You can.
There's a message/summoning spot (not left by a player) telling you if you need help, just ring the bell. It's down the left path from the central Y lamp, near that first torch wielding guy.

I think that's not who you're thinking of.

IIRC, that type of summon refers to
Alfred
, though I've never skipped the cleric beast long enough to find out for myself.

Rom is the most lame and annoying boss I've ever encountered in a souls game, save for Darklurker from DS2 with a melee build. I understand the concept on how to beat him, but there's way too many bullshit instant death attacks. Co-op seems to be not working half the time here too.

I'm right here too. Shit sucks.

Right here with you guys. He feels so easy then I'll get immediately annihilated in 1 or 2 hits.

Yes, yes, and yes.

rom is so easy if you take your time.

There's always someone...

edit: I did beat him/her/whatever last night.

No, the base damage converts into elemental damage & then it scales with arcane, functionally arcane is pretty good & does decent damage, I just thought that it was lame not having the weapon be engulfed in flame if you put a fire gemstone, so I decided to abandon it.

Yeah, I wish the gems added the weapon effects like Fire/Bolt Paper do. Maybe it's good for PVP, since someone might not be wearing clothes with good elemental resists and can't visually see you have a fire axe instead of a normal one.

I tested it on a separate play through. It's f'n Father G. Go see for yourself instead of thinking I'm an idiot.

Alfred is the summon for BSB.

Even with just this dungeon and the ending trophies being all I lack, the second boss in Pthumeru Ihyll is about to be the sole reason I give up on trying to platinum this game. Really really hate that boss.

I liked it. He requires patience.

Interesting tidbit. When co-opping if the host runs straight through to the boss encounter without the fog door animation, you know they're on their first try. Makes me feel like I have to step it up a bit

On a related note just got summoned into NG from NG+ at SOY. Absolutely murdered them. Wasn't fair at all

Cool. I think I'll do the shortcut before taking on Slammer. I've barely used the gun for parrying yet, so I can't imagine I'll be any good at it.

That Executioner does makes for good practice in parrying, so when you have that shortcut opened up and aren't carrying much in the way of echoes you should go mess around with him.

You'll want to get some parry practice in before boss #2.

So I cant get Eileen to leave Tomb of Oedan, I killed one hunter, not sure I saw a second one. She just keeps saying "try to keep her hands clean".

I killed BSB and VA already.

Any help?

amelia down. took the path to the left (forrest?). initially took the right, but ran into two other hunters. with 24k echos, i wasnt having it. do you have a choice there? can i have gone either way? also, armor. should i be buying vendor armor? i see some crow (feather?) armor that looks pretty good. is there an easy way to compare armor stats to what your currently wearing?

I just found out that if you return to the dream without insight
the Doll will be like it was in the beginning of the game, you can still level though. If you gain insight and come back she'll be alive again. Insight is basically Insanity level lol.

Made it inside
Byrgenwerth and got to the lookout and decided to kill Willem. Don't know if it was the wrong decision or not, but he dropped a really good rune and some even more lore on it. God damn it the lore in this game is so good.

I literally JUST beat him. Fuck that thing.

I'd recommend going to the left. The atmosphere of that area is amazing, and there's a useful item that lets you use the other work bench in Hunter's Dream there. The path guarded by the Hunters can be visited later.

I buy all the armor, just to be fashionable, but a lot of sets specialize in particular resistances (poison, frenzy, fire, bolt), and so are very useful in different areas. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to compare merchant gear with what you currently have equipped.

He's the only boss i got legit stuck on for a while. His design really clashes with this game imo. I dont even wanna think about him in NG+

Made it past
SOY
on my second attempt! Now I'm in
Byrgenwerth and the hunter in the building right at the start is kicking my ass

Does the boss for canhurst have really high bloodtinge resistance or something? I spent all this time getting up to 30 STR so I could use my cannon, upgraded it to +5 or so, and its doing no damage at all...I feel like i'm missing something...

I'm exactly at that point now and looking to avoid doing the fight for as long as possible. So frustrating that all of the optional stuff I missed on my first playthrough is gated behind this BS boss.

At the risk of being accused of being a "Internet badass" or something, I wondered if my
Rom
was bugged the way so many people have trouble on him, then I got him in chalice dungeon again and it was still super easy so /shrug

The
spiders die in 1 or 2 hits when you hit them from the side (as you should)

The
blizzard is super telegraphed and you can see it coming a mile away, you just run in 1 direction and it never hits you.

The
aoe hurts a lot but that's why you go in, take a couple of pokes and run out.

Sure the whole fight takes awhile if you're
clearing the spiders
but it's super safe.

I don't remember the other games having this disparaty in what bosses people had a hard time with :(

Or the opposite, as it may be.

No, it's the opposite. It's called insight for a reason

yeah, he wasn't really that bad. i didn't even mess with the spider adds at all, i just went straight for him. died a couple times (once when he was at 1%) and then took a break to eat dinner, came back, and wrecked him

uploaded the video of the fight - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUBrC3J8frI

this is the right and safe way to approach rom ;p

For me, doesn't matter which direction I run, I get hit like half the time. And I'm running full out, with enough stamina.

Beat Rom on my second try. Didn't even bother killing the spiders, but I can totally see how taking care of the spiders would be a much safer approach.

Second time so far a boss has killed me the same time I killed it. I'm so glad this isn't DS2 lol.

There's too many moving parts in that fight. Its not even particularly hard, it just feels like a fight designed to test your patience. If Rom was in DS, I think we all would have just bought 200 arrows and sniped that fucking thing

By the way, for anyone having problems with Rom's missles, just sprint to him before he has time to even launch it. He won't use his missles if you get to him quickly enough.

You don't even have to memorize where he's gonna spawn, just look around and as soon as you see him, fucking book it.

I actually did just summon someone
who died trying to eliminate the spiders one by one, even ones nowhere near Rom.

I'm not sure he's the best for co-op to be honest. I must've gotten lucky a bit in NG where it took about 3 goes. But he was being a total asshole in NG+. Took an hour or two of my life. I think I sorta figured it out in the end, but I thought that the 1st time too and those same tactics didn't work. Hate to say it but I think theres an element of luck involved. 1 of my goes I got him
down to about 1 third health before he decided to do anything
. Couldn't replicate that again though.

Re co-op, I just think someones likely to fuckup and ultimately make it harder for yourself. I didn't summon anyone because I didn't want to waste their, or my time if one of us didn't get it EXACTLY right. And that fight seems to have a much finer line for that stuff then most.

All those saying Rom is easy are right. It is easy, but for some reason many, myself included had or have trouble beating it. You know it's easy, you know what to do, every single part of the fight is easy and damage is easy to avoid. But in the end you end up making one mistake and it all piles on you. That's what makes this particular boss so annoying.

How do gems work?

When I beat the game I only had weapons and such that I needed.
If you have a weapon not currently in your hand, do you still get passive Gem Effects?

EX. if you have a gem on a lets say a pistol equipped but not out in your hands and your hands currently have a Saw+Blunderbuss, will you get the effect?

No, it's the opposite. It's called insight for a reason

Yeah but one could argue that because this game is so inspired by Lovecraft's work and Cosmic horror in general(Which HPL pretty much created), that as you gain more insight into the Unknown you slowly begin to go mad and become more accepting of the things happening around you. Dolls begin to talk, terrifying creatures that defy all natural laws of science and order and undermine the very understanding of our universe.

Got to *Cainhurst Spoilers*
Martyr Longarius, he's super easy but I ran out of bullets because I wasn't paying attention to how many I had left and had to Bold Hunter's Mark back to the Lamp and then back to the dream to level and get some items since I had like 50K blood echoes. About to go beat his ass with my threaded cane. It sucked that I did that since I had him down to 50% of his health too.

rom is easy but he sure suck. When i saw him in the chalice dungeon i was like "not this shit again". I want some super aggressive dual monster boss, not this passive patience tester.
