back and ordered a new one, so I guess I give it a second try tomorrow. Just my luck. Google searches brought up nothing, so it seems it's not a common problem at least, I guess it was accidentally charged at 100% in the factory.

Thank God I've grown more patient in my old age, that would have annoyed the crap out of me when I was younger :D

That said, was really enjoying the watch so far, looked and felt great. Can't wait to give it a proper go tomorrow.

Just got my SmartWatch 3 yesterday, have a couple of questions.

1. Is there a way to have it not light up when it "thinks" you're looking at it? Preferably I'd just want it to light up when I touch it or press the button or use OK Google or when a notification comes in.

2. Is there a "night" mode, where you can set it so that during certain hours it won't light up or vibrate unless the button is pressed?

On my Moto 360 i pull down from the top of the watch and swipe left and the option for theater mode comes up. Enable it and the screen will only turn on when you press the button. To not get notifications just set the watch interruptions to "none". You need the latest Android Wear update to use these though.

1. Turn off "tilt to wake screen" in Android Wear settings

2. Double press the crown for theater mode. Again to disable it. You'll probably have to mute the watch manually, which is simple.

Oh and another really urgent question that's just arisen: how do I set an alarm for 7:25? I only get offered times in 15 minute increments.

Right, serious question time guys, I keep looking at smart watches but I can't for the life in me figure out why I want one other than "They look cool".

What are some of your main day to day, and maybe less common but cool, uses for these things?

it is handy for cooking timers, or reminders in general. Hands covered in flour but I want to set a timer? 'ok google, set a 30 minute timer'. Done.

Also good for music control - skipping tracks while in the car I can do blind because I just have to hit the right side of the watch screen.

Getting a Belkin Wemo power switch today to have a play with - need to figure out how to control it. Autovoice and tasker should be ok for voice controls, but it'd be nice to have a button on the phone too.

Making my first custom watchface at the moment - wish watchmaker had a PC or even web version - quite fiddly doing it all on a small phone screen.

largely I use it as my assistant of sorts. on a day to day basis you'll probably want to remind yourself of something ot take a note. I do so everyday. Heck it might be shit as silly as "remind myself to pick up laundry at x time" or "take a note, buy x y z for groceries" but I've now barely user my phone for writing shit down for later during weekdays. I've been learning to cook too so saying "ok Google set a timer for x minutes" is great. Finally for controlling music hands free when I want a particular song it's great but you need a couple of apps to make that work. If I ever get a smart house I'll control lights with my watch as well.

finally during a meeting at work it's much less douchey to look at notifications in your watch than to take out your phone.

If you already set it up in Tasker you can simply add a shortcut on your homescreen to an existing Task. :)

You can even create a floating icon on your watch with AutoWear that calls the same task.

how do you do the latter one? Would be nice to have a hidden button on my custom watchface to turn the switch on/off. Using watchmaker on android.

Check this example. If you want to make it invisible check this one. Let me know if you need more help.

Edit: Check here to learn how to call an existing task with AutoWear.

thanks, will check it out. I'll get it working first on the phone and then add the watch in.

is there a good file hosting site where I can throw my watch face on? Have a pretty good draft in case anyone wants to take a look

I gotta get good with the watch face editors. Some of these look fantastic. It sounds like they'd make for good mini projects too
