GTA V PC Performance Thread

I am honestly surprised with how well my aging 760 can run this. Playing GTA Online with no input lag and an almost constant 60 FPS is a godsend. However, I'm looking to possibly upgrade next month. Should I go for the 970 or 980? 980 is definitely as much as I'm willing to spend on a GPU at this point in time.

Whats your CPU if I must ask? Just curious to see how I'd run this.

What kinda settings are you using to get 60fps with a 760?

Dropped the shadow settings a bunch (a shame but whatever) and dialed back the population density just a tad and can blitz around Los Santos at 60fps now. Also cranked my 2500k up to 4ghz but I was still getting drops to 50 or so driving around when I did that.

MSI 970
2500k
8GB RAM

Not a PERFECT 60 when driving but its half a second of 58/59fps. On one hand I'm kind of disappointed because I see others saying they're getting 60 with nearly everything cranked up on pretty much the same build... on the other, still looks great and runs brilliantly so I'm happy!
Dropping under 60 seems to be a world streaming thing than a performance issue, at least for me. Anytime it goes under 60 it's there for a split second and right up to 60-90+.

Can someone help me out here. I moved my GTA 5 folder to an SSD but everytime I run the game launcher, it tries to download it again to the old location on another harddrive. How do I tell this crap Rockstar Social Club thing where I want my games to be located and install?

EDIT: Never mind, just had to uninstall and install again making sure to select my new GTA location.

Finally got started and, wow, this port has exceeded all my expectations. It looks fantastic as doesn't seem to be that taxing on my system at all. I almost can't believe how smooth it is for how good it looks. This is a superb effort from Rockstar.

If you have a bunch of devices in Devices and Printers the Launcher will try to load them all and since there will be a ton of conflicts the game will not load and just crash. Over and over and over. If Rockstar bothered to test it they could have alleviated the issue by having it specifically only use one Keyboard/Mouse and one controller (which should be defaulted to looking for a PS4/360/XOne controller) and disregard the rest it wouldn't be an issue and the game would load and play like it should normally. Instead, since they didn't code the game to do that, it will load all of them and boom, crash.

Interesting. Could you explain what you did to solve the issue? Thus far only thing that has worked for me is disabling my Nvidia card while the launcher loads and then quickly enable it again before the game loads. It works but it's a pretty annoying workaround.

is the general consensus you want vsync on or off? i thought having it on adds sluggishness for FPS games etc
I think if you're over 60fps you'll maintain that with vsync. Below that maybe it drops to 30fps. Not sure. Usually I play in borderless windowed which does'nt require vsync. But DSR does'nt work in borderless windowed annoyingly.
It also depends on how bad the tearing is and if it really bothers you. I can't stand it myself so I always have to fix it.

Is anyone else having ludicrous load times joining GTA Online? Singleplayer seems to load just fine but booting into Online takes five or more minutes.

Got some weird tearing (even with VSync on) until I re-OC'd my 2500K to 4.4. Now it's glass smooth with most settings on high but no MSAA or long shadows (hardware: GTX670, 16GB RAM, 2500K @4.4). Even on three+ year old PC hardware, the console versions look like total shit by comparison, and the improvement in loading times alone illustrates the problems with current console hardware.

Do you have the game installed to a Hard Drive? Looks like some of the streaming issues that the 360/Digital versions had due to limits of streaming info on a HDD.

Yeah I do. I don't have an SSD to install it to but I've never had a problem with a game and my HDD before so I wasn't sure if that was it. I still manage to get a good 55 fps (I have that dumb 59 hz problem so I can't get 60) but the whole pop in thing is really annoying.

Well color me impressed.

I5 2500k @3.8ghz
7950
8gb 1333 ddr3

Intro bank scene gave me min60-max80. Once I switched to the driving section, saw dips to 45 with a high of 75. This is on mixed settings oh high-very high no msaa shadows on normal and I didn't touch any sliders though they are empty. This is also without the amd beta drivers. Can anyone comment on if the beta drivers made a noticeable difference?

I can't believe I have to download this game for a third time a third fucking time

from the little I played the game ran like a dream but this "failed zlib call" error is killing me

For anyone else at high resolutions getting 60fps but stutter, I think it's due to the 59hz. If I create a custom res one pixel bigger on width and length then I can play at 60hz and it looks much less stuttery, I think.

Probably, if you're gonna be gaming at 1080p for a while. If you see 4K in your future, I'd either wait, get a 980, or check out what AMD is offering.
Oh yeah. I won't be going into 4k for a while.

I have a 970m and it runs this game super smooth at very high/high...just saying :)
Is it wrong to spend $340 on a graphics card for one game? I wanted to wait for the 970s to drop, but I don't know if I can wait. Your post is tempting me greatly haha

Just played some more, that 60FPS just feels so right. I do seem to have random drops in odd places and even cut-scenes sometimes... not too often though. I'm sure as game updates and graphics drivers are released in the future we will see more improvements.

Also.... has anyone figured out how to block the intro logo's and go straight into the main menu yet?

*edit*

Last post for tonight, need to get my ass to bed. I'll check the news/posts tomorrow and see if there is anything new I can add to the OP. Feel free to drop me any suggestions you may have, the tips & tweaks section could use some love. Good night :)

oh wow. turning post FX to high instead of very high gives me enough performance to deal with High textures AND MSAAx2 + TXAA at 60fps

downside: you don't get in-game DoF :/ :/ :/

decisionsss

I had extra devices left over (from extra controllers like my Wii U pro Controller, for instance) that I manually disabled in Devices and Printers. After I disabled ones I didn't need to play GTAV it loaded up just fine. My devices and printers look like this now: http://i.gyazo.com/6f5e5fde13cc719cbfd763e4e49e5b1b.png

Seems like you have some corrupted .rpf files, dude. I had the issue myself, and also another Gaffer here, Enduin. You don't have to re-download everything, you just need to check which one is corrupted and delete it. This will force the downloader to download just the missing ones.

You can use WinMD5 to check the if the checksum values matches with your files, below:

Question, are we allowed to post Reddit links on GAF? There is a very awesome program you can download and use that will auto check the hashes of every file required in the GTAV folder. Beats the hell out of using WinMD5. If it's allowed let me know and I'll link it.

You can always use it for other games too ;)

Of course

I've got about 14 hours in this game now, and I'm happy with my balance of performance and visuals. I'm on a G-Sync monitor so I don't need to stick to the 60fps. My average framerate is somewhere in between 50 - 70fps, I only really see it below 50 in those intense wooded areas.

i7 4770K @ 4.5Ghz
2x GTX 780 SLI (OC, but still currently experimenting to see how far I can push it).
16GB RAM
Game installed on an Intel 730 240GB SSD.
G-Sync (1080p, 144Hz).

Settings:
Not pictured, Water Quality: Very High.

I just messed primarily with those sliders that likely were more costly on the CPU until I increased GPU utilisation to a good enough degree (as an indication I wasn't being bottlenecked as much), stopped decreasing when I was either happy with GPU utilisation or reducing the settings stopped increasing the GPU utilisation. I think it's possibly a reasonable way to get the most out of your GPUs, to reduce the bottleneck incurred by the CPU heavy settings (those distance sliders, for example). I can actually probably squeeze more out of things like population density, but I don't really want to spend anymore time on that at the moment, my available time to play is coming to an end quickly, so I want to play it :p

I haven't had any real issues in regards to stability or consistently, I get nice smooth frames, don't get the hitching that some people have complained about. The only odd thing is that on about 4 or 5 occasions so far (in the 14 hours of gameplay), usually when exiting a cutscene or building, framerate momentarily nosedives, I assume when it is just struggling to load something in. But it's not a significant issue at all, it hasn't happened in any actual gameplay and it lasts for 5 or 6 seconds at most.

Just turned up the population density and variety back up to 100% (from 70%) - no real noticeable performance dips, so I'm happy with that.

Does Reshade + SweetFX 2.0 work properly with this game? Read some people having trouble earlier.

It kinda breaks the intro, so the game boots very slowly (and caused some terrible coil whine on my card...). I gave up at that point because I got too annoyed. It should work though.

Best AA for me in this game is 2xMSAA + MFAA. Great compromise between IQ and performance, looks ace!

Tried installing reshade and now my Launcher keeps crashing. Took the files out and it still crashes.

Any idea on a fix?

EDIT: Nevermind. Got it working somehow but now it's redownloading the 300mb patch for whatever reason.

Getting great performance 60-120fps on my GTX 970 and i7 2600k @ 4.2GHz.

Everything under graphics is maxed with these exceptions:
- MSAA 2x w/ TXAA enabled, FXAA Off obviously
- Shadow filtering set to "Softer" (I found that Soft and Softest have more artifacts at different times of day like shadow acne and bad bias values). Nvidia PCSS looks nice and has a medium perf hit and was also causing weird artifacts in certain situations. It seems like they may have perfected the internal settings for softer more than the others, but I dunno.
- Grass on Very High (Ultra is *murder* in densely vegetated areas)

Under advanced settings I only use the streaming while flying options (though I haven't tested that yet) and the extra distance scaling at about half. The increased shadow map resolution has a HUGE perf hit, again mostly in heavily vegetated areas. I can only imagine there is a huge amount of overdraw caused by all the vegetation. Looks nice though, definitely a noticeable visual difference. I have no idea what long shadows are but maybe someone in here has already figured that one out.

Anyway the game still looks pretty damn awesome and runs butter smooth.

What does the Post FX do except dof? I set it to normal because I don't see a difference even comparing screenshots with normal and maxed.

I wonder if there's something I can easily disable to get MSAA to at least 2x and keep 60fps.

What are the most intensive effects with the lowest visible improvements?

People have been talking about this, but I can't find a fix for the 59hz bug. Does turning off Vsync and enabling it in Nvidia control panel fix it? It's causing stutters when loading environments and is really bugging me

Running with a 970 and i5 4790k BTW and can't get a stable framerate at high settings. Thinking this 59hz issue is the cultprit given numbers others are getting.

If you have NV card(s), turn off PCSS (dial down to soft/softer), and dial down Grass Textures to High/Very High.
