Bloodborne |OT| Now With Newcomers Guide Attached Below OP

Finally got in last night.

Spend 20 minutes looking for what happened after i pulled the lever in the very very beginning.

I'm also still not sure if i like inverted controls or normal...

Oh Bloodborne

Wow I can't believe some people have already finished this. Anyway, I've never played a souls game, and just spent my first hour of play, and 90% of that time was wondering what the hell to do. I couldn't even figure out how to equip my weapon!

So at this point, I feel really daft. I wish there was at least some tutorial on the most basic stuff like that.

Dodging is still something I need to get used to. The R3 lock on is not the best strategy. I wish it was mapped to a different button.

To confirm, locked on dodge does a side step and non-lock on dodge does a full roll dodge?
With today's new system firmware you can map it to any button by switching them around!

Yes, you're correct.

Once you get used to using R3, it works really well. Have you played the Souls games?

About six bosses in, thought I would type up some tips to help those feeling lost or hopeless. Some of these overlap with the Newcomers' Guide, but still should be a little bit useful:

1) Don't be afraid to experiment. Tough enemy or boss kicking your ass? Wonder if you can make that jump? Try to see if you can gun-parry that one move you think that you might be able to and go for that jump. The worst thing that can happen is you die, and death is inevitable.

2) You can sprint by holding down O and jump by double tapping it from a sprint. This is noteworthy because despite playing and beating every Souls game, I didn't realize this until 10 hours in.

3) Drink those potions down if you think there's the slightest chance it will help you advance/survive the encounter. They drop like candy and are relatively cheap, don't horde them. Same goes for bullets, they may seem scarce in the beginning, but after a particular section I have more of them than I'll ever need (and hitting up on the D-PAD sacrifices some life to gain some more, particularly useful for boss #3).

4) As mentioned in the OP, you gain life back when you hit an enemy after being hit as indicated by the orange bar in your HP meter. You can still wail on an enemy after go down to get HP, so take full advantage of that to do trades that end up completely in your favor.

5) Find the strengths of both your weapons' modes and exploit them to the fullest. For example, I'm using a weapon that is short range in one mode and long range in another mode, for Boss #2 and many enemy counters I was able to use the long range mode's R2 attack to hit them from behind objects and out of reach from them. However, when going up against bosses where the hit-to-gain-HP mechanic is important, this long range mode is far too slow. So I now have a good idea of what mode to use against what enemy type.

And last but not least...

6) Always be dodging.

You should use the new firmware button mapping tool.

The Souls games (Bloodborne included) are always vague in terms of what you have to do.

It's can be a pain in the ass intially, but once you get the basics down you'll start to appreciate this vagueness. It gives a nice sense of mystery and discovery.

My best advice would be to watch a few early-game videos on Youtube. You'll get a hang of how it works by watching experienced people play the games. They don't necessarily explain everything, but try to follow what they do. How they manage the inventory, what equipment they use and so on. I found that quite helpful some years ago.

there has to be another way to get to that gate because I never went to the bridge and fought the wolves until after I beat the cleric beast. i wish I was still playing Id go look. getting passed those wolves is tough as nails!

There is. After you get last the mob around the fire. Go straight instead of going down the stairs into the plaza witn the fountain. Break some barrels and drop down where there are some caged and uncaged dogs. Explore that area and you'll find the lower floor of the house and can go out the otherside and up the stairs to open the gate. There are stairs inside the house that take you up to the bridge past the wolves.

Yes.
Doesn't work, however shooting it in the head enough times will stun it.

You can parry and execute the r1 finishing move on Cleric. You have to make sure the tracking dot is on his dome by pushing up on the right thumbstick after youve locked on(if its not on his head already)

Well my order from thegamecollection is still 'awaiting stock/release'. I guess there's zero chance of it arriving tomorrow.

Excuse me whilst I go and cry in the corner.

It's not parrying, it takes a couple of shots to do enough damage and then you can do the visceral attack. He's not actually able to be parried though.

That's what I was saying. Though the only problem would be if you switch O with R3 then R3 would be the first cancel and back out.

Yeah it can be a pain. I've been using it liberally though since I'm disabled. I've got X and O as R1 and L1, Square as R3, Triangle as O, R1 as L2, D-Up as Square, R3 as X. Navigating menus can be tricky to say the least!

So I tried out the Beckoning Bell for the first time yesterday and got pretty far with this guy that joined. We got all the way to
Father G
, I guess that's what they're calling him. But right before we get to him another guy joins so it's three on one. The battle only lasted like 45 seconds. Looks like I'll be using Insight/Beckoning Bell for bosses from now on. On that note, I have to go back and defeat the
cleric beast
because we skipped right over him.

By the way, the two randoms I played with didn't have mics, is this the norm for Bloodborne?

Guys, I'm really debating whether this is smart pick up for me. I want a challenge, but not a frustrating challenge. The kind of challenge of super tight gameplay that indicates my failure in the game as a failure to be skilled with the mechanics. I can only really play in small hour chunks at a time, so if the game is 40 hours, it'll take over a month for me to finish. I just don't want those hour sessions to be wrought with frustration that I made no progress.

Never played a Souls game.

I don't think there's voice chat at all.

Which frankly, I think is a good thing. I want my summoned hunters to be the strong, silent type.

I don't believe Bloodborne supports voice chat in-game.

Just beat Father G. Was hoping to run him through first time like I did Cleric Beast but he got the better of me a couple of times. Staggering + Visceral Attacks - Once you get the hang of doing this and learning when each enemy is vulnerable its a god send. Really good use of firearms.

One thing, though. Am I the only one finding it incredibly hard to find Blood Stone Shards? Or am I not far enough in the game to farm them somewhere?

How is it possible to have 10 Insight before Father G.?

Just found something really interesting under the Healing Church Workshop.
The hidden door that you have to jump to on the drop down to the bottom has some crazy stuff in it that I'm sure has major lore implications.
But even though I now have this knowledge I really don't even know what to do with it.

Went from cathedral to old yharnam in 5 mins- I missed stuff right?

I did the same last night. Well - I talked to a guy that have me a gesture and he hinted at stuff to do but through exploration I ended up out of the cathedral, so I just kept exploring.

Souls games in the past haven't allowed chat for co-op. Don't know if it's different for Bloodborne.

Never played a Souls game.

First Souls game is always the toughest. Theres a learning curve but once it makes click the fun starts. Im a souls veteran and im already near the end of bloodborne because i know how these games work in general. Did not have that much problems so far, even killed a few bosses on first try.

Keep playing, its worth it...

so I haven't really been using my drops, could someone quickly explain what each of the following do?, and how I should use them?

- Ritual Blood

- Silencing Blank

- Red Jeweled Brooch

- Madman's Knowledge

- Shining Coins

- Bold Hunter's Mask

- Pthumeru Chalice

PSA: Bloodborne doesn't work with suspend/resume while in online mode, it will only work in offline mode. It has to reconnect to the server when put in suspend/resume so it will kick you back to the menu screen.

There's a specific enemy that always or has a very good chance of dropping bloodstone shards for me - I have 16 Arcane though so I don't know if that matters. The enemy is
The first guy you fight when going down into the pre-sewers area after the dogs in cages. He has a blade and a torch.

Wow, no real invasions? You have to accept them now? This sucks.

u wot m8

It works the same as it always has in souls games. Except rather than having to be in human form to co-op or PvP, you ring a bell. Functionally it's the same, except more forgiving in Bloodborne because you don't lose the ability to get help if you die.

You made the jump to that door?

I tried it once and didn't make it anywhere near it, so I didn't think you could make it..
