Bloodborne Press Preview Impressions (16/03/2015)

Should be very interesting for me, gameplay wise. I always played mage characters (hurr gitgud blah blah) and given that there is a distinct lack of it in this game, I'm excited to see how I'll fare. Am I to understand that guns are, in so many words, a sort of replacement for the limited casts of magic?

I don't know about lategame guns but the first guns you get have so low attack power it is just used to knock the enemy off balance.

One factor for the "late" review embargo may be to keep certain online mechanics secret for as long as possible. They want reviewers to have full access to these functions, but don't want to give random people who got the game early weeks to spread spoilers. So they unlock everything on Friday and end the embargo on Monday. A weekend for reviewers to get hunted and for spoilers to proliferate.

I'm so freaking ready for this game... !

You can guard break in DS2, that instantly solves that issue.

It doesn't because the speed of the guard break is much much slower than the speed it takes to put down your shield and/or simply walk backwards. In dark Souls 1 at least your kicks were fast.

Man, the hype is getting loud enough I'm tempted to pre-order this thing. Haven't even played a Souls game, even though I got Dark Souls on a Steam sale a while ago just never got around to it yet.

I have $45ish in my PSN wallet too. Fuck it.

The foggates were cool but they didn't make much sense beyond Demon's Souls story.

Yeah, I liked the foggates. Really gave you a feel of "oh shit! I'm being invaded!" or the feeling of "Is this a boss? I should heal just in case/etc". But also gave you a good bit of time to react. Dark Souls 2 was way too easy to tell if you were about to be invaded. Love for it to find a new way to lock you in without making it obvious. Just imagine your first invasion if you are not given any clues that you can't leave (other then the lamp post bonfire thingy). Even better if you can be invaded without being told. I think that would be awesome.

So pretty much the game rewards you for agressive combat instead of watch out your sorroundings, good

As far as the second half of your sentence, I don't get that impression at all, quite the opposite. Edge specifically said the entire game is designed to make you paranoid about what might be waiting for you at each turn.

It is definitely more about being aggressive than previous titles, but rushing in blind will still kill you as much as it ever did.

I never preorder games but this is an exception.

The wait is killing me.

I don't think I've been this excited for a game to come out since Wind Waker or maybe Half Life 2.

Those were the last times I got so excited for a game that I couldn't play anything else.

It's consuming me, GAF. Every 5 minutes I think about this fucking game. I've had dreams about this game. The 24th cannot come fast enough.

I'm with you. After watching the stream I feel that the combat is not so "turtley" but you have to be VERY aware about what is around you at all times. It honestly felt like a Souls game with dex characters only...and a gun.

Dex builds are the simply the best. It's my default go-to in the Souls game.

I've only had more fun with a naked two-handed Zweihander run.

Edit: Which people should definitely try out.

I'm excited because as I was never an impenetrable iron clad knight, I always made use of a good shield. Taking that away from me is going to force me to play differently and I'm very excited to die and learn. Watching that stream made me see how smooth you can be with attacking and dodging and always trying to be one step out of harms way.

that Gatlin gun though....jesus

I bought a PS4 just for this game. .

Miyazaki is a brilliant man. I feel as if he turned gaming into an art form. It's very refreshing considering the mindless entertainment nowadays. EDGE said it best... Masterpiece

If you haven't played any of his games... you're in for a treat.

Happy to see them give some thought to the remote play controls, but I haven't played a game where remote play was a feasible control option. Don't see it working too well here since it's so action-orientated.

Phone homescreen. I'm so ready!

Demon's Souls players were like lepers when it first came out. Seriously rarer than unicorns.

They still are apparently. It's obviously more popular now but I feel like I'm one of the few who has played it.

There was some joke on the internet about Demon's Souls being the Souls game for hipsters... I guess it's true.

You'll need to do both.

I know but you have better positioning and less staggering in Bloodborne compared to souls slow placed movement and you can be smashed to the ground with slow recovering time, I need longe range weapons, the
sword/whip
looks cool but not my really in my gamestyle

Damn, that looks good. Can I get a link?

To those who got the strategy guide for DS2, I got my BB on Amazon but it says it won't ship until the 26th. Did the strats come out early for anyone during DS2 or will I really have to wait until after the game drops?

I'm glad I got comfortable with using things like sword in one hand, talisman in the other! Shield hasn't been something I've relied on for a long time, I tend to just use it if I'm forced to by a boss' mechanics or something.

So incredibly amped for this game, and positive impressions are only fueling that.

Well, shy is relative. They're advertising, yes, but it's still pretty subdued compared to what they've done for games like The Order despite Bloodborne having just as much if not more positive word of mouth behind it. It's not unreasonable or "out of touch with reality" to observe that Sony's strategy seems timid in some ways.
Are people stuck in another reality all of a sudden? They have shown and given so many trials of this game its ridiculous. Did the Order have an Alpha test?

Why would The Order ever have a alpha outside of internal testing? There are no networking systems to worry about.

Anyways, can't wait to move fast and quick and slaughter and be slaughtered. I really like the emphasis on movement.

The absolute WORST parts of the Souls series has always been the combat so I'm freaking pumped that Miyazaki has changed up the formula to encourage a more active and, hopefully, less boring form of combat.

That + the remote play impressions (use more of the front screen devs!) has put this into the Pre-Order category for me.

Really, the combat was the worst part? Have you been playing the same game as me?

Love how conservative players are called turtles! :D

To be honest, when you can block every physical attack without taking any damage, you're basically a turtle. I did it all the way through my Dark Souls run so I'm looking forward to a change of pace in this.
