I used the same combo, the only thing I'll say is to dodge a lot and use the charge attack as much as you can when he's not in beast mode, after that you need to come close and hit as much as possible

Forgot about charged attacks lol.

Should I use my extended axe when I'm out of ammo?

naaahh. There are games that feel "weirdly smooth" for 30fps but Bloodborne is not one of them. The 2nd big area alone makes sure to kill that thought. Even the game's audio chokes in that area.

I've put in 18 hours into BB and this seems to be the games Blighttown.

It's not prevalent in any stage but this one.

I made the mistake of summoning someone for my fight with the Father. Ended up winning, but took the joy out of doing it myself.

Um, so who was that guy? Was he not
The guy in the wheelchair in the Hunter's Dream?

Also, what does arcane do? Is it for throwing things like knives and molotovs?

What exactly is the "nuanced" difference between Strength and skill

fps in coop is hell, even worse if someone hops in as an invader. The resulting brawls are pretty crazy though, got stuck in one at the Cathedral.

Elemental damage and item discovery, basically. A few weapons scale with it, and it'll boost your damage with flame stuff like the sprayer or the torch.

I've been playing this game nonstop and I STILL sometimes press triangle to two hand/transform my weapon. Old habits die hard.

I feel your pain. I can reliably transform a few dozen times and then I'll randomly derp and waste a vial for no real reason. Thankfully, I'm swimming in them now, but it's still annoying.

Thanks. So, some equipment that have magical effects to it?

What is the difference between strength and skill? They seem to both depend on each other.

It seems like invasion is under mutual agreement only. Truth?

False.

You can be invaded when you're in a stage with a bell ringing woman.

If you find and kill this woman you cannot be invaded.

A bell ringing woman spawns when you start co-op or on certain stages in solo.

The only thing I can think of is that they must have gone directly from playing AC Unity to this.

I'm loving Bloodborne but you are right - smooth is the opposite end of the spectrum from what it is.

The fact that I'm loving it despite the frame issue makes me want to quit playing until they fix it, because I know I'd love it even more.

I'm almost considering putting the game aside until the next patch. Hopefully it'll be out before too long and improve the performance by a decent amount.

Are you that off-put by it? Besides the load times, which I just use to browse GAF/check phone etc. seems pretty good to me and I'm a decent way in (8 bosses down). Some fps issues in Old Yharnam but thats about it.

Okay, so after playing a few hours (restarting once for aesthetic reasons) and getting right up to the first boss, I finally have some time for some very preliminary impressions. Mostly because I'm at work right now and can't play...

Things I LOVE
  • I honestly don't miss weapon variety at all. I chose the Threaded Cane and between a swift short sword and a massive whip I feel like I'm going to be perfecting its moveset throughout the entire game.
  • The character creator. We have the same wealth of options that Souls CC's traditionally give us, but this time with hair that doesn't suck and results that mostly look the same inside the CC as they do out in Yarnham. Best of all is the option to save custom faces - very handy for tweaking a face that's just shy of perfect.
  • Yarnham is beautifully depressing. Calling it "dark fantasy Victorian London" does it no justice - this isn't a setting that can be reduced to mere labels.
  • It's actually fun to die again! In From's last Souls outing, soul memory made it so that if you lost souls of any amount you were permenantly behind the curve in PVP and co-op. No soul memory means comfortable PVP niches, endless co-op, and worry-free corpse runs. You're no longer punished for dying by turning into a rotting husk and losing portions of your max health. Dying is a learning experience in BB, not something to be avoided at all costs.
  • The tactical variety in even the most basic trash mobs of Central Yarnham are impressive indeed. Shield guys tank, low-level peons drown you in their corpses, while heavy hitters close in for the kill. Also snipers. With surprise dogs! The huge pyre in Central Yarnham is one of the most well-designed encounters in gaming, hands down.
  • You can actually use a weapon for a realistic duration of time before it breaks. Granted there's no such thing as a realistic amount of durability for whip swords, but you get the idea.

Things I HATE
  • Eh, I got a cheap death by getting immobilized between some stairs and the wall. The rest of the game is so polished that this was particularly jarring.
  • I understand that I can't hold console games up to their PC counterparts, but after playing DS and DS2 at a buttery-smooth 60fps on PC, BB's framerate looks pretty rough. That said I haven't noticed any heinous dips. This is admittedly a nitpick, I don't care about this shit as much as some of you.

Things I'm UNDECIDED on
  • Not a huge variety of outfits in the early game - hope this gets padded out a bit.
  • Weird that items in this game have no weight, giving no discernible benefit to wield smaller weapons within similar DPS ranges to their larger counterparts.
  • Player hints are more vague and less helpful. On one hand you don't get everything spoonfed to you. On the other, it appears to lack even basic directions like left/right/up/down. I appreciate the preserved air of mystery in the world, but at the same time does something like "beware of sniper" have any meaning if you don't know what direction to take cover from?

All in all, BB is totally living up to expectations, even exceeding them in a few key areas like character creation (key to me, anyway). I'll post updated praise/concerns as I encounter them.

Just got the blade of mercy katana(you can dual wield them) I havent had a chance to really upgrade them yet because I had to step out for a bit. But so far I have the arcane stat on up to about 50 and +4.3% slow poison effect
It's a skill weapon. It has an A rating for skill.

Goddamn it, I thought double-tapping the share button took a screenshot.

Anyway, came across a pretty weird bug: saw Father G just standing still on a random bridge in coop. Like he was just a 3D model, I could walk through him and all.

I don't remember the Souls games being this buggy.

Gonna give invading a try now

It's not 30 locked.

Wait until you get to
Old Yarnham
. All sorts of performance issues.

Until the frame issue is corrected, 'smooth' is a word that will never be associated with this game.

It isnt anywhere close to locked lol

Damn it, From.

This is amazing design in that the people who get invaded are the ones struggling the most.

Fantastic

Yeah. I was worried about there being no hollow state to differentiate invasion targets, but this is a pretty elegant way to go about it.

Something needs to be done about coop spawns though, it's incredibly annoying to find your beckoner at times.

So I got communion, how do I equip it?

Also can anyone point a general direction after 3rd boss? Door opened in the church, but dead end, unless I missed something.

There's a lot that needs fixing about coop

Yeah, it's not overly bad, but it's definitely distracting. I'm still really enjoying the game, but would be enjoying it even more with better performance. I guess it's also because I've put so many hours into Dark Souls 2, and that game runs incredibly smoothly, so my brain expects that and feels like something is wrong when it doesn't happen.

You can SOOO cheese the game too the way they did it. I got spawned into their game and I was behind some shortcut doors (since you spawn where you were last standing in your game). You can open them even if you're not the host.... so dude got all 3 doors opened up and he hadn't even found the first lamp.

After running around like a headless chicken for hours and following literally every path except the right one, I've finally killed the first boss (first try!!). And god damn, this game is amazing.

Moving away from Summon Signs to a Bell Sound is an odd design decision. Don't think I like it. It is nice to have a visual cue that others are looking to help or invade.

Fight Clubs are going to be a headache to setup and PvP may never reach the competitive level of previous Souls games as a result.

Still noob, but I managed to get through that first part with the bonfire, killed both rifle guys and then I found some alley and a big caped dude killed me lol.
