Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

That line was drawn a long time ago. Just like old RE fans and RE4 and onward fans. Obviously you can like both, but to pretend a huge shift didn't happen is absurd.

The Fire Emblem line is between 5 and 6 when the original creator left the game series/Int Systems and Nintendo sued him, and the amount of hate six gotten at the time was pretty brutal as it was pretty dumbed down compared to five, people don't like the gba sprites, and pretty much attempt to do FE1 over again.

edit. As for this game, I don't think I expected anything except that it would be led by Atlus.

In my opinion this game will actually be a huge social commentary on Japan's j-pop culture and a subversion of the typical brainless Vita idol game. Also, expect to be able to kill your friends in HD, especially if there's a Law vs Chaos alignment system.

I actually hope there's social links, because a Nintendo IP that brings in the Persona crowd would be a godsend. Especially considering must people expected this to be a Wii U cross-over SRPG like Project X Zone.

Only thing that can bring the Persona crowd to Wii U is Persona itself. System is too far gone for any fanbase exchanges like that writ large :P

That would be brilliant, but I feel it's a bit much to hope for. That trailer was TOO on the nose.

Not what I was expecting. I kind of expected something very dark and serious given that it was xSMT not xPersona. Still, I'm glad it's not a SRPG and it is actually taking more of a Persona approach. I don't really care about Fire Emblem, so I'm more intersted in it being an ATlUS rpg.

So looking closer at that one screenshot with the main(?) girl performing that attack in the stadium while she is in her normal school uniform, the whole crowd with the glow sticks are like scary looking clowns and other weird monster looking things.

That'd be great, but that sounds like something I'd be confident P Studio could pull off, but I don't know about the Devil Survivor team. More and more, I keep thinking that there's a weird tonal dissonance behind this preview trailer, so this is one of the things I'd like to see.

The game is rated M for all we know it could get very dark later.
Im convinced there is something hidden at least.

It would be cool if the game actually did this.. but idk... it could either be that, or just an attempt to bring in the waifu idol crowd.

I don't think that the Persona x FE comparisons are there.

I mean many of the SMT spinoff series like Persona, Devil Survivor, DDS, Devil Summoner, etc. borrow elements from mainline SMT.

This is basically a spinoff but with FE as a base rather than something original.

I mean Yamagami said this in late 2013 and that's what we got in the video.

Yamagami said:
For a long time, I’ve wanted to create a Fire Emblem in our times, in the real world. Imagine a Pegasus that comes from the sky and lands on Building 109 of Shibuya, Tokyo. I always thought that would be incredible.

At the same time, I know it’s hard because of how Fire Emblem is. I visited many companies to express these ideas. When I went to Atlus, I was told that Shin Megami Tensei together with Fire Emblem is what I wanted.

So, I soon said that to Intelligent Systems and started this very special collaboration.
Oops! I shouldn’t say that the game takes place in the real world. We haven’t announced it, right?

Yes the barebones teaser showed us something different, but it directly conflicts with what has been said in past interviews.

The art style between SMT 3, Strange Journey, and SMT 4 are different as well. Not as different as this, but still.

Being developed by the mainline SMT team gives me confidence that this game will be good and it will have a twist to it, like all SMT spinoffs do.

Man the reception to this game's reveal is super divided.

Seems Persona fans love it and FE fans don't.
My perception of the thread has been overall more like this:
I loved Persona 4, loved SMT IV, and consider Fire Emblem one of my absolute favorite series'. As weird as this looks I feel like it would be hard for them to do me wrong.
The people I recognize as being more outspoken or maybe just more present in SMT threads seem to be generally positive. I think a lot of people that are familiar with both Atlus and Nintendo's pedigrees expect this to be good and can recognize elements from both series when closely inspected.

There is plenty of drive-by disappointment and a few disgruntled people but I'm seeing an overall positive tone to the discussion.

The "pandering" and "Compile Hearts" comments are surprising mainly because--while there are clearly idols and some risque costumes--this is Atlus and Nintendo. Neither are innocent of including fanservice, but neither are guilty of ever having created a "pandering Otaku game" either and Atlus at least has a built in audience for that type of thing on a certain other platform if that is the direction the company really wanted to go.

The reason is because at first glance it looks exactly like an HD-ish Compile Heart game. I mean, Omega Quintet even has the whole 'ruined world' thing with the beep and stuff.

I think the theory that they are forced to fight in an arena is a pretty solid one, which in and of itself could be used as a commentary on idol culture.

I really hope we do get more info at E3, they probably unveiled it now so they can show alot more at E3 which will be a relatively quick time to put an end to the confusion, I'm imagining that this is like hyrule warriors, lots of yay and nay, but ultimately alot of hell yes when more is revealed at E3

I'm not sure the game will make a reappearance at E3.

When would you expect to see it again than?

No idea, but the localization process for the game is clearly not far in the process, E3 is 2 months away and it's a show focused for the West. The only thing I would expect is to see this same trailer replaying in Atlus' booth (and/or Nintendo's).

Idol culture commentary? o3o interested to see how they go about that

I have to wonder what dungeon this was. Like I think what was shown with the guy running outside that Japanese castle looking place at night looks to be the same area as the battle stage area since some of the background architecture match.

I HOPE it has tons of fan service pandering! I'll love it even more!
Avatar quote?

Woah where'd this thread come from? I thought this game was getting skimmed over but turns out it's the most talked about thing from the direct.

Persona 4, mayne. Rise.

Though I'd like them to try something different, maybe go more in the direction of theatre. One of the FMV clips from the trailer reminds me of a live action sentai show, probably the costumes.

Maybe. I wouldn't rule anything out just because they already broke the mold by showing it in the U.S. Direct stream.

And if Nintendo is publishing this and it really is much more FE than SMT, my guess is Nintendo will be the ones to translate it.

Didn't 8-4 translate FE:A, instead of Nintendo Treehouse? There's precedent for 3rd parties localizing these types of games instead of Nintendo itself.

Right, more specifically I mean that since Nintendo is publishing this, I think they'll assign a team to translate it, whether that's Treehouse, 8-4, or another partner of their choosing. If it's going to mostly consist of FE material mixed with original content, it's probably best they make that call. Aside from that, I get the feeling Atlus USA is busy enough as is and will continue to be for a while.

Ah yeah, that would make more sense.

IGN put up a 23 minute rewind theater look on the trailer. One of the better ones they've done I feel.

The only other one I've seen of theirs is the Persona 5 Rewind, and it was surprisingly good, so I'll tune in.

TGS 2015?

To me, E3 sounds too early and TGS sounds too late.

Might I remind everyone that this is an initial reveal trailer.

While it does reveal elements of the game, I have a feeling that Intelligent Systems and Atlus are more aware of the expectations people have had for this game and, as such, crafted a trailer to defy those aforementioned expectations as well as allow for a surprise during the campaign.

Despite my qualms with some of the more concupiscent aspects of this game, I am confident in its potential even after viewing the trailer.
