Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

Betrayed expectations. Everybody, including myself, had a mental image of something more similar to Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. This (so far - again its becoming more clear we aren't seeing everything) looks different enough as to cause some tonal and expectations whiplash.

I think some of those expectations were misplaced. Personally I always thought it made more sense for the Devil Survivor team to be working on this, while "Team Maniax" worked on whatever next SMT project Atlus has planned in the vein of Raidou, Strange Journey, and SMT4. Either that, or this project was vaporware. Turns out it's real, and the Devil Survivor director is indeed the producer.

I mean just ask yourself, if you're Atlus, why would you prioritize your key development staff on an untested collaboration project which you won't fully own, rather than working on the next entry in a franchise which you have full control of and would solely profit from it.

So...what happens if this game ends up being better than Persona 5?

In imagination land, anything is possible. So of course once that happens, PS4's lead begins to collapse and Wii U finally takes its rightful place as dominant console this generation.

The amount of salt being pored over this is astounding.

Like, even by Internet Grognard standards.

No, no. That will happen because Mario will turn into a tachyon in 200cc, traveling back in time and deleting the PS4 from existence. He will also un-discover the higgs to put us back a few decades in particle physics research to hide his tracks.

Stines' Gate has Chosen Mario Mario.

If Atlus releases two great console RPGs in one year, isn't that good for everyone?
It would be awesome. I'm just thinking of the inevitable comparisons we're going to get and my personal ambivalence towards P5 right now. P3 and P4 are some my favorite RPGs of the past few years and I'm having trouble getting myself excited for P5.

This weird thing Nintendo and Atlus decided to reveal today though...it's very interesting. It could end up being a train wreck for all I know but I can't wait to play it lol. I want more info!

I've always found the DeSu games to be better titles than the SMT games sans Nocturne and DDS. I don't know why but I always managed to get myself pulled into the DeSu stories whereas the SMT ones I've always felt a cool detachment from the plot.

What in the fuck was that trailer.
I LOVE IT.
DEMON HERE, DIVAS THERE, BULLSHIT HAPPENING EVERYWHERE

Seriously, Nintendo just dropped bombs all day today. >.<

I don't disagree but I don't think the mind of the average Gaffer really goes there for better or worse. My only point is that I think a significant part of the negative reaction stems from "this isn't what I expected" rather than "this is actively and objectively bad" though people are of course free to think the later.

Fuck why didn't I see this? It makes sense... the disturbances we've begun to document in the spacetime continuum have been growing in size and number...

Reading this thread a bit, I'm actually quite a few people don't like it... I'll repeat that I haven't played any SMT or Persona games, so there may be some mistakes on the way I view things.

SMT always seemed a bit fantasy-medieval like FE and my first though for a crossover was a "union" of these worlds. Basically, FE and SMT characters from different eras. A bit like Project X Zone or Hyrule Warriors but with FE and SMT characters. This may please some people but it would essentially be a fan service game. Not being a fan of one of the series, my interest was pretty slim and I mainly cared for the FE aspect of this.

And now we got this. It seems to follow the Persona games more. Modern and high school setting, maybe even that anime fan service stuff. The settings and characters are unique and essentially, it seems like it has elements of FE series. It's not a crossover but a game with elements of FE, made by Atlus. And I like this much more than a crossover of two somewhat niche series.

Also, I don't really find the anime stuff that bad. Sure, the bit with the exploding clothes was kind of ridiculous but I can't see the game being full of things like that. And after watching the Persona 5 trailer, the game seems even more pleasing to me. It's really fresh for Wii U. I just only hope that this will be out by the end of 2015 in Europe...

Naw, SMT is mostly set in post-apocalyptic modern Tokyo. The shot in the trailer with the main character(?) looking over a ruined city is as SMT as it could get. Personally, I am hoping for some kind of a twist and reality not looking like what it seems. After all, [SMT IV spoiler]
SMT IV started with what seems to be like a medieval setting only to "surprise! You get to post-apocalyptic Tokyo after all!"

There's also the possibility that anything "FE" and "SMT" are strictly within the realm of in-universe virtual reality, though.

Also the obvious P5 port materializing next to me should have been a dead giveaway. It has this strange "Only on WiiU" written on it.

This game isn't SMT, they deliberately dropped that from the title. So no one should expect SMT elements any more.

It's not Persona, that series has a particular look and sensibility, and people trying to reduce it to just high school + J-pop are being dumb.

The title they gave this game is Ibunroku, which is the title they gave the first Devil Survivor game. Once I also saw that this game is being overseen by a Devil Survivor producer everything clicked for me. It's going for the same trash aesthetic that series has and that's an aesthetic that has nothing to do with Persona or SMT.

The interesting thing about adding Ibunroku to the title is that it means we should expect something from the broader Megaten umbrella to show up at some point, which basically boils down to traditional spell and item names and demons. I can't read any of the spell or attack names in the footage so far, but I did notice a conspicuous lack of Megaten demons in the battles. The enemies and summons all seem to be new or Fire Emblem based, which is interesting but may just be something that happens in the stage battles that were showcased. Maybe regular Megaten demons will show up as random encounters on the Tokyo map, but their omission for now is strange.

So it's Devil Survivor x Fire Emblem

thag explains the pandering.

The lighting spell shown is Elthunder, so it seems attacks are FE based. Could be both!

Persona 5 Wii U looks great though, wouldn't you agree? Two SMT world games on a single platform is pretty great.

You said they deleted it from existence a second ago! Even now the timeline is still changing! They're inside the time--

Oh yeah Persona 5 Wii U is going to be interesting.

It was also used for Persona 1 so the idea seems to be that is their "Hey, we're going off the beaten track so don't expect the three way dustup between God, Lucifer and Yourself." indicator.

but if one is better than the other, people who play the lesser version will be social outcasts.
AniHawk gets it. RPGs are like Highlanders and there can be only one, but they are also like Dragonball Z characters, in that the more you shout about them, the more power they get. As their value inflate and deflate, so does your own. They are your personal demons. It is the deepest Persona ARG. All this 'enjoying more than one game from accomplished developers' stuff sounds exhausting.

This makes the most sense to me as a business decision and to facilitate creative freedom from both.

Yeah real talk. I have exactly zero idea what this game is about or how it even plays--I thought this was going to be SMT demons on a Fire Emblem tactics map...--but fuck if I'm not all the way in.

My only reservation is that Persona Q was kind of trash, hope this thing has more emphasis on being an actual worthwhile game instead of just being a novelty.

Oh yeah Persona 5 Wii U is going to be interesting.

With that and the Last Guardian coming out next week, the WiiU is set to dominate for the foreseeable decade. I heard that the new CoD: Galaxies was a stellar new action adventure FPS platformer puzzler match-three shoot'em up, too.

I am going to laugh/cry when P5 is the Tantalus port.

Takada seems to have trashy taste when it comes to art, but his understanding of strategy design and gameplay mechanics is top notch. His strong affinity with SRPGs could be a reason why he was chosen to lead this project, given that FE is a SRPG series as well.

I like the Archer's crazy aim there. She's twisting her body all sorts of weirdness tryin' to get that shot off for no good reason other than to showboat :P

Now that Atlus can get RPGs back on console I hope they have as big a variety as they did on PS2. Raidou, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, and Persona looked much more similar than P5 and Illusory Revelations do but they played pretty differently.

So then it's gotten to the point in which we question ATLUS that what qualities determine what is and what is not that makes up of a SMT game? Especially considering the various sub-series and spin-offs.

Some of the replies in this topic sound awfully familiar to the "This isn't FF" rhetoric that happens when whatever (insert arbitrary metric) that occurs for almost every new FF game release.

I really don't think ATLUS along with Intelligent Systems is not going provide a decent game. I mean they DO have a fairly proven track record when it comes to THIS particular genre, no less.

How is that the same as what I'm talking about. Its not. For instance the girl on the far left.

I'm not inherently calling it wrong btw. I'm just noting the change that I find off putting.

wait what?

Ummm once again.

Ohh yeah, before u had wrong thoughts about me here lol, I would said what they show is fanservice for sure but what I am saying it is not like this thing is strange to FE world here or some SMT spin off.

I feel the further girl looks a lot like Haru here.

It looks a lot like Persona to me. Colours, typography, screen UI, perspective all remind me more of Persona than FE or SMT. I have no issue with that.
I don't see how the colour palette is similar to Persona. The modern Persona games often use limited, bold colour choices revolving around a single primary colour. The daytime environments are usually very grounded in their presentation and palette while the dungeons are themed around certain colours schemes that allow the simple UI to pop against them. But IR#FE is instead going for a chaotic mix of intense, clashing colours. We see blues, reds, greens, purples and more featured in the same scene. It's really a polar opposite of Persona's use of contrast.

Those are qualities of SMT, but you'd be daft to say this J-Pop fanservice "idol" stuff is in anyway SMT.

?

I expected something like this tbh, the idea that some people had of "OMG! FE chars meet SMT chars across dimensions" was kind of silly tbh because the 2 series have very different aesthetics and "feel" to begin with so that would have looked very silly.
In some ways this is the best outcome: A new IP that take elements from both series and tries to be unique in it's own way.

I love how they are mixing them so far:

1) We are summoning demons, but WAIT! They are FE characters with a twist.
2) Tokyo is present and fine, but WAIT! There is a ruined version of Tokyo too!
3) Modern setting, but WAIT! The world is connected to a fantasy land that fit the FE series more...

The only thing that really suprised me is the "idol" and "stage" theme but I love it since the battles looks spectacular with the scenario, the crowds and all...

I like the Archer's crazy aim there. She's twisting her body all sorts of weirdness tryin' to get that shot off for no good reason other than to showboat :P

That so Fire Emblem!

All I know is that we have a brand new, console JRPG from Atlus who is the current king of the genre. I couldn't more be more happy about this game :D

I've been planning to get a Wii-U for awhile anyway but now this is my number one reason to do so!
