I want this game to be good. So bad

Perfect

This kinda stuff is pretty much exactly what we are talking about when we say Fire Emblem is just about otaku pandering bullshit these days. Seriously dissapointing.

And yet the series has never been more popular. More sales = more games in the series. More FE games that get translated into english. Possibly spin off games.

I'd say that girls with big breasts are just something the Devil Survivor team likes a lot...

I don't think they were saying pandering and popular were mutually exclusive, or anything.

I do like the glasses, actually, but I was referring to the stupid bust comment.

Well, they kind of need to decide on it if they are the character designer. You wouldn't want characters to be given a changing chest between scenes. That's like forgetting to define a character's height. He probably said that to indicate the casual nature of the conversations

Except this game seems to be developed by the Devil Survivor team(not confirmed, just going by the known names, aside from character designer - either way, it's mostly Atlus), not FE's. They've always had this type of character design, even while pushing for a serious story (although we don't know yet if they're doing that here). If anything, these designs are more conservative than DeSu's.

In anime character design, they are. Check out the "older sister" or "teacher" characters in anime, and half the time they have big boobs and glasses since they're supposed to represent mature characters.

I wouldn't even restrict it to "anime design" - it plays into real life "tropes" and western sensibilities as well. I feel mild "teacher" fantasies were common when most of us were teenagers and is still a "fetish" some adults have (same with cheerleaders and nurses and other nonsense). A large bust and "maturity" is also a common association - see Jessica Rabbit (or anything done by Tex Avery) for a fantasy example or Christina Hendricks for a real life example.

Like I don't see anything inherently wrong about the line of thought for character design. It just matters what the final product is - its not worth bemoaning unless the the final product is particularly gross, creepy or inappropriate for the target audience.

I dunno, for the character designer to mention bust and glasses only when creating the character designs and almost nothing else makes me think they gave more attention to those aspects rather than the others. There's so much more he could have talked about.

Haha glad to see it already got some use xD

lol :P that use to be me :(
I'll still recognize you Hibiki :3
hopefully lol

Yeah, because "pander to otakus" is the tried and true method to increase sales. That's why Disgaea is so much more successful than Fire Emblem.
"Pander to otakus" and "pandering to lowest common denominator" are my most disliked phrases ever used to argue against an art style or character design used.

Personally, I don't mind the 'exaggerated' character designs too much. I'm more focused on structure and gameplay anyway. It becomes a nuisance when I want to discuss the game and others want to discuss 'best girl'.

(It was kinda nice playing a pre-release copy of Devil Survivor 2:RB on my own without having to sift through such annoyances)

Right. With you there.

That said this blog snippet is about character design, so, eh, it was probably an inevitable topic.

Yeah. It's certainly an important element when it comes to character design, surely, but is that what needed to be pointed out there?

The interview as a whole is pretty lacking and can basically be summed up as "I'm excited to be working on this as a fan." That comment about color saturation is interesting. At least the destroyed landscape in the trailer suggests that there will at least be some low color saturation environments, so maybe that will create a certain juxtaposition with the character designs.

...come from, by the way? It isn't in that blog post.

I mean I dunno how important those aspects were but as they say "the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence". Just because he didn't mention other aspects doesn't mean they weren't important - the blog post wasn't supposed to be an all encompassing post about the design of the lead heroine, just a brief discussion.

Its good that you mods take care of messes like that since otherwise its impossible to have actual discussions about the game itself which is the whole point of threads made for the particular topic.

The female character randomly getting naked was pretty eye roll inducing to me, Fire Emblem has a series always pandered (loli dragon kids, 15 year old sailor school girls riding pegasi, 15 year old swordswomen, , cat girls etc, etc), but that really got a groan from me.

From context I take it as a joke he made... and he talked about more things about his previous work and the setting for this game.

Oh yes, likewise.

I don't like the design of the glasses, but they could have pulled it off. Nothing wrong with glasses.

The pose without her glasses remind me of Iwata's Directly.

Oh I mean I use to recognize you by avatar and not name lol

Flux!

Yeah, there just wasn't enough info there and I don't know if it's because he wanted to save more info for future posts (likely) or if he is just half-assing the blog posts and mentioned all he felt he needed to mention. Regardless, this being the first info mentioned for character designs is a little disappointing. Hope there's better insight soon.

Well, that's part of what bothers me. Considering this is the first insight into the character designs it's all we have to go on now and it's disappointing info. Why make bust and glasses the first blog post? I wish it was something a little more interesting.

Oh yes, likewise.

Believe it or not, as lame as it was, it wasn't really a major problem with me. That appears to be a failed transformation, judging by the other character's reactions. Alone, it could play as a silly joke.

For me, it was more the overall focus on this kind of stuff that put me off. One thing isn't going to bother me, but when I keep seeing it repeated, in the initial trailer nonetheless, it's going to put a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, the series has always had pandering, but it's kind of been off to the side. Even then, this is hardly the reason for my disappointment so far. Just seems weird to me to take two franchises and then fail to appeal to either in your first trailer. I get it, they want the wider audience, which I'm fine with.... but it's an odd strategy. I have no doubt they'll reveal more of the FE elements as we move forward, but starting this way was a good way to make someone like me uninterested.

It's like, had this not been called SMTxFE, would I have cared about this trailer at all? Most likely not.

Some of you are doing the most with that comment and whats her name yet THEY are still paying dust to red haired Yosuke...

smh...

Also, is this is being made by the Devil Survivor team I can rest assured that the gameplay is going to be amazing, I love DS a LOT
Excited for Break Record =P

toi8 explicitly mentions breast size. People would be discussing about that facet of the recent developer interview if the character designer had mentioned male chest musculature.

I include it. Point is, so far, this game isn't really focusing on attracting FE/SMT fans.

Edited my post because lacked an important word =P

? I am a very BIG fan of both franchises that trailed I saw appealed to me in a lot of ways tbh.

... the only thing I dread about this game is that the conversation in the forums are going to devolve in the typical trash that littered the FE: Awakening threads.
