I didn't die for so long after the initial part with no weapons, then some big dude stole my souls, and I died within 2 minutes of my run to get them back.

Goodbye 5,000 of whatever you're called in this game.

Thematically, I think they're cool. You're a hunter and you have to hunt for resources. It's a neat concept.

However, gameplay-wise, I (so far) prefer the Souls mechanic of basically giving you the same tools every time you start over. In Souls, you can get stuck somewhere and die over and over, but you can learn to manage your estus in each encounter. In Bloodborne, it's possible for you to start with no healing items and no bullets, which can be grueling.

Definitely not a bad change by any means, but I think I prefer the old way currently.

Thanks, I think once I start playing, and as long as I'm mindful of the change, I'm going to end up close to your standpoint.

Hunting for blood to heal yourself and store the excess in bottles is a pretty neat concept, it fits well in with the Gothic Victorian Horror setting.

Is anyone else having trouble viewing specters? When I touch one, the gravestone bubbles up, but I almost never see the phantom's death movie play.

I'm still struggling with the tiny mobs at the beginning of the game, learning how to unlearn all the previous Souls stuff. This game is AWESOME! SO FUN! Load time complaints are legit, however.

I want to call it "souls"
Blood echoes doesn't sound right.

i was level 18. I leveled up to 20 and was still being summoned with no problem. I used the bell just right outside the boss door.

Thanks. I'm 61 right now, no luck being summoned or invading. Not hugely surprising, I just wonder how tight the level gap has to be.

I'm about 50 hours in and it's only gotten darker. :P

LOL wow really? Darker. Holy crap! Also length question:
I'm pretty much to the point where my only way to advance now is the forest. I've explored most of prison location that I can currently, and nightmare world, I keep dying. How many more locations are there and still plenty of gametime left right?

after beating the third boss
(which was actually way easier than I expected after hearing some people complain -- just parry parry parry) I really have no idea what to do, so I've been kinda just wandering for hours. I bought the emblem for 10,000 souls that opens the gate above the church thing, so I went up there and at the top there's a big door I opened, to the left it leads to some kidn of forest, and to the right I found two houses that ask for "blood" or something and a mace dude I killed. then another hunter dude came with a shotgun and I couldn't kill him.

pretty lost. but at least I have things to try.

re. co-op, I have to wonder if it's broken. it seems non-existent. I've played like ten hours now and I've yet to see anyone's summon sign and I've yet to be able to summon anyone. and I took off the neogaf password so that I could increase the pool size and still never anyone. I want to get summoned, how do I do it?

What should I be doing with my insight items? I'm up to Insight 10 and I'm not sure how that whole system works, I know I can use the bell for help, but can I help others for any kind of benefits?

I personally have like 2 or 3 areas/paths I know I can explore currently. One of them is absolutely kicking my ass, and I'm just working on one of the others. Couldn't tell you how big they are or how much is remaining. I definitely don't sense a light at the end of the tunnel, though.

Picked my copy up on my lunch break, came home and I'm letting the update file download now so when I get off work in 4 hours I'm ready to go. Ugh only 4 more hours, I can do this.

Since I won't be able to play this game for several months, I'm gonna have to leech enjoyment off of all your impressions. Couple of questions:

1) Miyazaki said before the game came out that the Tower of Latria was his main inspiration for the game. For those playing, have you found this to noticeably be the case? Are there areas in the game as stressful and nerve-wracking as that? Or is its inspiration more in terms of level design than atmospheric sensibility?

2) How is the level design overall? As satisfying to connect the dots as Dark Souls, or as tight as some of its best designed areas?

Yeah, there was a ton of hype for TLoU, I remember it well.

Dark Souls II had NeoGAF just as crazy as Bloodborne, though.

Didn't know that, I was under the impression that some people were mildly disappointed with Dark Souls 2 even though everyone still thought it was pretty good. Or maybe it just took a while for those opinions to form.

Does anybody know how I access the Messenger Top Hat and Yharnam Hat that you get for pre-ordering the game on the PSN? I'd completely forgotten about them and they aren't important but I\d rather have them than not have them I suppose.

I have downloaded the two items but I don't know how to access them in-game.

I found this to be the easiest of the first three bosses, honestly, no joke.
just keep him at close/medium range, if he gets too far I think he leaps and grabs and shit. just bring lots of bullets and keep parrying him over and over. he broadcasts his attacks so well that they're extremely easy to parry. parry, counter, parry, counter, parry, counter, that's pretty much how the whole fight can go.

Having such a hard time making a decent looking character.

Anyone have any codes for a decent looking male character?

Since it uses numbers it seems like it'd be easy to share how to make characters.

how do you get your blood back to you go to the place where you lost them or do you have to defeat who killed you?

One or the other. Go to where you died and if it isn't sitting on the ground, an enemy grabbed it and will have glowing blue eyes (probably one of the ones that killed you). If you can't find it, it's because you died a second time before finding it.

It's like the Souls games. You die once, you go to the same area, you'll find your mark somewhere in the area.

BUT in Souls games you merely dropped it and it would usually be a few seconds before your location of demise. Here your blood echoes can be picked up by any enemy in the general area, even one that didn't kill you. It's usually close, but it definitely adds a tense element to trying to get your loot back.

Also, just like Souls, you only have 1 death spot at a time, so if you have 30K souls, die and drop them, and die again on your way back, they're gone.

Have you explored the
nightmare zone?
I know where the boss is (I think) but I don't think there is much else to the place unless I'm missing a path there.

Since I have to wait patiently until Friday and as such don't want to read / watch too many reviews and impressions yet, can someone who has has played the game answer the following questions to ease my still weary mind as a Souls fan?

Please spoiler tag any answers you feel might be spoilers, and try to keep specific (late game) spoilers to a minimum overall.

- Briefly ignoring the (more aggressive but, as far as I can gather, great) action-y side of the game (i.e. the melee combat), is Bloodborne's RPG side not in any way weaker compared to the previous Souls games?

Does the (presumed) lack of bows for long range combat, magic spells or miracles, and heavier armor and shields in other words not severely limit the player's ability to pick a unique playing style and role in the game('s narrative)? Or to reiterate once more: how much room for roleplaying and varied combat tactics is there if everyone seems to play as a similarly fast, aggressive hunter class (despite there being actual classes to choose between of course)?

I still fear that Miyazaki has gone too far towards the melee combat side this time for roleplaying to be possible personally, so feel free to put me at ease.

- Are all the weapons of the transforming (and often crude looking) kind and if so, is there enough variety there? Is there enough variety in the defensive weapons as well, such as other things than pistols and blunderbusses? How about the outfits: varied enough to accomodate different looks?

- Are the game's environments really as dark and aesthetically similar to each other (i.e. Victorian and Edwardian England) as the previews made it seem, or do we get to travel to a typical Souls-like variety of environments again?

Cheers gaf, you have a heart of gold!

Fucking damn it, I just got stuck in the environment. Guess I get to find out what happens to your souls when you just quit.

EDIT: Huh, just starts you right back where you were. Luckily I was no longer stuck in the environment or I would have been totally fucked.

Just had my dispatch confirmation the game collection UK. 1st class delivery too...am I really going to get bloodborne 2 days early in the UK??

I caved, just bought it after finding out about the co-op aspects. Only ever played probably a 1/4 of Demon Souls, which I enjoyed despite never finishing it. Sounds like I should have Cities: Skylines up on my second screen while I play this based on the load times. I expect to die a lot.

The outfits/ clothing have me really wanting to get into this game. Is it possible to have several different looking in game characters among the people that play the game?

The Saw Cleaver is well balanced for beginners. Threaded cane is fabulous and also scales with Skill.
It also scales with actual skill ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Seriously, the cane is probably the hardest of the starting weapons

There are several equipment sets that you can get, each set consists of 4 parts and you can mix and match them freely

after my 6 hours of playtime I've managed to open up most of the shortcuts (missed probably a couple more) and have beaten one boss and in the process of beating the second one.

I find the difficulty traversing through the area is kind of the same as the previous souls games. the difference, I find, in bloodborne are the boss fights, which I think are a lot tougher this time around. granted, I managed to defeat the cleric beast on my second try but can't tell you how! all I can remember is a lot of blood and fur in my face, while trying to keep both health bars in check.

what I really LOVE about this game is how the villagers feel more alive in this world. the previous games had a bunch of guys waiting for you to show up. observing the few in the town area, it felt like they were sharing stories about their everyday life while occasionally stepping into beast poopy (love that animation lol).
