GTA V PC Performance Thread

Try forcing Half-Vsync first in the driver (if the game doesn't support it, I don't recall if it does). That is assuming you can almost consistently hit that refresh rate.

Ok. I set adaptive vsync in Nvidia control panel last night but didn't try the game out for long afterwards (I've felt like crap all week). I've been watching the Afterburner OSD and the framerate is usually all over but seems to hover more in the 80s and lower.

I played LA Noire at 30 for the 60fps unlock issues on release and I replayed some of it recently so I figured i'd give this a max settings / 30 fps try for a while...

NOPE

I think the motion blur looks really nice, so I'm playing at 4K/30 with it all the way up. Not looking forward to hitting the countryside, though, based on the accounts here.

a decent motion blur can be really nice for a 30fps game but tends to give me a headache at 60.

Don't know if this will apply to anyone else but just clicking restore default settings in the graphics menu solved my 59fps issue. But then again I went from 60 to 59 randomly rather than getting 59 from the get go

Extended Shadows Distance does some... weird stuff with shadows in the vicinity of the player.
Maxed w/ high res shadows: (look at the palm tree shadow)
i7lWNO9RgoOpz.jpg
Off w/ high res shadows:
Let's see how it looks without high res shadows.
Maxed w/o high res shadows:
Off w/o high res shadows:

So yeah, if I turn it off I get detail back in shadows... but then there's shadow pop-in while going fast. Argh!
It's like it's degrading quality in order to cover a wider area.

oh no... buildings have started to pop in out of nothing and the road textures stop loading when driving fast now and again.

god damn

Getting a mostly steady 60 in the city and outskirts, when I go off-road in the woodlands it drops to +/-50fps. When I switch to 2560*1080 fps drops with 15fps on average.

Also I can't figure out why I can't select 60Hz when playing on my TV, the display is set to 60Hz in Windows yet GTAV shows 59Hz as the max. When I'm playing on my monitor I can select 60Hz with no problem. It's nothing major but is there a fix for that?

Alright guys, leaving the thread in your hands for the rest of the day. I will check in tomorrow morning and see if anything else can be added.

Unless something major happens tonight like an in-game patch or new drivers, I won't be posting anything new.

As always please feel free to shoot me any suggestions for additions to the op, I always check my PM's and get e-mail notifications.

Cheers!

This game is weird.
I'm having an hard time keeping 60fps stable, but if i lock at 30 i can throw whatever shit at it and it stays rock solid.

I'm gonna keep it at 30 with the eye candy, until Andy releases the in depth guide, and see if it's worth it to bring stuff down to have 60, but so far even lowering many things, still gets me a lot of severe dips in the 40s, when driving around the city, which makes it very stuttery and unpleasant.

My cpu (i5 2500k 3.3ghz) is definitely my lowest component, so i guess that's the bottleneck... or the 8gb RAM? Surely not the 970.

Was a patch pushed out? I didn't see one but I managed to boot up the game on my regular Windows account (with weird characters according to Rockstar) this morning when I wasn't able to all day yesterday.

Thanks for all the hard work! This thread is very helpful.

Overclock that mutha'! The 2500k overclocks like a champ on air. Yes that will be a bottleneck if you're just running at 3.3 Ghz.

And I doubt 8GB of RAM would have any affect on your your performance, unless you're running a ton of stuff in the background (or don't have a Windows pagefile). You shouldn't be having problems hitting 1080p/60 on the 970 on even med-high settings, as long as MSAA is off.

I got this weird bug when I was going on a rampage in the subway. All of a sudden stamps with the text "police" started to appear over the ordinary floor textures. It flashed between stamps and ordinary textures without stamps depending on how I directed the camera. I wonder if it was some kind of ai debugging tool to make sure that the police can reach you?

A screenshot:

I was running locked 40fps, borderless windowed mode on my 120hz screen. Settings were 4xmfaa, one step down on grass and reflections, otherwise the highest settings. My specs are 3570k@4.6, 8gb ram, Titan X.

REPOST FROM STEAM THREAD:

So... after trying out all the settings for GTA V and recieving continual micro stutter, i decided to Normal every graphical setting and restarted my PC.

Lo and behold, I get solid 60 fps ingame for 2 hours straight, even in forests. Decided to High Quality everything with Crowd Variety at zero and restart PC... HOLY SHIT, constant 60 fps with 45 dips in busy streets and forests.

Restarting the game doesn't work, restarting the PC does. Goddamn Rockstar and their memory leaking game.

This is on a 4670K with GTX 770 2GB card and both with all my overclocks disabled.

I'm satisfied now.

I didn't notice if this is in other versions of gtav, but at least in single player there's a very obvious change in the headlights when you get in a car. Only your headlights create dynamic shadows.
That switch is bugging me now that I noticed it. Uughh LOL.

Thanks for unseeing it for the rest of us as well :p I noticed it last night but it didn't register till you mentioned it :(

I feel like you're right because I played for a long time yesterday and had to keep lowering my settings. I thought it was just my imagination, or being in new areas with worse performance, but after shutting my PC off for the night and coming back today I was able to go back to 4x MSAA with locked 60 FPS. There are some stability issues it seems. Nothing too horrible, but I had a similar experience to yours.

That's only with Post FX on Ultra. On Very High or lower, your headlights no longer create dynamic shadows.

Actually misspoke a little. On Very High, you still get dynamic shadows, but only for non-entity static objects like buildings and terrain. You only get dynamic shadows from cars, predestrians, foliage and other small props with PostFX to Ultra.

Welp looks like my GTX 580 can still handle some high settings. Due to its only 1.5gb vram, texture quality cant go no higher than normal. Still get around 40-50 fps.

I would, but my current PSU is shit, and i'm already pushing it, with the 970.
I'll have to upgrade it sooner or later.

I'm using a GTX 570 and FX-8350 with High Textures, and although it puts me over the VRAM limit my experience is still pretty smooth.

That could be another cause of performance issues, if your graphics card is starved for juice. I'd upgrade that asap, as an underpowered PSU can potentially lead to voltage spikes which can actually cause damage to your hardware. If you're pushing that close to your PSU's limit, especially if it's an older PSU that might be dirty or less efficient than it used to be, you might actually want to underclock your graphics card just to be safe until you do upgrade.

Is anybody else annoyed by the way the sky flickers ever so slightly when driving around with sunny weather? I did see this in the PS4 version too, but it seems much worse with the increased fps.

every time i alter the shadow setting mine starts to flicker. no idea how I get rid of it, it just seems to fix itself randomly.

Still not got into the countryside yet but this is 1440p. Every setting on Graphics is set to the highest except I'm using fxaa and x4msaa on reflections, get 60-80fps. I've seen 57-58 fps the odd time, mostly its low 60s.

In game DOF was off when taking the pics, I switched it on and had no affect on frame rates

i7 930
GTX 970

At 2880x1620 I get 45ish with the same settings, it starts to look decent then, no shimmer. So will probably lock at 30fps at something like 3200-1800p for image quality reasons

You will hit the 30s-40s when you hit the green.

So I'm getting crashes now. Played yesterday fine for 9 hours straight and now the game crashes on launch. Didn't anything beside update Windows.

What the shit, now I have a reproducable crash when trying to drive to Michaels house after the first "fitness freak" mission. Game always crashes like 300m away no matter which alley I take. dafuq

E: Tried to circumvent it by character swapping, but the game crashes as soon as I zoom in to Franklin. Sigh...

I'm not sure it's related to restarted your computer.

I had the same thing happen(ran like crap, then next time it ran fine) without restarting the computer and it's happened more than once now.

No option to enable motion blur, right ?
There's a slider in the console version but all it seems to do is adjusting the amount of MB you get when you do a roll in first person and maybe during crashes.

Does anyones else's framerate go down to 30fps and then back to 60 after some time has passed? I've gotten 60fps on all the benchmarks, but the fps in-game is all over the place :/
When the FPS goes down to 30, I stand still without touching anything and it eventually goes back to 60. Has to be some kind of bug, yeah?

I have these parts for reference:

AMD FX-6300 (planning on getting FX-8350 soon)
ASUS GTX 960 Strix
8gb RAM

Anyone else getting bad delays when switching a character? It sometimes even goes to a screen where the character model is just standing frozen until the 'real' switch scene kicks in (sometimes even with a black screen).

There's a slider in this version also. Haven't tested it out. Not typically a fan of motion blur except in certain situations.

That's vsync kicking in there.

Your game is dropping below 60fps, so vsync takes you to 30fps. You may be standing still, but the game is still going on around you.

Been tweaking for 2 days now, and got it running pretty good. However, I'm getting some highly annoying microstutter in cutscenes that I just can't seem to get rid of consistently.

5820K@4.4Ghz
Titan X (1425/3875)
16GB DDR4 @ 2666Mhz

Tried Nvcpl Vsync, in game Vsync, Adaptive Vsync, no Vsync, frame limit in NInspector and Afterburner. None of them gets rid of it. Driving me nuts. Happens on lower settings as well.
