Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

I'm kinda surprised by all of the people who are saying that there is no Fire Emblem in this game, there is a ton. The motorcycle that red-haired guy is riding? That's a clear reference to Cain the "Great Bull", the red Cavalier from the first Fire Emblem. The blue haired guy is obviously wearing a Marth costume, while the blue-haired girl is channeling Caeda, or maybe Sumia. All of their costumes and vehicles are references to not just Fire Emblem classes, but to specific Fire Emblem characters.

I wasn't expecting this direction.

When I saw Atlus X Nintendo at the very beginning I went "oh shit! Its FEXSMT!"

and as the trailer kept going I kept second guessing myself going "wait.... this is idol stuff" "I don't think this is FEXSMT" "Maybe this is some new project"

Then the trailer ends and I go "oh... I guess this is it then"

Nope. Persona 3 is excellent!
I definitely had a great time with P3 when I first played it but face it, the actual gameplay of 3 is terrible. It's the worst implementation of the press turn system to date, they took away player control of party members and replaced it with the terrible commands for no good reason and Tartarus is the least interesting dungeon I've seen in an RPG.
Persona is carried by its characters.
While that's obviously a big part of the draw to the series but P4 was actually fun to play. The dungeons aren't much better but fighting challenging bosses is enjoyable.

One punch man ?

One Punch Man.

This looks relevant to my interest. =3

No, because in your analogy, SMT is the rectangle while Persona is the square.

Uhuh so the Square (Persona) Isn't a Rectangle (Shin Megam Tensei)? or I guess they are not actually related at all now so IDK.

Not really. The demons/personas are based off the demons in SMT and that's about it. It's like saying Zelda is a Mario spinoff because chain chomps, goombas, and cheep cheeps appear in it.

Ok sorry :|

The battle systems share pretty big similarities

Disregarding the fact that this isn't called "SMTxFE" anymore, I mean that the rectangle (SMT) isn't the square (Persona). This wasn't "Persona x FE", it was "SMTxFE", i.e. the rectangle.

I can understand why some people might be dissapointed with the trailer, they were expecting something more FE/SMT focused.

In my case i thought the game was canceled, i enjoyed all i saw (as a new IP) and now i can't wait to see more.

But couldn't it have been a Square x FE but have been called Rectangle x FE because the square is a type of Rectangle?

And that's why you play P3P. Though while that of course doesn't fix the dungeon design, it does help give you control of your party.

Yep. Someone also translated the name of the enemies the characters face and they're all based on fire emblem characters.

To be fair, anime similar to Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei aren't exactly what I'd shown to a newcomer to demonstrate the medium's virtues.
That's true, but this trailer was basically a "Worst Of Anime" compilation. If I absolutely had to choose between FE/SMT style anime and this, I'd say the SMT/FE anime would have a fair shake by comparison.

Looking at this thread, it's really tiring to see people disparage both Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem—two great video game franchises—in order to somehow justify this game's trailer. Some are making it sound like SMT and Fire Emblem are franchises akin to Hyperdimension Neptunia, Conception or Omega Quintet.

But couldn't it have been a Square x FE but have been called Rectangle x FE because the square is a type of Rectangle?

Would you call a rectangle a square?

Calling these "waifu" franchises just demonstrates how little you actually know.

There was always some element of it there tho...just less in your face. FE:A wasn't even the first game with marriages and such for example.

Besides i am pretty sure he was talking about the CURRENT interations of said series...which well they are if you let GAF tell you since these are the only threads I have seen the whole "waifu" stuff become enough of a problem that people lose their shit over it.

I was the exact same, I thought it was a new game until Shibata said it was FExSMT.

I expected something way darker, but I'm okay with this still. A bit too anime even for me, but overall still looks great

So you're saying it's like persona right

Nothing in that trailer was even close to those titles.

Would you call a rectangle a square?

If it was a square I would call it either.

Looks awesome. Totally ridiculous. So like, Persona with ridiculous stage shows and Idol performances? If it is anything like Persona, I hope the dungeons aren't such a trudge fest.

So you're saying it's like persona right

What is? Neither Shin Megami Tensei or Fire Emblem are like Persona.

Nothing in that trailer was even close to those titles.

Read what I wrote again.

Uh... well, now I'm confused. Anyways, one's a crazy person if they say that Persona is SMT. You just need to play the games to understand how they differ.

A square is a type of rectangle. But on that range, a rectangle is a general type of shape that includes a bunch of different shape. A rectangle can also refer to a specific shape (what you'd normally think of when you hear rectangle), and that is distinctly different from a square.

Basically, SMT is an overarching franchise consisting of a bunch of unique franchises within it, but the mainline series has its own unique identity that separates it immensely from the spinoffs entirely.

Would you call a rectangle a square?

Eh, because both franchises was never that big. It have a cult follow sure but it never was as popular as it is now.
P/s: Also for some people, the new direction is the first game in the franchise so.

Read what I wrote again.

Reading it again (twice to be sure) you seem to be implying people are bringing shin megami tensei and fire emblem to hyper dimension neptunia levels by saying this trailer embodies those games (shin megam tensi and fire emblem).

Which is also implying this trailer contains elements from Hyper Dimension Neptunia type games.

If I have misinterpreted that I apologize.

It's funny how no one gets all up in arms about Devil Survivor not being an SMT series despite being the same "Megami Ibunroku" that Persona was.

Persona has the gameplay mechanics, demons, and universe of the other SMT games and while it may as well be its own franchise due to wildly different aesthetics and popularity it is still very very much under the umbrella of the SMT series. So while SMT and Persona clearly stand for different things, one is still technically part of the other, like it or not.

Not fucking even

Come on man. You can dislike the trailer but to compare this to those games (especially based off the little we have to go on..not to mention the different pedigree behind it) is insane.

You can dislkike things but please stop treating everyone who doesn't agree with your dislike as lesser by comparing it to stuff like that. This is something that bugs me to no end when it comes to videogame discussion (or discussion of anything on the internet). The idea that by disliking something it must be complete garbage trash and that anyone who does like it is some lower class plebian. Overexaggeration of course but it is hard to read anything anymore with out this weird arrogance taking place. You don't like it. I even understand why you don't like it. But please stop acting like the fact that you don't like it factually makes it a bad thing. You don't like the direction this game is taking coooooooool.

After all this, I guess I'm excited for the game, but that was just a bad trailer and didn't do anything for me. It just had some cool concepts that could work well together but it made me more and more confused with each passing second.

It's not the greatest reveal for a video game.

...What. Read the words that I wrote and that is what I am saying. There is no hidden illuminati message behind those words. I am not referring to this game's trailer looking like Omega Quintet.

I understand there's disappointment here, but here's my 2 cents: it looks pretty cool! I specially love the silhouette NPCs around the city. Can't wait to see more.

Was I that unclear...? I'm talking about the people in this thread saying that Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei are games which are aesthetically and conceptually similar to games like those Idea Factory make. That's it; I never compared this trailer to those.

I would't call the press turn and weakness systems similar. Sure they both allow you to move multiple times in a single turn, but they function much differently.
No other SMT series gets closer to the mainline PT system outside of DDS. Saying there aren't similarities between Persona and SMT is kinda ridiculous. The only big difference between the two is how the games are structured.
And that's why you play P3P. Though while that of course doesn't fix the dungeon design, it does help give you control of your party.

That's definitely the best choice if you have the option.
