Nintendo Going Mobile: Smartphone Game Deal with DeNA [First Games Fall 2015]

Took them long enough. They could fight many stubborn battles, but not going mobile while all of Japan has gone mobile fucking crazy moreso than the rest of the world was just untenable for a public traded company.

Nintendo recognising they can't do all the account and web stuff themselves but allying with another company goes to show how multiplatform Nintendo needs/needed to become going forward as the world of being a platform holder has changed significantly.

You have to forgive him. He went from this:

to this:

Within an hour!
My goodness, I haven't read that thread yet. Time to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in.

Hallelujah! It's a great day! Nintendo is finally waking from its slumber and rejoining the world!

And a big fat "I told you so" to everyone who argued with me in countless threads. I was right!
Now then, we have to be graceful and magnanimous ;)

It is great news though. Can't wait to see what they come up with.

Wait. What? They are making native mobile games with their IPs? Have I misunderstood something? What is happening? I saw the „Nintendo NX“ thread just a minute ago and now this. Crazy. The next years are going to be extremely exciting.

How will the mobile games eat into their handheld business? Let's say most people would be already satisfied with a small Mario game on their phone, why would they ever want to buy an extra, dedicated gaming handheld with expensive games? This practically means they're only planning to have their dedicated devices survive on the ~15 and ~50 millions of core Nintendo gamers that buy their consoles and handhelds respectively.

A service called Nintendo that you can download on Android and iOS that is virtual Nintendo game store. In that store you can buy all their mobile games aswell as their console games. Would that be allowed as an app?

not on iOS, and i don't think it would fly on the google play store either but you could sideload it on android

I don't see what would present a store-based app. Can one not make purchases on the Kindle app, it's been a while since I've tried it.
And they didn't make mobile games, until last year when they said they would develop apps that promoted their characters and IP.

And now we know the partnership that is making that promotional style app product happen.
I'm not sure how you've come to the conclusion that the extent of a major partnership involving a significant exchange in shares, is purely towards the production of "promotional style apps." Especially given what's being reported amounts to specific and unique development of mobile games.

This is Nintendo going [partially] mobile. Welcome to the new age.

Yeah I can't wait to play games designed around a gamepad for them to be played on touchscreens. Think tha's going to work well.

It has been happening for years through emulators anyway, may as well make it official. Though this announcement seems specific that all the mobile games will be made for mobile, not ports.

But mobile gaming will hurt Nintendo's brand! They don't need mobile, they already make enough money!

Lol at all the people who came up with every excuse in the book to shoot down the idea of Nintendo making phone games. Eat that crow.

I can pretty much guarantee that they're bringing emulators to mobile due to the fact that they recently took down all Nintendo roms from the website coolroms. If Nintendo plays this right they'll be making tons of $$$, it's just a shame they took so long to come to their senses.

Hi guys just woke up here how are...

Holy_Crap.gif

This is going to be a long day...

Wow!!!

ALL NINTENDO IPs???

I expected Nintendo to go with the times and enter mobile phone market BUT throwing ALL IPs into the mix?

All this means is that something like punch out could have a app game or Kirby.

Maybe you tap on boxers and swipe to dodge or its a critter crunch type game with kirby.

Traditional development is continuing on traditional platforms.

Took them long enough. They could fight many stubborn battles, but not going mobile while all of Japan has gone mobile fucking crazy moreso than the rest of the world was just untenable for a public traded company.
There was no "stubborn battle". They've been planning this step for at least 5 years:

As Iwata-san mentioned earlier, it was June 2010 when we first met. We met several times after that, and last summer we began specifically envisioning the idea for our alliance. We had numerous meetings where I myself talked to many Nintendo members in person.

This is good, there might be some mobile games that I actually like now.

Big experiences on nintendo consoles and smaller on mobile is a good balance. And having games on mobile will go a long way to exposing the brand to many more eyes.

The next thing Nintendo should do would be to put virtual console on the platforms as well (maybe only upto n64).

Holy fucking shit!
What in the flying fuck?
Oh my God!

That explains the "half-assed" "New" 3DS, I think.

Dont pay any attention to this post because I'm half asleep right now and overreacting stupidly to this news... 0_o

If you read Iwata's aspirations for the business, you'll see its intended as a going concern in its own right, not simply a promotional vehicle for other platforms' games. They're making these games on these new platforms for their own sake, as their own businesses, to make their own money - of course, I'm sure they'd welcome any cross-over purchases, but it's not the exclusive purpose of this venture. These are now all platforms in their own right to Nintendo - to paraphrase Iwata, they are redefining what a Nintendo platform is.

Just rereleasing the old Pokemon Games on mobile would mean a big pile of cash for Nintendo.

Please also note that, even if we use the same IP on our dedicated video game systems and smart devices, we will not port the titles for the former to the latter just as they are. There are significant differences in the controls, strengths and weaknesses between the controllers for dedicated game systems and the touchscreens of smart devices. We have no intention at all to port existing game titles for dedicated game platforms to smart devices because if we cannot provide our consumers with the best possible play experiences, it would just ruin the value of Nintendo’s IP.
Jeez, read the OP or the actual conference before commenting.
.

Yeah I think people need to not take what has become the norm of mobile gaming and apply it to what Nintendo is going to do (or assume they are going to port stuff). The deal with DeNA more than anything seems to be because of their expertise in mobile connectivity with that social network in Japan and knowledge of servers etc.

I needed a little gloating. I was called an idiot more times than I can count in those threads. ;)

To eat my own crow, I thought this wouldn't happen until Iwata was fired. Good on him for responding to reality.

I think people expecting a complete animal crossing or Pokemon game to hit mobile will be pretty disappointed.

I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't go further than little Nintendo minigames.

Certainly, but exposing their characters and games to a new generation is no small part of this venture.

The "New" 3DS has next to nothing to do with this. It's simply a refresh to keep that platform's ecosystem going for a couple more years. Like they did with the Gameboy Color, and like they did with the DSi.

Glad to have entertained :p

They've already said they're not porting old titles onto it.

:(

Nintendo says a lot of things. Just like how they said they wouldn't make mobile games.

Nintendo will definitely retrofit some of their old catalog of games to be playable on mobile.

They are going to make some mad fucking bank.

Though, this sounds more like the lending IP to outside parties thing than Nintendo moving to mobile. Save your doomsday prophecies and update the thread title lol.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2015/150317e.pdf

-Nintendo buying 10% stock shares of DeNA.
-Nintendo lending out IP.
-Joint development of a new multi-device membership service.

The official press release says joint development so why are you plastering this "lending out ip" stuff? Licensing and joint development are two different things.

To eat my own crow, I thought this wouldn't happen until Iwata was fired. Good on him for responding to reality.

Anybody who thought mobile was a good idea for Nintendo was jumped on in speculation threads and called a shill. Heck, I remember a few paranoid posters claiming I wanted Nintendo to go 3rd party because I suggested they throw Nintendogs on ios.

Today is a glorious day.

A store based app is an app that is literally an alternate storefront. It would be like steam allowing ea to add a free origin app that opens up to their store.

And by kindle app I assume you mean the amazon app store. Yes you can buy from it. Its Amazon's appstore. ie. steam and origin

If board games became the hottest thing since the iPhone overnight somehow and there were billions being made in board games, I'd want them to do the same thing with board games.

Nintendo will definitely retrofit some of their old catalog of games to be playable on mobile.

Why do people think this?

Maybe something like advance wars or simple like Pokemon or fire emblem, but the action games just don't work on that style of control.

I do believe Iwata means what he says though. They might "port" classic games in the future, but they will be adapted for smart devices to control and handle better than just simple virtual controls. Then Reggie can give an interview about how it is "not the same game". :)

Surprised so many people focus on their partner and overlook the announcement that Nintendo themselves will develop titles internally as well.

EAD developed mobile games. Crazy world huh?

But mobile gaming will hurt Nintendo's brand! They don't need mobile, they already make enough money!

The risk to devaluing the brand is concrete, Nintendo is hoping how they approach it (games dedicated to smart devices) won't hurt them.
