I actually didn't knock the gaitling gun hunter off of the tower. I fought him up there and managed to kill him. He got close to killing me a couple of times but thankfully I beat him on my first try. Also I don't know if anyone else has found them yet, but if you go around the stairs near the cathedral where the guys with the crosses are there are two hunters further up that will try to double team you if you aren't careful. One drops a new type of paper.

In case it wasn't already mentioned, the softcaps and hardcaps are:

Vitality ------ 30 / 50
Endurance -- NA / 40
Strength ---- 25 / 50
Skill --------- 25 / 50
Bloodtinge -- 25 / 50
Arcane ------ 25 / 50

I noticed after
25 STR
my damage bonus per point was less. I have no idea what Arcane is supposed to do outisde of item discovery. Many weapons have Arcane scaling on them, but so far there's no damage bonus associated with them when putting points into Arcane. For me at least.
Wait, weapons scale with Arcane but it gives no damage bonus?! How is that possible?

I believe this is the expression you make when that happened.
Something like that :p. At first I thought it was a miniboss version or something because I came across it after the first boss in the area with dogs in cages. Untill I noticed his healthbar was emty and it still wouldn't die. Hardest boss right there.

I'm surprised at the amount of people that accidentally skip the first boss. I thought it was quite obvious that the level was funneling you to the end of the bridge for an epic fight.
Yes I was curious as to what it does. So I told my friend who was playing the game simultaneously with me to go there and let it touch him and see what happens.

He told me
a hand came out of it and grabbed him, lifted him a few feet in the air and killed him. Then something about getting "Frenzied" came up on the screen? In any case I don't think I want to try for myself :P
You'll be able to see what grabbed you when you get an item later in the game. And you will be freaked out.

*rubs face*

This game...

Should I do the real first boss then or keep grinding on the one I've been doing?

Thanks for filling me in.

Do the real first one, first.

Just initiating the encounter will unlock levelling and weapon upgrading. After beating him, a lamp appears, you get some insight and you'll be able to summon/be summoned by other people.

Starting to feel really tired... 2h, 15min left of fucking school.

Ok, so my first venture into the Souls Series, and I have had quite a few Noob moments, but I am loving this game. Wow, what a learning curve at first. (I posted this in the Performance thread, but wanted to share it where it belongs).

After your first Lycan encounter, in the first 5 minutes of the game, I was killed pretty quick, that bare handed fight was tough. Got spawned to the Dream World and thought "Oh, you were supposed to die so you could see this world." I looked around a bit, read some notes, and teleported back to the Hospital. The crazy thing was, I completely missed the messenger that gives you your first weapons. So I proceeded, weaponless.

I must have fought that Lycan encounter at least 25 times, bare handed, getting close to beating him, then getting killed, over and over again. Finally, I did it. I about ripped my shirt off I was so pumped up. I thought "Now I get a weapon, look out!" Well, that wasn't the case. So I proceeded out into the square to continue my quest, bare handed, looking for weapons I should have already had in the first 5 minutes of the game.

About 30 minutes later, I thought "Something isn't right here!" So I pulled off the whole restart, and started the game completely over. This time, when I died in the Lycan encounter, I noticed in the dream world the messenger who gives you your weapons. I couldn't believe it. They were there the whole time, and I missed it. So now, I thought, I am really going to kick some ass.

I approached the Lycan again, ready to rip him up with my Axe and Pistol, only to find I couldn't use them. I kept going into my inventory and trying to click on "USE" but "USE" was blacked out. I didn't know I had to go into a separate menu system and equip them. I just assumed you HAD to get past the Lycan bare handed, and then maybe you could use your weapons when you got outside. So I proceeded to fight and beat the Lycan again, bare handed. This was much easier once I figured out to dodge, get behind him, charge attack him from behind, and it was pretty much over.

It wasn't until I got out into the Town Square again, that I was trying every menu, that I noticed I had to go to a different Menu System to actually equip the weapons, and not try to "USE" them in my Inventory. Then I proceeded to fight, and fight, and fight those crazy little townspeople who are all over the place. I was much better at picking them off 2 at a time, but when I would get in crowds bigger than that, I would get owned.

Now I am stuck trying to get back to this part where I got in too deep, lost all my blood echos, and I need to reclaim them. It was like my first 2400 or something, lol. Looks like I am going to have a lot more learning to do, but I am loving every minute of this. It doesn't hold your hand, it doesn't have any real tutorials, it kinda throws you in there and says "Good Luck!" I appreciate that. I can see how this isn't for everyone, but I can see how addicting this game can get if you are willing to put in the time to figure out the mechanics. Wish me luck!

lol my friend had exactly same problem as you. He had no idea how to equip the weapon

You can skip the
Cleric Beast?

Took a very quick shot at doing a Bloodborne style one.. of course I am lacking proper concept art, and that font.

Need some help...

The game says I can't play Online because it is not full installed. But it's not installing anymore. Anyone else run into this? (preordered the digital version)

On the other hand, the Offline play is awesome. Anyone have a strategy for save points in the game? Am I doing it right when I'm running back to the same save point I started at to upgrade things because they are few and far between?

Press Options button on the game, then go to Information. Background download of the rest of the game is probably not done yet, your download progress can be seen there.

If Dark Souls don't have unkillable skeletons at the graveyard, many people perhaps will ended up killing the Pinwheel as their first boss lol

I imagine that someone out there just grind grind grinded their way to Pinwheel.

I'm embarrassed I just did this. To be honest...I've been all around that level and I've been on both ends of the bridge that the werewolves are on. I don't recall a place to go to fight the first boss BUT...I was sortof dealing with the werewolves at the time.

This is good.

Maybe I can try the real first boss...get some traction and feel better about my ability to play the game.

Does coop not work?

Rang that bell outside father g for like 10 min. Had it set to worldwide and the gaf password.

Got jack shit.

Took off the pass and still got nothing.

2 insight down the drain...

Anyone using the hammer? I love the style of the weapon...unfortunately it doesn't seem terrible good outside of the charge up hammer attack. One thing I really love about it though: the attack animation when switching from sword to hammer. You smash the enemy with your hammer and stick the sword into the hilt mid swing. It's awesome.

Only got to barely dip in, just a little past the first lamp (died at the group of villagers) and enjoying it so far. I still think the menus and inventory UI is needlessly vague and clunky, but I can get around that.

Any tips on what are good stats to start out with? I went with milquetoast since I had no clue what most of the stats actually did (again, I still think this is dumb), but I might restart since I'm not far. Any preferences on first weapon?

OK, I have beaten the Cleric Beast. Now the real game has actually begun.

I know the Cleric Beast is considered the first Boss, is he located
at the end of that street, down that alley that is kinda hidden behind some barrels and a carriage? I saw some big creature down there, it is pretty early in the game,
and I was like "NOPE!"

Or is he located
behind that huge door, in the square where all of the people seem to be worshiping that huge fire? There is something big behind that door growling and stuff, but I only cleared that area out one time
before being jumped on a side street and killed by a couple of dudes without even having a chance.

Neither.

So after not liking Demon's Souls or either Dark Souls games, I absolutely am loving Bloodborne, and that says a lot. Seriously. At first I was upset dying a ton, losing my echoes and all that but once you understand enemy patterns and movement, it's simple. After 5 hours of starting, I managed to find out how the game works without reading too much into it and beating the Cleric Beast after the second try. I had him down to about 30% first try, but then leveling my character 3-4 times made it easier. Also thanks to Molotov Cocktails.

I found some paths, but not sure where to go next.. Sewers? Other place with those big monsters holding torches? Not sure, I'll do my fair share of reading today at work and see what would be best.

I haven't found it, but little things like that in the animations is always a great thing.

I'm going to assume that many people don't know how the bells work yet which is why the online portion of the game isn't that active.

to be honest..

The enemies in front of it seemed to hard so I looked elsewhere.

At the bonfire and the large doors being rattled by someone/something. It's a
"Shit-Brick-Hit Johnson"
.
You'll fight lots of them throughout the level. It's not a boss.
:)

Everyone ready for BB server maintenance? According to the menu, it's supposed to happen every Wednesday at (I think) 8PM - 11PM EST. That's right when I get home and wind down after work. =(

So I have 20 Skill and 1 additional point in Vitality.
Professional

Threaded Cane +3 and Pistol

I have the Hunter's outfit (both the one you buy and the one you find)

I cannot beat
Father Gascoigne
. I don't know why I'm struggling so much with the first boss. I get him close. REAL close but I just can't finish. I'm even using the
music box
you get from the
little girl in the window
to stun him throughout the first stage.

I fear that Bloodborne is a "younger man's game" and I don't have the reflexes for it anymore. If I suck this much with the first boss...ergh...the rest of the game is going to chew me up I imagine.

Levelling and first boss aside, you don't really need reflexes, just an awful lot of dodges to the side. I managed to beat after levelling 2 levels or so and I'm not a good gamer. Link on how if you need it.
I took a very unsoullike 'do, don't think' approach, and it worked great. Then again, it felt like my ZotE 2 experience payed of there, strangely enough.

Yeah, I've done this. It says something like 24.6 out of 29.9 GB downloaded but no progression bar. If I delete the game and reinstall it I won't lose my progress will I?

thanks for the reply

You can buy some from the Bath messenger in Hunter's Dream, if you want.

Just evade a lot and do 2-3 attacks per opening. He'll go down eventually.
