Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

Yeah, there's been a number of people saying they are disappointed it's not a SRPG. Almost immediately after it was announced, it was just said to be an RPG. Nothing else was said for genre.

Lol yea exactly! Sometimes I'm surprise from the number of ppl on GAF who play games for a living arent kept up to date on games they are following on

update!

I'll admit I felt a bit let down by the trailer. That gamexplain video made me feel a lot better though. I'm not the biggest SMT fan, but I hope the things I don't like are patched up by whatever FE themed mechanics they come up with. Optimistic.

I think the combat system in Persona/SMT 4 is pretty good, if not a bit basic. SMT 4's biggest problem for me was that it felt like it had a small budget reusing a lot of assets and I didn't like how it handled the overworld and the story telling. The small segments of the trailer seem to remedy this issue, so i hope the game ends up great.

Disgaea 5 just came out. Also, believe in Fire Emblem. Wii U is the perfect home console for SRPGs too so hopefully it gets at least a few.

I think the most we'll get for Wii U are the GC and Wii Fire Emblem games for "Virtual Console"...

Unless they decide to revive the Wars franchise for Wii U.

I thought Disgaea 5 performed badly? I only saw that in passing reading the last weekly sales thread though so I'm not sure how accurate that is lol.

Yeah I don't see us getting any SRPG FE's on home consoles either. I could see the VC stuff as well hitting though. Especially the wii if they start pushing more releases for the Wii VC. If anything I expect more spin-offs of FE such as what we are seeing here.

I don't know if the Disgaea games sell all that well, didn't the dev say they were having trouble recently? Sadly quality SRPG's have been dying out except for the few that we've been getting on handheld still like Fire Emblem (we don't even get Advance Wars anymore :(..) Atleast DeSu2 Break Record is coming soon.

And how did Disgaea do?
Fucking terrible, I'm sure you know. And yes, he said "pretty much" dead. Maybe it will sell normal levels in the west, but I honestly expect we'll see a lot of good games bomb on the Japanese PS4. Only people in Japan I actually know with PS4s are a Koei employee and gaijin.

Hopefully you're wrong but we will see. I doubt we would see the gamepad being taken advantage of as a godmode controller for turn-based SRPGs with some ports. Advance Wars would be cool but I'm worse at those games than Fire Emblem.

I don't see SRPGs really hitting the home console space unless things change. They seem to do just fine on portables, but for whatever reason people don't want them at home.

Its due to the amount of time you need to sit there and play them thats why. More the Disgaea series in general. At least now there is a suspend and resume feature on the PS4 so that helps things, but we have not really had a strong console grid based SRPG since the PS2 days.

I just watched the gamexplain, it's definitely worth your time if you have any interest in this. I'm very hyped about this game's potential now, I hope we find out more at e3

Do we have any confirmation that short-haired girl from the beginning is the idol? Where did the hair go?

The only clue I can see that hints at them being the same person is when you compare the clearer version of the portrait (which looks like the shorter-haired girl from the artwork) on the side at 0:49 to the bottom portrait at 1:17 when she is attacking in idol form. They seem pretty similar.

Didn't stop those other games from bombing, it seems.

Seems like there's a rough translation out for the song now. Got it from this video's description, and the video itself is another trailer analysis that picks up on a few things GameXplain and IGN didn't (though I think some posters here picked up on them too).

Lyrics:

I want to destroy
Will you be able to heal me from loneliness, from pain
And all things I had cherished
(Reincarnation, Realization, Reincarnation)
I want to disappear

Sounds of a city that never sleeps, the melancholy of these fake smiles
Real intentions, sometime, somewhere, though we can't see them
Even if nobody speaks about their worries, we know about them

I want to destroy
These courageous acts I had cherished
But then, I won't be able to be honest
Even if I'm lost or in trouble, if you ever ask me
At least, I'll destroy this pain and loneliness
(Reincarnation, Realization, Reincarnation)
I want to reincarnate

Its best we not speak ill of the dead and buried.

Disgaea is a very niche series, even more so compounded on the fact that console gaming is in a decline in Japan and the PS4 in Japan is not selling nearly as significant as compared to the West.

Adding on top of this that Disgaea 5 is a PS4 exclusive, so It's not actually surprising the game wouldn't have a large amount of sales. Also consider the timing of the release, It was released on the same day as Bloodborne and Kaizoku Musou 3 (One Piece), so it definitely wasn't going to pull PS3 or Vita level sales numbers.

The game is likely chance sell far more units when localized due to more PS4s available in the West and the possibility of not having to compete directly with any other major release, despite it being a niche series. It's an bit far fetched to claim that Disgaea is a dead series.

Hell if NIS canceled the localization or Sohei Niikawa was forced to step down, then maybe you have a point with the "dead and buried" comment, but the game is still scheduled for October release in the West, so lets wait and see before we prematurely proclaim the death of the series.

It was specified as a RPG pretty much the day after it was announced. But in fairness A X Y games have tended to be SRPGs (even when none of the involved franchises are) , so with one of the franchises being an SRPG its not a completely insane assumption to make, if you missed that.

Lucina might have been spotted.

The colour scheme is a little off (maybe the red hair is intended to reference her cape?), but the belt and cuffs are similar to her distinctive design; whereas the helmet makes sense as a fusion of her mask and the Awakening Dark Knight helmet.

I don't see the resemblance besides them being wear the same strippy outfit.
Tharja and the green haired girl I mean.

I don't see that much of a similarity either - even after accounting for the differences in weapon, face and hair; the outfit doesn't seem to even resemble Tharja's in the way the other non-enemy character equivalents do.

Long red-hair + red sword are more reminiscent of Navarre/Nabarl, who I think is pretty popular.

Maybe, but I'm not sure a myrmidon would be so heavily armoured - even enemy units in that class rarely have helmets. And as for the colour scheme, he's gone through a few; with a couple bearing as much relation to this character's as Lucina's.

Even his DS art, which is closest, is primarily red with black hair, as opposed to the unit's dark armour accented with red.

Looks more like a generic Dark Knight to me

I would have thought that as well, but the circular belt buckle and enlarged cuffs are suspicious when combined with the lack of a mount. It's also an odd choice of hairstyle for a generic unit...

I'm still not convinced it's her, but I think this is more likely to be based on a specific character rather than a generic, especially considering the more abstract nature of some of the enemies we've seen so far.

Original design had the breastplate

All of the summoned characters (those who have helmets covering their face) have robotic features, so the added armor really isn't all that surprising.

With Fire Emblem if coming next year (to Yurop) with three (!!!) scenarios and possibly Devil Survivor 2 (hahaha), I'm pretty sure I will get my SRPG fill so this being a turn-based RPG using something like Grandia's battle system is very appreciated.

Th way I see it, each main character are a reincarnation/look-alike of a FE hero, but they can "equip" other class than their original class for the sake of diversity, or else everyone would be a swordman

Just got through watching gamexplain's video. I'm now even more hyped for this. I love that there may be stuff like the crowd getting more active the better a show you put on. I can't wait to see more of this game.

I haven't watched it... but I'm just going to wait till E3 or whenever they show off more to evolve my opinion on the game. I was hyped because SMTxFE, I guess I was kind of hoping for more of a Fire Emblem setting and world, but I'm still intrigued because it's a 3D RPG. Idk if I'll be down with some of the stuff (M rating doesn't help my confidence) but I'm still very much looking forward to whatever they show off next and in the future.

Just watched the game explain video, and from just watching the trailer I completely missed that there were portals that the pegusus girl came out of. The two dimensions theory holds weight since the director said that they didn't show off the fire emblem part of the game in the trailer (I forget the exact words, but I remember it being something like that). And, yeah, I think the singer is the 4th girl in the art work based on the panties.

Does anyone have a translation of what the song's lyrics are, or even just what the pegusus girl says at the end? Something I'll never let you do?
