Bloodborne Press Preview Impressions (16/03/2015)

Pre-install is on Sunday. This is madness, outside of Destiny this is the only game I have purchased digitally and hardcopies of.

Despite having it pre-ordered digitally, I'm looking for early physical copies myself. This weekend is one my lighter ones work load wise and I wouldn't mind spending more money to get the game early.

My point, and if I erred I apologize, was that I always got the feeling Sony was hesitant about a Souls-successor selling enough to justify its development cost.

It's sad that you feel pressured to apologize when you didn't say anything wrong.

I agree with you: the game's RPG elements have not been emphasized by the advertisements. This isn't a criticism of Sony or From. If the TV ads were the extend of my Bloodborne knowledge, I would think the game was a straight-up action game like GoW.

Well, since I apparently have to prove I'm not a troll (which, seriously, come the fuck on), here are my two Bloodborne preorders. I'm that hyped for the game.

My point, and if I erred I apologize, was that I always got the feeling Sony was hesitant about a Souls-successor selling enough to justify its development cost. I also got that feeling from Nintendo and Bayonetta for different reasons or Microsoft and Sunset Overdrive for different reasons. It was never about volume, I fully recognize they are advertising it, but it always felt to me like they were more confused about how to do it than trying to mislead people.

Since I'm wrong, I apologize. To who, I'm not really sure, but I apologize nonetheless. I definitely don't appreciate the bullshit about me being a troll.

I'll now bow out of discussion of this game on GAF, because it kind of fucking sucks to have people cast aspersions on you because you interpreted something differently and perhaps incorrectly, and I don't see that getting fixed because I've proved I spent enough money on it prior to this conversation.
Sony learnt their lesson after their awful job on Demon's Souls, and after looking at Dark Souls they've gone full guns blazing this time.

I would have said the same but I'm starting to think Bloodborne will beat Order now. The WoM and the reviews will certainly help but Order sales aren't the highest to begin with. BB is niche, but I don't think it's so niche to not be able to pull off 300k in the first month.

The Order is an interesting situation. If the internet is to be taken at face value (big if) then a lot of people who pre-ordered or even were going to purchase the game pulled out after realizing that the game was short and movie like.

Bloodborne is going to be a success but I see it as a slow burn. Yes it will have initial sales like mad from the enthusiast PS4 crowd. People I have seen are buying PS4's just to play this game so they exist. But I think that it will be steady and constant sales instead of a huge out the door rush.

But what do I know. I am not a sales forecaster for videogames. I am probably completely wrong on all thoughts dealing with this games sales.

Clicking through menus would be the world's most boring ad. The game is advertised as an action rpg I don't see what else they can do.

I agree with what you're saying. And typically, I wouldn't expect BB to out-do Order. But I think even with a slow-burn, doing 250 to 300k+ for BB doesn't seem unfeasible. At least, I hope not. I know the games are pretty limited in appeal, I just hope they aren't that limited.

I think we can all agree that this series is now way less "niche" than how it was back in the day when Demon's Souls came out, for better or worse. now you just need to say "from the Dark Souls guy/team" to get a lot of more people excited for the game.

I went back and checked quickly. I see one poster calling him out as "bs" and the others correcting him. Is correcting people now some wrong that you can't do on a message board?

I think he's being overly dramatic that he got called out for being wrong.
way overly dramatic, for no good reason whatsover and I'm not even sure why anyone would think that he was a 'troll' to the point that he had to PROVE that he bought the game.

whatever floats his boat, I guess.

Do FF ads emphasize RPG elements? What about KH ads? What about DA? Some of you need to understand video game advertising.

The point is to get people excited or interested in the game. When they buy it they can then see the details or read up on it.

OT: Are there any news on a ps4 bloodborne bundle? The only place i can find it is on amazon.es.

Not that I have seen, and I am kinda sorry because there needs to be one.

I can just picture it now... Red PS4 with a Top Hat design and in old English font "Pimpin Never Dies."

Just finished DS2 on the PS3 with all the DLC
somewhow completely missed the Scholar, but eh

And now need more Souls, Bloodborne just can't come soon enough.

Might squeeze in another DS1 playthrough before it arrives.

Really wish they would turn on servers early so we can hear more about online/etc sooner. I really want to hear if the game's online netcode is improved from DkS2 (PS3). Game featured a good bit of lag kills that annoyed me to no end.. Nothing worse then being lagstabbed in back from across the room or just being hit by a guy's sword who's 10+ feet away facing the opposite direction. Really hoping it's improved.

Hoping they at least make it so you can restrict online play in the game to your region only (like in DkS2) to help combat any potential lag.

Someone mentioned that the Day 1 patch is going up Friday, so servers should be online then.

We just have to stop using the word troll fellas. Its easy to offend. To be fair though Alberto, no one was really antagonizing you mate, most of the posts were just arguing your logic which is what forums are all about. Still I see a need for the respect levels to increase. Just speak nicer to each other sounds corny but it works.

Now back to BB. I am interested in how this will sell now. Definitely expecting it to be higher than early exclusives like infamous and TF due to higher user base, but I am wondering if it can get out of the 2 million range.

iirc someone already confirmed that.
but yeah, I do wish that the netcode is improved from the past games. failing to start co-op or pvp sessions wasn't fun either, although I have to admit that it happened much less with DkS 2.

This game looks good, but i can't justify buying a system for just one game, and the other good ps4 exclusives seem to be at least a year away.

Also hoping the day 1 patch brings about faster load times. Those streams last few days did not make them look enjoyable. Was honestly expecting them to be halve of PS3's DkS2 load screens, not the same or worst. Small thing to complain about of course, but would get annoying.

I think even when a game known to be hard, it wouldn't be instantly un-appealing to the mass audience. Wouldn't it be cool if you're the only kid/guy to beat a well known game for its difficulty? Don't know how it work on reality, might be just wishful thinking (but actually it could play this way if only Sony emphasize on it).
Since when has a Souls game been niche? Even the original Demon's Souls did extremely well.

Yeah, it did, but only because of extremely positive word of mouth and the community.

Sony learnt their lesson after their awful job on Demon's Souls, and after looking at Dark Souls they've gone full guns blazing this time.

Well, I suspect that what Sony learned from Demons' is that FROM titles can come together really late on in the development process. With that game it meant they elected not to release it outside of Japan because the near-final builds Shu reviewed weren't good enough in his opinion.

Maybe with Bloodborne they are simply factoring in that experience, and leaving it as late as possible to show stuff to the press just in case the situation repeats. I guess Bamco got caught the same way with DS2, with the preview builds being markedly different from the final causing some blowback.

Hmm. Bloodborne doesn't use fog gates that much anymore right? (besides after going into boss and dying of course).

I wonder how it will present the "you can't leave as there is an invader here" system. Wonder if it will use fog gates to prevent you from leaving or perhaps some kind of other solution. Like city gates would physically block you by going down, boulders falling, fire? Interesting to find out. Would love to not see fog gates so that you won't know there is an invader coming so you can't run back and prepare.

Is that Bloodborne CE that's in ShockingAlberto's post the same as the first print edition in Japan?

This got me checking import sites for the first print edition, considering buying that instead of the EU Collector's Edition I have pre-ordered.

Turns out I unknowingly had $88.30 dollars in store credit at Play-Asia, so that's a first print edition on order. :)

I switch a lot between Dark Souls 2 (PC) and Destiny (PS4). I know it's not the same game but you can definitely tell the difference in FPS when switching but you adjust fairly quickly. However, when you're engrossed into a game as much as a Souls game, you never sit and think about FPS too often.

30 fps feels far worse in a first person game. It will be jarring going to 30 fps after so many hours of 60 fps in DaS and DaS2 but we'll probably get used to it quick. Still highly disappointing that they didn't go for 60 but whatever.

To be honest I'm not thrilled by these previews (do not like horror games and loved the slow, deliberate pace of the prior Soul's games). Still will be there day 1 and may end up loving the new mechanics, but as of now I'm not sold on the changes.

git gud!!

Even though it won't be the same combat speed wise you should try dual handing in any souls game in the mean time. It should give you an idea on what to expect with Blooborne

Honestly the fact that your even willing to try it is awesome. If a person honestly tries a game and still doesn't like it. By all means throw that shit away at least you were open minded enough to try it out.

So hype for this. I was on the fence having never played a souls game before. Until yesterday. Loaded Dark Souls and played for around 4 hours. I died constantly and seemed to find every alternate route except for the one to the next area that I need to progress to. But it was so much fun. Went ahead and preordered Bloodborne this morning, and I'll pick up Dark Souls 2 on pc or ps4 next month. This is probably the quickest that I've ever become obsessed with a game. Such a great throwback to old school gaming.

Both Demon's and Dark Souls were horror games. People love to throw around "grimdark"--which is fine--but that doesn't prevent it from being horror.

I went through most of Demon's Souls, which is one of my favorite games, with a bow... I'm sure I'll be okay with the combat changes, but the dark oppressive world is not my cup 'o tea. My favorite levels in the prior games were always the "bright" stages. The contrast made the dark stages tolerable....

Well if you're interested in those other games then why not? Consoles are a long haul kinda deal and the games will come. At most by the time Uncharted comes out you might get a $50 price drop but that's about it.

I love to see this. Welcome to an amazing part of the gaming community.

But could you possibly re-phrase your last sentence. "Such a great throwback to old school gaming."

That seriously makes me feel old. There is no such thing as "old school gaming." if anything these damn kids with their cd based playstations and damned energy drinks and first person shooter hollywood blockbusters have muddied my casual (as you call old school) gaming.

Forgive me, I am going to go yell at clouds now.

I never did play Demon/Souls on launch... so seeing all the online Hunter activity day one is going to blow my mind.

Yup, that's pretty much the only negative I can think about for Bloodborne right now considering all the praise of the first impressions, previews, etc.. BTW, I just started replaying DaS at 1440/60.. Wow... It breathes life into a game I thought was long dead to me. All praise Durante!

They were dark fantasy style games. Wouldn't really call them horror.

hor·ror

noun
noun: horror

1.
an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust.

Not much must phase you if you were never surprised, shocked or dreading what was to come in any of the games. Hell, even running back to your bloodstain could be extremely stressful. They also had plenty of very disgusting (in a good way) creature designs and sound effects akin to some of the better Resident Evil or Dead Space designs. Besides, horror is an element of dark fantasy anyway...

Thankfully online interaction is based on Level instead of Blood/Soul Memory like DkS2 was. That system was horrible. Esp early on when each NG, NG+, NG++, etc level was separated, so you get a lot less people early on if you needed extra help with optional bosses or just to high a level for people to help (like if you were new like me at first and kept dying so kept losing/gaining more souls).

Pretty much this, side by side, like the Last of Us:R, when I switched to 30fps it was unplayable, but Destiny is fine with me.

Also the password system will be helpful to match up with people more easily

A horror game is something like Amnesia or Outlast. Dark Souls has horror elements but to call it a flat out horror game is just wrong.

It's especially true in regard of Demon's Souls. Most of it bosses are puzzles with a great first impression that will send chill into your spine, ever wandering how do you suppose to beat them. After your first encounter and victory though, their "horrorness" and "magic" so to speak, aren't there anymore as those kind of experience can't be repeated.

Playing Demons Souls I never once had the feeling of " horror " .........

dark fantasy maybe .. kind of ... but never horror.

Scariest thing to me was screwing up and rolling your body into lava in world 2 and losing tens of thousands of souls to the flames. Thats true horror

Well, you don't want this to be an exact copy of the others. It's good that it's doing its own new thing while still having familiar settings and game play mechanics. Otherwise you run into a problem of it being too similar. I guess that's not really a bad thing for you veteran soul's players though.
